Based on all the self-inflicted grief people have because they use "Scan" in Picard rather than cluster and lookup, I'm beginning to think we should pop up a warning box every time someone selects "Scan".

We'd start making Picard even scarier :) I still think we need to look into reworking the matching algorithm. It might not be easy, but it should be possible of better combining fingerprint and metadata lookups into a unified lookup.

Yeah, I was just venting. 😜

Changing the label from "Scan" to something like "Lookup from fingerprint/audio/etc" might be worthwhile

as a new user, "Scan" sounds like something you want to do in any case

<outsidecontext[m> "We'd start making Picard even..." <- I like the concept of a unified lookup - so the buttons would be either normal "Lookup" or "Lookup with fingerprint". I would personally also support the idea of automatic clustering if you have scanned a directory and an automatic lookup of the most likely "release/release group" (without getting the actual metadata - so a lightweight retrieval) so that the

user can either accept or search manually or do a scan and another lookup (if the user thinks that would help).

When a user clicks Scan, Picard could look at the amount of metadata achieved during file load of files without MBIDs i.e. from existing tags and directories and filenames, and make a judgement about whether there is insufficient data for a normal lookup - and if it thinks that there **is**

enough data for a normal lookup, then it could suggest this and give the user the option.
