I'm a scaredy creature so I tend to crop my scans with a maximum of maybe like, a few pixels (at 1200 dpi) inwards even if it means the other side will have a bit of the background poking through

highly recommend looking at craigslist/facebook marketplace/goodwill/whatever other secondhand ventures are in your area for scanners. if you can score a CCD for cheap ("cheap" for a good CCD being <= $100 USD) then they make for gorgeous scans <3
i have a pretty nice printer with a flat glass 1200 dpi scanner. the main issue was just that thing i was scanning wasn't being held down perfectly flat onto the scanner. putting some extra paper behind helped a bunch. there were still some small corner spots that had taken a little bit of wear (as you can see in the image i sent) that are visible in the final image but the crop is pretty much without visible edges
