Howdy! I have a question about our current guidelines to make ETI all in lowercase (except proper nouns). If I'm correct, the person who knows the most about this would be @reosarevok
      • I get that the capitalization rules are helpful with ambiguous titles like printer on booklets and if streaming services have their own rules that differ, but making them lowercase can get in the way for very specific information in the parentheses of track and release titles.
      • *printed on booklets
      • Assuming it was some kind of community decision that got codified in the docs in 2018, why? It seems weird next to the language-standard title casing everywhere else. I've heard that ETI "isn't part of the main title", so shouldn't go by the same rules, but this doesn't seem true

Hi, I want to undo the artist merge (its merge was done 2 years ago), but i think only way to revert merge is create new artist and move references to it. is it right?
      • cam1170 joined the channel
      • cam1170
Yes, you can create a new artist, and edit the relationships to go to the new artist instead. If the artist was previously merged, make sure you have a good reason for the relationships to go to the new artist instead.

      • holy wow, that release is *jacked*
      • oh huh, no, that was some release editor glitch I guess..
      • but I guess back in 2005 you could actually add a release without a label, eh?
      • nirvdrum has quit
      • kepstin
hmm? pretty sure you still can. doing that would be the expected way to handle adding a release where you don't know the label.
      • of course, back in 2005 the way label linking (via "release events") worked was very different from now.
      • derwin
I'm pretty sure it gives you an error?
      • " You haven’t selected a label for “Gorrillaz N Da Trunk (G.N.D.T)”. "
      • " If you're unsure about which one of the branded labels to use,
      • leave the label field blank "
      • but... you... can't.. do that?
      • aerozol
hmm, you can totally add releases without labels
      • maybe it's because you've written something into the label field but then didn't pick anything? the label field probably has to be empty
      • derwin
oh, weird, that totally is it.
      • I've always got something in there because I use importers
      • aerozol
hmm now that there's been a massive effort to make all the 'distributed by GOG.com' relationships, I'm thinking I might start adding something similar for Steam releases as well
      • Shall I just use 'distributed by Valve' or shall I make a new 'Steam' label?

        cam1170: what ETI?
      • If it's a title in the ETI, then it's supposed to get caps, it's when it's a generic thing like "extended club version" when it's not

Ooh I'm glad to have sparked discussion about the ETI thing. I was talking about how people say you should leave out "original motion picture soundtrack" and "deluxe edition" from the title and put some variation in the disambiguation, despite the disambiguation only being used to distinguish otherwise identical releases/titles. I have some ongoing
      • edits about this
      • CatQuest
I don't agree with the "frozen" one since the cover n osays it. but the others i agre. that's the name of the show, not an artist (these "character-as-artist" artists need to be culled. it's going way overboard)
      • those should only be if the composer or performer is completly unknowable
      • cam1170
I think it's the same as stage names, like "performs as"
      • CatQuest
an exeption for fictional charcters who are indeed "musical acts" like Gorlliaz and Dethklok
      • and we can do that with artist credits :/
      • cam1170
I think that Frozen soundtrack doesn't need to have it on the cover, they clearly added it to the digital release for a reason, and this avoids leaving out information that was in the source

devil's advocate: how is "original motion picture soundtrack" different from "bonus track"? especially if we're treating it as ETI
      • i don't really care much about how this needs to be entered, but it needs to be codified into the style guidelines
      • this discussion pops up over and over again and as someone who doesn't run into deluxe editions as much, i keep forgetting how we tend to do it
      • ninjin has quit
      • and then i either just copy the approach of another release (not knowing whether that's the right approach or not), or i just guess and do it the way it feels "right" to me
      • and that leads to inconsistency
      • ninjin joined the channel
      • kmerfeld joined the channel
      • another point: why is "original motion picture soundtrack" (generally) considered a subtitle on physical releases but treated as ETI on digital releases?
      • cam1170
People like to leave out stuff that's seenas fluff. "Bonus track" is seen as overused and not part of the real title of the track, something that's tacked on at a late stage. "Original motion picture soundtrack" isn't so generic, and is only left out by people who only like the "mainest of the main" title to go in the title field. Streaming
      • platforms who standardize their stuff normally leave out "bonus track" because it's so commonly seen as not the title.
      • I think the capacity for streaming platforms to designate subtitles is a recent development, and if they didn't include those bits it would be harder to find them in a search box, so if you search "frozen soundtrack" you'll find the right one faster. Same here, if you leave out those details it's harder to find.
      • It's information that's supposed to go on there, and is important for searching, and also being accurate to the source.

cam1170, ROpdebee https://musicbrainz.org/doc/Style/Specific_type... doesn't 100% specify it should be kept, but it does say "don't expand OST" which by itself implies "OST is part of the title"
      • skelly37 joined the channel
      • ROpdebee
but that's only for track titles, no?
      • anyway, when I said "needs to be codified into the style guidelines" I was referring to the ongoing discussion at https://community.metabrainz.org/t/should-delux... not specifically about OST subtitles
      • reosarevok
ROpdebee: not sure why that's actually under Track, that's a bit weird :D
      • The RG examples are also clearish, anyway https://beta.musicbrainz.org/doc/Style/Specific...
      • IMO Deluxe Edition should be in the title if printed title-like on the cover, but as a disambiguation or left off completely otherwise
