Hello again. Does anyone know how to get the album art properties from Picard?
Also, does anyone use whipper to rip their cds?
pgpb joined the channel
Well, I figured out the answer to my first question. Just right click on the album art and select "Show more details" I don't see an option to pick from the various plugins, though.

Does anyone know how to choose a different album cover in Picard without using local files? It's pulling up the cover for the normal release, not the version I have.

CatQuest
on the release you can left click on *it* and select "other version" and differnt ones (with the attaced artwork) should be loaded

I had the correct release but it wasn't showing the correct album art.
I'm assuming one of the cover art providers was providing just the normal release artwork because it didn't have the other.
Not sure.

Likely that's the case. Cover art providers are checked in the order that you have them listed and will use the image from the first provider that returns one. If you want one specific to your release, then "Cover Art Archive" should be the first one on your list.
CatQuest
oh yes, if you chose "release group artwork" over "Cover Art Archive" then it will select the defaulty artwork (wich is seet on mb)
rdswift
In the Cover Art Archive settings, you can also specify the size. If you specify 1200px then it will not return anything if the image size is less than 1200px. That stops you from getting a "postage stamp" image for your specific release.

PelvicSorcery: Which cover art providers do you have configured and in which order?
If you want the album art matching your release put the Cover Art provider first

I have the order rdswift gave me yesterday. Is there no way to look at the various options returned and pick the best?
Right now I have AudioDB, fanart, CAA Release, CAA, Allowed URLs, Amazon, Deezer.
rdswift
No, because it stops after the first returned image.
PelvicSorcery
That is unfortunate. :(
Maybe I should submit a feature request. Default to the first found but allow the option to look at the others.

What is the difference between CAA and CAA Release?
outsidecontext
PelvicSorcery: TheAudioDB and fanart.tv have the focus of offering best looking artwork that represents an album / release group, they do not deal with differences of different releases. If you prefer the artwork exactly as on the release you have then use CAA
PelvicSorcery
outsidecontext CAA or CAA Release?
outsidecontext
Difference between "CAA" and "CAA Release Group" is that the first gives you the cover art as set for the release, while the latter will give you the cover art set for the release group. That's usually the vest looking one and / or the one that represents that release group best.
Again, if you want the version for the release, use CAA first. You can use CAA Release Group as a fallback.
PelvicSorcery
Okay, so when one version of the cd uses a completely different cover, CAA is the one I want.
This is confusing.
outsidecontext
Some people prefer visual quality over correct release, those probably should set CAA RG first, the CAA
PelvicSorcery
I'm trying to get the best of both.
Also, my albums all seem to be coming in at 700x700 even though I have everything configured to use as big as possible art.
outsidecontext
That's the cover art size for TheAudioDB or fanart.tv, don't know right now which one uses 700x700
But both services have consistent sizes for all their cover art
PelvicSorcery
rdswift From your 1200x suggestion previously, can I assume that setting to Full size will return an image even if it's only 100x100, etc?
Speaking of the other providers, what is a medium image? I have the option to use them instead of front but I don't know what they are.
Yep. It made immediate sense as soon as you said that it was an image of the cd. My brain just hadn't parsed it that way.
rdswift
I always think of "medium" as size first, then have to correct myself. ;-)
<PelvicSorcery> rdswift From your 1200x suggestion previously, can I assume that setting to Full size will return an image even if it's only 100x100, etc? I believe that's what will happen. I haven't tested it though.
outsidecontext
Yes, I stumbled over that as well. The sites actually call it "CD Art", maybe that is the wording I should have used in the plugin's configs as well
PelvicSorcery
outsidecontext Medium makes sense. I just didn't parse that context.
rdswift
Thing is, we use "medium" pretty much everywhere else to mean CD (or vinyl, etc.)
PelvicSorcery
rdswift Agreed. Hence why I said it makes sense. :)
Also, since I rearranged the order I'm getting nice and big album art. Thanks. :)
Although the big covers are apparently giving Plex pause. :D

PelvicSorcery: cover art is still one of the areas Picard needs quite some improvement. Hopefully we can make some progress here. There are a couple of tickets about that, e.g. https://tickets.metabrainz.org/browse/PICARD-2121 . And having the ability to later choose between different images by different providers is definitely on my personal wishlist :)
BrainzBot
PICARD-2121: Add cover art image processing options
PelvicSorcery
Yes, I would definitely like those changes.
What is Picard written in?
outsidecontext
Python, using PyQt5 for the user interface
rdswift
PelvicSorcery, as for adding a ticket requesting a new feature to download the coverart from all enabled providers and allow the user to choose, please go ahead. It might be a while before it gets worked on, but at least it'll be in the system. I just checked and there is no such request currently on the books.
PelvicSorcery
Okay. I'll try and remember to do that later. Need to finish what I'm working on first. :)
rdswift
👍

Also, the reason I asked about Whipper was because I ripped a CD and it included the release comment into the folder name. I don't recall it doing that prior to my Picard change so I was trying to figure out if Whipper used Picard anywhere.
I'm assuming not and that I just wasn't observant previously.
rdswift
I don't think it does, but perhaps it uses the enabled Picard tagging scripts? Easy test would be to disable that script in Picard and try the rip again.

PelvicSorcery
Which is more effort than just asking here. :D
just1602 joined the channel
It's mainly academic as I rename everything in Picard anyways.
outsidecontext
whipper added the disamiguation comment to the release title for some time, in version 0.10 they added an option to disable this behavior again
rdswift
Freso would possibly know, as they have been part of the whipper team.
PelvicSorcery
outsidecontext I'm still learning all of the whipper options. Last time I did any ripping morituri was still the goto.
rdswift
Sorry, outsidecontext. You ninja'd me on that.
outsidecontext
I actually don't know much about whipper, but I sometimes look what they are doing. I have used it for testing, but my personal CD ripping needs are rather simple. Usually I still use Sound Juicer for that
PelvicSorcery
I use it because I'm on linux and I've done far too much ripping to have any patience with bad rips.
It's also why I use MB instead of cddb, etc.
outsidecontext
whipper is definitely a great tool :)
PelvicSorcery
I think I've ripped my entire collection at least 4-5 times.
This is interesting. After moving CAA to the top, now I'm getting some covers at 500x where before I was getting them at 700x.
outsidecontext
CAA originally provided only original upload size and 500px and 250px downscaled versions. Later on a 1200px version was added. I don't know exactly, but well possible that not all cover art is provided as 1200
And I think Picard falls back to smaller sizes if you have configured it to use 1200px and that's unavailable
PelvicSorcery
I just want the biggest file I can get appropriate to my release.
