aerozol
Totally! Glad it was okay, I didn't want to be speaking for you either... Why is MB/BB etc like walking on eggshells sometimes haha

reosarevok Yo! This is EthanRBoyle. You've been helping me with corrections, but email is really slow so I came here since I have the time to add entries correctly.
reosarevok
Hi!
Happy to help
AssociateX
I had some problems with a compilation where I could not add the artists correctly, so I started using "various artists".
On each line I tried putting just the person associated with each song, but it would errors stating that I needed to put a title and artist on each line.
I hadn't tried figuring it out since.
But, I've also only been at this a couple of days now.
reosarevok
Oh
Did you leave the line white?
AssociateX
No.
reosarevok
You need to actively select the right result from the search
(So it turns green)
If not it shouldn't complain with that error, but dunno
AssociateX
I entered each song then put just the artist that did that song
reosarevok
Oh, I see. But if the artist background wasn't green, then it wasn't properly selected yet :)
So I bet that was the issue
You can try to edit the data, I'll happily approve the changes if they look good so that they skip the waiting period while you learn
AssociateX
Oh.... I know what I did then. On the first page I put all of the artists on one line.
The art has the back cover for which artist did which song.
Should the artist entry something other than all of the artists of the compilation?
reosarevok
AssociateX: the release artist seems fine
But for each track, you will want the specific artist for that track, yes
rdswift
<reosarevok> You need to actively select the right result from the search. That seems to trip up most beginner editors. I wonder if there's a way to have a more descriptive error message displayed in that case?
reosarevok
Maybe :) Something like "Ensure you have selected an artist for each track (the background for each track artist is green)."?
AssociateX: since they have multiple artists now (they default to the release artist) you can click "Edit" and eliminate all that do not apply
rdswift
Much better. That way they have a better idea of how to correct the problem that's preventing their edit from being saved.
reosarevok
rdswift: could I bother you to add a ticket?
AssociateX
Well, and that happened to me, I had no idea what the problem was that was stopping me from being able to save my entries.
rdswift
Sure. That's the same sort of issue with selecting the release group, except that that a new release group will be created. (That one still catches me once in a while.)
AssociateX, when you change the track artists, you can also update the artists on the recording. Edit the release and click on the "Recordings" tab. There should be a text box to "Update the recording artist credit to match the track artist credit."
reosarevok
It's not automatic because they don't always need to match (for example, the same recording can have English titles in one release and Japanese titles in another) :)
In fact, you have made the same edit request twice. You can probably cancel one of them.
AssociateX
I made the request many times, a few at first with the wrong artist. I canceled them all except for one with the correct artist.
rdswift
One other thing... Please, always leave an edit note on your edits explaining why the edit is entered and citing the source of the information supporting the edit. This will help people understand when they vote to approve an edit.
It also helps to clarify if there is a dispute in the future.
AssociateX
Okay
rdswift
Thanks.
AssociateX
I'm about three edits in without notes, but I will add moving forward.
rdswift
I know it seems like a PITA, but they really do add value.

BTW, thanks for your entries.
AssociateX
Right on
How is this for a note: Beginner cleaning up artists and recording artists.
rdswift
I would probably leave out the "beginner" part. ;-)
AssociateX
Okay
This going back and doing things right is really hampering my entering new errors. It's very time consuming.
lol
rdswift
Another hint (although I see you're almost done), is that you can mark all the changes and save it as a single edit. The system will automatically create all of the individual edits for you.
AssociateX
Okay
rdswift
Also, I've gone in and approved your changes.
AssociateX
Thank you. I saw that, too.
rdswift
Good on you for making the corrections yourself. That is very much appreciated.
AssociateX
If you want to take a look at any of my other entries, I'll clean up anything there too.
I've entered maybe 20 or less releases in the last two or three days.
I know I have a "various artist" in there a couple of times.
If you're going to change it, you could: 1) move the track artist from the title to the artist, and 2) update the recording artists. You can make all the changes at once, and submit the edit.
