So even Picard doesn't seem to actually *display* the fingerprint for my audio files. I generate them... and this puts an icon in the "fingerprint status" column... but no where does it actually say what the AcoustID is

[Jinx (IRC)](https://matrix.to/#/@irc_Jinx:chatbrainz.org): select an individual track for which you’ve generated a fingerprint, then look for the “acoustid fingerprint” row in the bottom section
2026-09-21 26422, 2026

there is no such row. not from my own audio files.

it seems if i first do a Scan (requiring online interaction) then it'll show in the right pane
2026-09-21 26409, 2026
Jinx
(or rather: will show in the bottom pane when i select a file in the right pane)
2026-09-21 26400, 2026
Jinx
doesn't show for a "Lookup" however--even if i subsequently select the "folder" in the right pane and say "Generate AcoustID Fingerprints"

@Jinx: yes, you need to use Scan for the AcoustID to be set. Only Scan will query the AcoustID service.
2026-09-21 26445, 2026
Jinx
but isn't the whole point of AcoustID to be able to identify the local files?
2026-09-21 26443, 2026
Jinx
i.e. isn't that what "Scan" is computing in the first place in order to match it to the online database?
2026-09-21 26403, 2026
outsidecontext[m
Yes, scan does that. It generates a acoustic fingerprint from the local file and queries the AcoustID dervice
2026-09-21 26405, 2026
outsidecontext[m
Ah, no. Locally it generates an acoustic fingerprint. The AcoustID is what the AcoustID service assigns for a fingerprint.

2026-09-21 26447, 2026
outsidecontext[m
If a scan finds a result then the link between a MB recording and the AcoustID is already there. If it doesn't, you can match the file otherwise to a recording. Once done there is a button in the Picard toolbar to submit the fingerprints
2026-09-21 26437, 2026
outsidecontext[m
This works after a scan, because it calculated the fingerprint. You can also use "generate fingerprints", this generates only the fingerprints without the online lookup. Afterwards you can also submit them for files matched to a recording

@Jinx: The fingerprint is not the AcoustID, the AcoustID is not calculated but a unique ID assigned by the AcoustID server. The AcoustID groups similar fingerprints. The fingerprint itself gets calculated from the audio. In its raw form it is a list of numbers, but it is usually shown compressed. You can enable Picard to write the fingerprint to a tag in the fingerprinting options. It is off by default, as the data can be

Jinx: you do generate the acoustid locally. acoustid uses chromaprint, which is one implementation of an ascoustic fingerprint.
reosarevok[m]: iamtheblackmetal: the album was released in 1985 with no date mentioned but it list the Kurzweil 250 as an instrument which wasn't available until 1984 so it's a pretty limited range. currently mb says it was recorded in 1981 which is obviously wrong (a later reissue printed that but it's considered a mistake now)
