I'm trying to add a CD release and there is already one that exists but the information is all off.  There is a digital release that has the correct titles, album art, etc.  Is there an easy way to copy that information over or should I just delete the existing CD release and recreate it?  The existing CD release has no disc ids, etc attached.
      • reosarevok
        PelvicSorcery: how off is it?
      • (link too maybe?)
      • PelvicSorcery
      • That's the CD release.  I added the first discid.

        One sec :)
      • PelvicSorcery
No problem.  Was just checking. :)
      • evelyn
I think the second disc just has the wrong credits for the titles and such, but if it has the right track list, you should just add the disc ID
      • we can merge the recordings and clean it up later
      • PelvicSorcery
That's what I was trying to do but I wasn't sure how best to merge the recordings and clean them up.
      • Also, I assume the & artist notation is better than the , artist notation.
      • reosarevok
        Not necessarily
      • zer0bitz_ has quit
      • But in this case, the cover seems to have &, so
      • PelvicSorcery
That's why I say that the digital release has more correct info.
      • Not sure what happened with the cd release.
      • reosarevok
These are easy changes, in any case
      • PelvicSorcery
How?  What process am I missing?
      • reosarevok
Well, you already have open edits to change it to CD
      • Same should be done to change , to & in the join phrase
      • And I just entered merges for the recordings
      • PelvicSorcery
Yes.  I tried doing the recordings but couldn't figure out how to get them all done correctly.
      • evelyn
PelvicSorcery: you open a given recording, click merge, open another one, click merge, then it lets you merge
      • PelvicSorcery
        I kept running into issues.
      • reosarevok
evelyn: I'm using the mass-merge tool now :)
      • PelvicSorcery: edit the tracklist, and when you run into the next issue, ask :)
      • PelvicSorcery
I assumed there was such a functionality but I couldn't figure out how to make it work.
      • reosarevok
I'll approve the change to CD, assuming they are not CDrs
      • PelvicSorcery
        No, it's a commercial pressing.
      • reosarevok
The mass merge tool is a userscript, there's no such thing on the site itself :)
      • PelvicSorcery
I have no idea why it got marked as CDR.
      • reosarevok
        Maybe there should be, but
      • Discogs had it as such
      • Probably the only reason
      • evelyn
in principle, it looks like the digital download is credited correctly for the remixes. https://musicbrainz.org/doc/Style/Titles
      • PelvicSorcery
That's why I was trying to figure out how to copy the digital info over to the physical release.
      • Once the mass merge is done I can add the disc id of the second disc.
      • evelyn
i believe you can just add it now? if that second disc has 11 tracks
      • PelvicSorcery
Okay, I'll do it in a minute once I finish what I'm working on.
      • evelyn
even if you rip it now and the tags are a bit funny, you can always just re-tag it later
      • PelvicSorcery
        Ew. :)
      • evelyn
i think the main thing would be correctly setting the titles according to the style guidelines. if you feel confident enough to do that (essentially set capitalisation, and the remix titles and credits), you can post the result here and we can vote for it / suggest changes
      • PelvicSorcery
Oh, that reminds me.  Someone said the new version of the bandcamp script would automatically copy the album art at original size but that doesn't seem to happen for me.
      • evelyn I always forget the style guidelines.  I keep getting yelled at for that.
      • evelyn
there's a couple of ways to get the large cover art from bandcamp. if you open the image in a new tab and change the suffix from _10 or _16 to _0, you get the full-sized JPG version (if they upploaded a jpeg)
      • you can use the image max url extension / userscript / website to get the url of the full sized image too
      • PelvicSorcery
I just manually save and upload it.  But someone told me that the script would do it automatically.
      • I didn't know if I was using it incorrectly or what.
      • evelyn
      • I have no idea how that script works but the biggest warning sign in edits is that the person making the edit picked a 1200*1200 image
      • and they think that's the largest size even though those images are compressed, sometimes obviously so
      • PelvicSorcery
I just click on the original image link in the album.  And I like the 1200*1200  images because it looks better on my screen. :)
      • evelyn
yea, well, don't upload those to musicbrainz
      • incidentally, that example above demonstrates the effects of bandcamp's bad JPEG comppression nicely too
      • PelvicSorcery
What am I supposed to upload?
      • evelyn
the image ending in _0 or _1
      • _10 is 1200*1200, badly compressed
      • PelvicSorcery
Ah, okay.  I thought you were telling me not to upload large images.
      • I hate the small compressed ones that Plex defaults to.
      • evelyn
hmm... is there a bug in the ordering of this? https://musicbrainz.org/series/4b146781-65ee-48...
      • reosarevok
PelvicSorcery: is "Nosce (Esther Silex & Kotelett Remix)" supposed to be "Nosce (Almost Falling remix)"?
      • evelyn
or is 2021 a more 'early' date than 2021-07-16?
      • yes, that must be it. so i ought to workk out the release date of those other records..
      • PelvicSorcery
        reosarevok Yes, that's correct.
      • reosarevok
Ok, I'll fix the titles (copy the ones from the digital)
      • And fix the track artists of the digital one
      • And add remixer relationships instead
      • PelvicSorcery
        Where's my cheer emoji? :)
      • reosarevok
        Should be better now :)
      • PelvicSorcery
I just added the second disc id.
      • Can we copy over the album cover as well?
      • reosarevok
You can reuse it if you're sure it's 100% the same (same proportions etc) for the CD
      • PelvicSorcery
It's the same picture.  Don't know how to check proportions.
      • reosarevok
Well, if you have a digipak for example then it wouldn't be square :)
      • PelvicSorcery
        It's a standard jewel case.
      • reosarevok
        Then it might be :)
      • PelvicSorcery
Wait a second.  reosarevok You also do whipper, correct?
      • reosarevok
        I don't :)
      • Someone in the community did IIRC
      • PelvicSorcery
Oh, darn.  I was about to get all excited.
      • Yes, but I forget who and I'm never online when they are.
      • I unfortunately have some rare cds that won't rip correctly and I'm not sure if there's a better way to use whipper on them.
      • I'm tempted to buy one of those cleaning machines but reviews are all over the place.
      • evelyn
if you've cleaned them with a microfibre cloth, there's no point getting a professional cleaning machine. record shops / shops that sell video games often have a machine that shaves off a layer of the bottom of the disc, to make the disc playable again
      • you can achieve a similar result with something abrasive like toothpaste, but it can be quite easy to accidentally rub too much and expose the metal substrate
      • PelvicSorcery
None of the shops anywhere near me offer the machine as a service.  There's one that does just a cleaning but that didn't help enough to rip the whole disc.
      • The discs are playable, but whipper can't get two identical rips from them.
      • That's why I'm contemplating getting an actual abrasive machine, not just one of the cleaning ones.
      • kepstin
it's very difficult to destroy a CD using abrasive stuff on the bottom
      • since the data layer is actually on the top of the disk (right under the label)
      • making the plastic too thin will affect readability tho
      • (the drive expects the plastic to bend the light a certain amount)
      • PelvicSorcery
I just don't want to spend a few hundred to fix twenty cds.  Unfortunately, I can't find any place that offers it as a service.
      • evelyn
is there no-one on e.g. ebay?
      • rdswift
