what is the general opinion on "implicit" relationships? specifically, i see sometimes see releases being added and then the features on each track are added as "performers" to their respective recordings. in my mind, (and this is just my personal feeling), the recording-artist relationships should be documentation of explicit credits written in liners or booklets, etc.
      • 2026-07-27 20801, 2026

      • levi_op[m]
if i'm wrong about this feeling, does that mean everyone should be adding "vocal performance" relationships for every single recording by an artist where their voice is heard?
      • 2026-07-27 20858, 2026

      • reosarevok[m]

      • reosarevok[m]
That then allows data users to know where they actually sing :)
      • 2026-07-27 20804, 2026

      • reosarevok[m]
(as opposed to, say, instrumentals released under their name)

        makes sense i guess
      • 2026-07-27 20807, 2026

      • levi_op[m]
in that case, i'm surprised i don't see _more_ edits just adding vocal performance relationships for popular releases
      • 2026-07-27 20819, 2026

      • reosarevok[m]
Well, most people don't add relationships at all 🤷‍♂️
      • 2026-07-27 20829, 2026

      • levi_op[m]

      • 2026-07-27 20840, 2026

      • reosarevok[m]
But in most releases, I do expect you'd still find a credit like "vocals: X" in the notes / booklet if one exists
      • 2026-07-27 20846, 2026

      • reosarevok[m]
I guess some might be truly implied
      • 2026-07-27 20829, 2026

      • levi_op[m]
for most genres, yeah, but i primarily work with hip-hop releases where "vocals" isn't really a term that's used

      • reosarevok[m]

like people will add "performer" relationship but not vocal performer even though it's obvious that it's their voice

I have a record coauthored by an artist with pretty much none info of them. Their spotify profile is empty besides that one song, no bio, no profile picture, no nothing, with a pretty generic name that other artists (not in musicbrainz) already use, so I was wondering what should I do.

you'll often just see recording location or engineers or mixing credits for an entire release in a booklet, not individual tracks

but sometimes people will add all of the mixers / engineers / recording places to every recording on the release

i've always thought you should use release-level relationships if you aren't sure about the specific recordings. is that right?
