<133dj.> What's the best way to get streaming service (Spotify, Youtube, etc.) links with a MusicBrainz track ID?
      • <133dj.> preferably programmatically, via API
      • <02UltimateRiff> @3dj. unfortunately those links rarely get added to MusicBrainz recordings, since the only way to do it currently is to manually add them to each track on the release. that said, there might be a way to get them via the Spotify/Deezer/YouTube/etc APIs once you have the release links from MusicBrainz (I've got no experience with APIs, might be better to ask over in #development (bridged to #MetaBrainz on IRC)
      • <133dj.> Yeah, I found examples like this https://musicbrainz.org/ws/2/url/bd2152b0-7fe8-... which return a spotify URL, but it's for the artist and none of the (rather popular) MBIDs I tried returned anything 😔
      • <133dj.> btw is there a listenbrainz/last.fm player for its recomendations on android?
      • <133dj.> the website's kinda wonky even on desktop
      • <02UltimateRiff> there is a ListenBrainz app, which should have a lot of the features from the website
      • <05rustynova> The lb app is definitely not up to par with the website, but there's development right now to make it a lot better
      • <133dj.> Does it have a player, recommendations, both or neither? 🤔
      • <12Aerozol> MB down for everyone else too? Including the bridge? Or is it just me (and on my partners phone too 😵)
      • lw
        Aerozol: looks fine here
      • aerozol[m]
Hmm thanks, looks like it's back for me, how strange
      • lw
does this edit mean the user added the recording while adding the medium? https://musicbrainz.org/recording/beb1d784-eda0... - they've linked to the wrong artist so i want to add an edit note but i'm not sure which edit to put it on
      • discordbrainz
<12Aerozol> @3dj.: LB has recommendations and a player (off the top of my head, you can use Spotify, Apple, SoundCloud or YouTube to play/match music in the player)
      • lw
ah, i was confused because the history showed two 'add medium' but there are two separate digital releases of this release group
      • i hope this is correct, i've never left a note on someone else's edit before https://musicbrainz.org/edit/114525015
      • aerozol[m]: the site actually is pretty slow right now

      • aerozol[m]
        Great comment lw
      • lw
aerozol[m]: should i have just submitted votable edits to fix the bad links? i didn't because a) i thought the submitter might want to do that and b) i'm not 100% sure "Altan (German rap)" is the right artist even though it seems pretty likely
      • also i posted this on the forum: https://community.metabrainz.org/t/single-or-st... -- and i entirely understand the response and i agree the tracks i linked to make more sense as singles than as standalone recordings, but then... what is the point of standalone recordings?
      • like even if the documentation is out of date here, when would you ever prefer a standalone recording to a single, assuming that "single" no longer refers only to a CD/vinyl?
      • UltimateRiff mentioned two criteria: a) album art, and b) a release date, but every release has a release date (even if we don't know what it is) and i'm not convinced album art is a requirement for a single in the digital age
      • like if i'm an EBM artist and i release a single on my website, but i don't bother to create album art for it, does that mean it's not really a single?
      • i feel like maybe 'standalone recordings' is a relic of the old days when real music was released on physical media and internet-only releases didn't count, but we're well past that
      • discordbrainz
<12lazybookwyrm> I normally use standalone recordings for stuff like videos of artist performances at live events (like radio studios or concerts) where the recordings are official and uploaded by the event but I wouldn't necessarily consider them part of the artist's discography
      • <12lazybookwyrm> Idk if that's a valid distinction, but it's how I use them
      • <12lazybookwyrm> Edit: looked at the documentation for standalone recordings and looks like it matches the second example given
      • lw
jeez this might be the worst ebay music seller i've ever dealt with
      • discordbrainz
<133dj.> Interesting, and btw where does it get the streaming links for Spotify & co.? 🤔
      • <05rustynova> It searches the title + artist name and pick the first link
      • lw
aerozol[m]: originaly submitter fixed the problem (that was quick!) but i can't vote for their fixes... bleh
      • i understand wanting to prevent abuse but as a new user i can add all kinds of random junk to the database (if i wanted to) but i can't vote on a helpful edit?
      • this is like the 3rd time this came up, now i just leave edit notes saying "yes, this is correct but i'm not allowed to vote, sorry"
      • not really a complaint but a "hmm"
      • i was looking at other copies of this album on eBay and looked up the EAN on MB and got this: https://musicbrainz.org/search?query=barcode%3A...
      • can a digital media release really have a barcode? what does that even mean?
      • discordbrainz
<12lazybookwyrm> Yeah, most streaming releases have one
      • <12lazybookwyrm> They don't have the black and white bar part, but they have the number
      • lw
what does 'streaming releases' mean in this context? like bandcamp?
      • (i don't think i ever saw a barcode on there, or on Apple Music that i can remember)
      • discordbrainz
        <12lazybookwyrm> Bandcamp, Apple, Spotify, etc
      • <12lazybookwyrm> None of them are really viewable without using an api or looking at page source though
      • lw
ah... i was about to ask if this is a per-artist/label thing because i don't see it here: https://instrictconfidence.bandcamp.com/album/m... - but maybe they store it internally and just don't expose it...
      • discordbrainz
<12lazybookwyrm> An importer like Harmony will get them though
      • lw
but more generally, this seems like nonsense to me. a physical CD release and a digital media release clearly aren't the same product, how can they have the same EAN?
      • discordbrainz
<12lazybookwyrm> That one does have one 4046661251227
      • lw
        does it? where?
      • ctrl+f 404 returns no matches
      • discordbrainz
<12lazybookwyrm> I have the bandcamp userscript installed which makes it visible below the track list https://raw.github.com/murdos/musicbrainz-users...
      • lw
        ah okay
      • this is the EAN for the physical CD release
      • it can't be the same for the bandcamp release, that doesn't make sense :-(
      • discordbrainz
<12lazybookwyrm> The bandcamp one is entered by the artist iirc, so they just put the one for the CD there
      • <12lazybookwyrm> Barcodes are sometimes unique to releases, sometimes not
      • <02UltimateRiff> lw: the barcode is in the page source on Bandcamp, I think it's listed as UPC or barcode, I forget... there's very few stores that show the barcode publicly, but many of them reveal them through their API or some other hidden trick
      • <13agatzk> The last two and a half days my mass merge recordings script takes about 15 seconds per merge to go through, up from maybe 4-5 seconds per recording merge. I've also noticed other slowness with queries and pages loading. Is it just me or has mb been slower the last few days?

agatzk: not just you, we've been having load issues recently due to some weird traffic patterns. I spun up another website container on another node just now and tweaked the number of workers available, hoping it helps
      • discordbrainz
<13agatzk> thank you 🙏 just wanted to check in as I've done some troubleshooting and can't find anything that makes a difference. I actually noticed 15 or so minutes ago it seems faster now.
