I have bought three separate copies of a CD release, and every one fails to rip, with two separate drives. Could it be something about this release itself and not just the discs?

aidalgol: it could be. Small-size runs (unmastered, just burned from a PC or industrially, but not mastered) are more likely to have problems ripping.
      • Especially if the problems show up toward the end of the disc.
      • aidalgol
They're all over the disc. And this looks professionally done: https://www.discogs.com/release/877082-The-Donn...
      • Cheezmo_
Pretty odd that something of that vintage would have trouble ripping. Are They CR-R?
      • aidalgol
        They looked pressed to me.
      • derwin
the fact that it's enhanced is suggestive that might be the issue
      • what software are you using to rip?
      • aidalgol
        rubyripper
      • derwin
btw : < vzctr> Stage names don't get sorted second name first, right?
      • vzctr
        👀
      • derwin
my understanding was that stage names that are like real names get sorted like names
      • but that might be an incorrect understanding
      • crism
aidalgol: silver look, or slightly bluish?
      • (It does seem likely mastered, but you know those punks with their DIY…)
      • Could just be a bad master, or you got 3 scratched-up copies. Try polishing them? IDK.
      • aidalgol
crism: Silver, and it has Warner Music Group logo on the centre ring.
      • vzctr
So under that convention it would be "Lamar, Kendrick" for sure, and "Ace Hood" for sure, but probably "Juelz Santana", "Action Bronson", and I assume "Rick Ross"
      • aidalgol
Man, I can *not* manage to get a good rip of an Enhanced CD.
      • danimal4 has left the channel
      • I can't even *play* it with VLC.
      • I mean, it can play, but it's *really* scratchy.

@aidalgol, I guess try another ripping software and see what happens. There looks to be a perfect rip of that exact release on a *record scratch* website so it should be possible? Weird though

      • Erin
        well
      • ...iono
      • interviews with big5 or faang or whatever you want to call rich people who run the world ... are annoying and exhausting and have never ended well for me
      • like, apparently having a google interviewer speechless due to some cleverness wont get you hired
      • i had github tell me "you passed the whole set, congratulations ... there were only two people at all that did ... so we're hiring the other one" -.-
      • or a ... lets just say big consulting company ... rejected me because i dont have experience with ... something i definitely have experience with [and they didnt ask]
      • i very much would like this particular one to lead to something for a lot of reasons ... but ... it's hard to get your hopes up with big companies
      • well, there's ... more concerns but this is not the place

hard to know what's going on behind the scenes, I feel like often places already have someone earmarked but are required to interview

      • aidalgol
aerozol: I've even tried EAC, and it couldn't do it. I'm suspicious of those rips I'm finding.
      • aerozol
Really interesting! I reckon the EAC forums (or similar) will give you more useful info
      • Since people on MB aren't really pro at ripping (as far as I know!)
      • donalhunt[m]
Most of the big companies use feedback from multiple interviewers to decide who to hire. As long as there are no major red flags, you'll keep getting interviews for the role. Once they have feedback from 4-6 employees, they review and send the packet to a hiring committee who say yay/nay.
      • You're as much in the hands of the interviewers presenting a good case to hire you than anything. If they don't provide a good argument, you aren't getting hired. :(
      • Erin
i still feel like "this person found a solution 3000 candidates and 200 employees missed" is a pretty compelling thing >.>
      • CatQuest
aerozol: people of mb are totes pro at ripping â„¢ (idk I've seen discussions in this very chan about rippers etc "EAC" "cdparanoia")
      • i feelt dumb sayimg I use like itunes/wmp
      • aerozol
I mean you shouldn't using those so :P
      • but yeah there's probably some pros hanging out!! I should never underestimate the wide swathe of nerdery that MB caters to :O

aidalgol: CDs have a very thin top layer with label stuff etc. it might be possible that the label side is damaged, while the bottom looks clean
      • kepstin
yeah, the actual data on a CD is in the top layer, right under the printed label.
      • SothoTalKer
other than that, if they are indeed copy protected, it should be shown somewhere with a label/sticker or a missing compact disc logo
      • kepstin
(on DVDs the data is in the middle sandwiched between two thin plastic layers, and on blu-ray the data layer is on the bottom of the disc)
      • SothoTalKer
DVDs made the right choice :D
      • kepstin
if you've ever heard of some manufacturer selling a "blu-spec cd", that just means they made the CD using the new harder lacquer material developed for protecting the bottom of blu-ray disks from scratching.
      • no audio difference, might be marginally less vulnerable to scratches on the top of the disc :)
      • SothoTalKer
        who buys CDs today? :>
      • kepstin
        ... me? :)
      • SothoTalKer
anyway, if you are on windows and have a proper drive for audio extraction like some 15 year old plextor drives, you can try something like https://github.com/saramibreak/DiscImageCreator...
      • PopperBruda joined the channel
      • kepstin
huh. interesting, both the plextor drives i have are on that list :) all the audio cds i have rip using normal tools tho.
      • ev
kepstin: the most amusing thing about shm-cd, blu-spec CD etc is they're actually more brittle than normal CDs
      • and the SHM-SACDs have a green label at the top, taking the sharpie-round-disc-rim myth to the extreme
      • kepstin
makes sense, it's a material which is designed to maintain shape of the smaller pits/lands of the bluray format, so harder/less flexible might be the tradeoff for that.
      • ev
well, there's only negatives here because they are more expensive and brittle, with no discernible difference in the data on the thing
      • kepstin
i think i might have 1 or 2 shm-cds, but that's only because the albums in question weren't available on standard cd formats.
      • SothoTalKer
kepstin: well, that tool was created for other purposes, but it is possible to use it to copy audio CDs aswell: http://wiki.redump.org/index.php?title=CD_Dumpi...
      • usually an image gets created and you can use something like isobuster or a virtual drive to do the ripping - or just manually add a wave header :D
      • if you use EAC and that works fine for you, no need for DIC

Hi Folks, trying to add an album and it says 'You must enter a title and select an artist for every track.' Titles are added, all Artist entries are light grey other than 1 which has green background
      • As a new release in to musicbrainz that is
      • atj
G0d: the green background means that you have assigned a valid artist from the database. Is it a various artist release?
      • G0d
No album featuring others in colaboration
      • atj
Are you importing the release using a userscript or adding it manually?
      • G0d
        Trying manually through the site
      • atj
OK, well using a userscript will save you a lot of time
      • Anyway, on the "Release Information" tab, you have entered "Gerry Driver" right?
      • (in the artist field)
      • G0d
        Yeh also green
      • atj
OK, go to the "Tracklist tab" and click the Edit button next to the artist column
      • You need each artist field in the tracklist tab to have a green background
      • G0d
        Ahh
      • atj
Are you adding featuring artist credits for each track?
      • G0d
Yeh, I've fixed them all now and that is now submitted, thanks
      • atj
can you give me a link to the release so I can check it? :)
      • G0d
