If I find a mistyped track title on an album, does it get fixed on all necessary levels if I fix it on just one place (work/recording/release) or do I have to make several edits for it?
      • (found a wacky case... the physical album has one version of the track title in the back cover, another in the lyrics booklet, but pretty much every source on the web - including mb, spotify and tidal - use a third version which is definately wrong, probably a copypaste fail by someone who does not understand the language they were dealing with :)

kirvesAxe: if you edit a release's track list then you can check a box that copies the change to the recording. If there's multiple releases you'll have to edit the track lists individually. You'll also have to edit the work separately.
      • kirvesAxe
        lazybookwyrm[m], thanks :)
      • I guess I'll do the edits once I have gotten around taking decent photos of the album cover and back cover (the latter one specially as proof about the incorrect name)

is a simple "2 in 1" album(s) rerelease generally considered a compilation, or no?
      • I thought it was not, but poring over the style guides again, the only specific mention of those is they should be a separate group (duh). but not whether they're compilation secondary or no
      • lazybookwyrm[m]
Think so, the ones I can remember seeing were compilations

        depends on the cover/title
      • I've seen albums reissued with extra tracks from an EP (it's 2 in 1 but kept the album's artwork and title)
      • Lotheric_ is now known as Lotheric

      • is a compilation

How many votes do you need for instant song name change that's wrong?
      • DavidJohnson[m]
I think it’s 3 votes for any edits to be immediately applied?
      • magnog[m]
Ok nice can you vote this up please?
      • Lotheric
        voted
      • magnog[m]
Thanks maybe it takes a while to update
      • Lotheric
If your edit receives three unanimous yes votes, it will generally be applied after 1 hour. If it is considered a destructive edit, however, the edit will be applied after 48 hours to allow adequate time for other editors to review.
      • JollyRgrs
magnog[m]: at least according to https://flutteringdragon.bandcamp.com/album/ild... it should be "Curtain - cloth". did oyu include a link of where you think it should be "Curtain-Cloth"?
      • and then back of album cover, looks like it is all lowercase (everything) as "curtain - cloth" (But still with spaces on either side of the dash)
      • Lotheric
I'll approve the edit (since it's an improvement over the original title so that you can apply another edit to fix the title if you wish to
      • done
      • no more waiting :)
      • magnog[m]
Sorry this wasn't my release I was just correcting that track name because I knew it was wrong
      • You want me to change it all lowercase?
      • JollyRgrs
magnog[m]: on bandcamp (I think the label put it there?) it is one way, on the back of the CD it is another, but I was mentioning they both had spaces around the hyphen
      • JadedBlueEyes joined the channel
      • whereas you made it a single hyphenated word. idk the difference as I don't know the song, etc. just speaking what I noticed
      • trolley has quit
      • Lotheric
it's in lowercase on the physical release : https://www.discogs.com/release/341181-Ildfrost...
      • magnog[m]
Yeah it seems like many websites have their own version of how it should be
      • Lotheric
        hard to prove or disprove
      • BobSwift[m]
And when making changes, please always cite the source of the information backing up the change (with links if possible). This will help voters now, and provide information if the change is questioned in the future. Thanks.
      • Lotheric
I prefer to go with proper capitalization when it's not clear
      • BobSwift[m]
        (In an edit note.)
      • magnog[m]
I'm just gonna change it all to the way it is on the CD that way it is correct information
      • trolley joined the channel
      • Lotheric
You don't have to make everything perfect in one edit. My philosophy is to vote yes on improvements and if it can be further improved, someone else can do it. Don't overedit, if unsure, it's better to leave as is
      • JollyRgrs
when in doubt, the back of the CD can't be wrong, right? :D
      • magnog[m]
Ok I'll leave it for someone else
      • JollyRgrs
but sometimes i've seen where the bandname is different (all caps, first char upper, all lower). same band, 3 diff albums, 3 diff ways. really pissed me off when trying to sort out what folder to put them in
      • BobSwift[m]
Sometimes the back of the CD can be VERY wrong. πŸ˜‰
      • Lotheric
as Bob says, citing your sources is a good way to get yes votes
      • JollyRgrs
BobSwift[m]: not for that specific release :P
      • but yes, i know CDs can even be wrong
      • BobSwift[m]
Yeah, an edit comment I see far too often is something like "fixing it because it's wrong". That doesn't really tell anyone much, because you're probably not fixing it because it's right. πŸ˜€
      • magnog[m]
Bob Swift: so what would be a good example of an edit can you show me?
      • BobSwift[m]
I mean, people really don't need to say what they're doing in the edit note because you can see from the edit itself. The important thing for the edit note is to show why you're making the edit (with proof and links if at all possible).
      • I'll see if I can find an example for you.
      • magnog[m]
        Thanks
      • BobSwift[m]
Here's one of my recent edits adding a relationship to a release. It cites my source of the information and includes a link. https://musicbrainz.org/edit/116701104
      • JollyRgrs
so curious, other than drawing attention to it, how do people see edits?
      • does an edit on something you previously submitted create an email alert? or do you just have to randomly look for edits to approve?

I check for "subscribed entities" and "subscribed editors" every day.
      • DavidJohnson[m]
On the musicbrainz site, you can click on the β€œEditing” drop down menu and then click vote on edits, which takes you here: https://musicbrainz.org/vote

matrix images don't come through to IRC it seems
      • BobSwift[m]
The image is just a picture of the "My data" dropdown from the MusicBrainz menu when you are logged in.
      • kirvesAxe
BobSwift[m], the link won't open an image, it looks like some kind of js error page
      • JollyRgrs
yeah, I guess for people who check in on the daily. I am interested in the albums that I own, but don't have really much/any interest in ones I don't own. I didn't know how others did it
      • BobSwift[m]
That's what the entities thing does. For all my owned music, I put them in a collection and then subscribe to the collection.
      • (I thinks that's how I did it.)
      • You can also see / edit your subscriptions under your account name dropdown.

back in the day, open edits where shown at the top of the page, I miss that,on any spesific entity with open edits they'd show those edits first, thne things you sbscribed to, then any random edit
      • it was turnedoff for everyone buy autoeditor first, and thne with the ngs it was turned off permanently
      • BobSwift[m]
And under your account preferences you can set what notifications you receive and how often.
      • LupinIII
i still miss it. it had soem issues, it's true, but i think some of the ideas of it should bere-introduced
      • mb felt more social too tbh
      • Lotheric
      • you can go there to vote on edits
      • also
      • there are "reports" for things to fix
      • JollyRgrs
LupinIII: i am never one to want something to scope creep themselves into oblivion, but to gain more activity/interest in MB, having an option to scan in discs by barcode to "Add to your collection" and/or even trying to group people together based on scrobble data might be a way to make it more social again. and I don't suggest "facebook" like social, but just like an irc/matrix/discord
      • channel/server. being SOMEWHAT social brings activity and activity brings a better maintained database
      • LupinIII
i mean i think the android app has the barcode scan thing? πŸ€”
      • JollyRgrs
i never even though to check for an android app for mb :D
      • Lotheric
You can search by barcode here: https://beta.musicbrainz.org/search
      • JollyRgrs
man... if i had known that... i could have taken a handful of discs at a time, scanned them in and made sure they were all in MB before I started ripping them, so when I ripped, it was all done by then :D
      • oh well
      • Lotheric
You can use Picard to submit DiscID, no need to rerip
      • BobSwift[m]
If you're a purist, you may want to take some extra care because it is common for different releases (in a release group) to have the same barcode.
      • JollyRgrs
Lotheric: yeah, i'm already 600+ CDs deep into my process. I've only used picard for the discid a few times
      • BobSwift[m]
That is especially important if you're submitting a DiscID.
      • Lotheric
If you used a ripper with logs, you can submit DiscID just by pasting the TOC from the logs in a website
      • JollyRgrs
BobSwift[m]: yeah, i've noticed that. I try to take action when i notice, but also using abcde (it uses MB for lookup) so when that doesn't find it, I would normally turn to (plug your ears) the discogs option in mp3tag
      • i'm running ARM (Automatic ripping machine) but wasn't storing logs either (it does have discID in the logs, I just didn't save the logs)
