Hi all. Got a question about entering a classical release and conforming with the style. I understand that the release artist seems to usually have the composer, main performer(s) and conductor. And the track artist should be just the composer. I can do that no problem. What I am struggling with is how to set the *recording* artists, which from
      • what I have seen looking at other releases omit the composer. By default the recording artist seems to follow whatever you have set for the release artist, so it is including the composer. But I can't see a way to directly edit the recording artist field. Anyone willing to point me in the right direction?

        Hi luv2chill!
      • If you click on the song (recording) in the album, you can then edit the recording credits in the recording page you land on.
      • How the ‘recording’ is credited is not the same as how it is credited on a release/tracklist - if that makes sense?

      • Sciencentistguy: A bit late, but that pseudo-release looks good to me :)

      • luv2chill
sorry, got disconnected there. OK so if I click on a song name I see there is a track artist for it (which is the composer per the style guide) and then a "release artist", which is what I set up to include the composer's name in addition to the performers and conductor. Am I supposed to edit that "release" artist in this case to remove the
      • composer?
      • aerozol
Let me just open up a track to be able to explain it exactly
      • luv2chill
Perhaps this would be easier if I link you an example of a release that is set up the way I think it's supposed to be: https://musicbrainz.org/release/eadc7f04-d314-4...
      • So on the initial overview up top it says " Release by Mozart; Oleh Krysa, Ukrainian Chamber Orchestra, Theodore Kuchar"
      • And the track artist field is set to Mozart only per the style guide
      • but then in see for each track the "recording artist" is set to "Oleh Krysa, Ukrainian Chamber Orchestra, Theodore Kuchar"
      • aerozol
So, once you’re in a ‘recording’ page, it will show you the ‘Release Artist’. But that is not actually editable from this page anyway (you edit that via the release page). The credit at the top (‘recording by Liberace’) is what you will be editing if you click on ‘edit’ in this page. That’s what you want to change to be the performers
      • If you click on a song in your example you can click edit and see how they’ve done it: https://musicbrainz.org/recording/794d2fbc-370f...
      • Is that helpful at all? Confusing I know!
      • luv2chill
OK yeah I see that now. Looks like there is no way for me to edit all tracks in the recording at once, right? I will need to edit each one to remove the composer from the "recording artist"?
      • aerozol
Unfortunately, yes… I don’t edit much CSG (classical style guide), but when I do I credit the performers first, when creating the release, and then change the tracklist to the composer in another edit (because you can do that all from one page)
      • Once thing you could do is change the tracklist to credit the performers, and then in the recordings tab tick ‘update all recordings to use title’. Then I can apply that edit, and you can edit the tracklist to be just the composer again in another edit. If it really shits you to have to do it recording by recording that’s an option :)
      • luv2chill
Ah!! That was going to be my next question (i.e. how do I create a new release so it's set up that way from the get-go). Thank you
      • aerozol
        np
      • luv2chill
Nah I can do it... fortunately I only entered a few releases before I realized my error with the recording vs. release vs. track artists

Nice one, CSG is a headache quite frankly, but I feel like everyone with a hard-out classical library loves the result!
      • luv2chill
Yeah it's worth the extra effort
      • aerozol nods sagely, as if he is cool and listens to classical
      • haha well I'm not hardcore at all. I'm more into choral music which shares a lot of DNA with "classical", even though a lot of it is pretty modern
      • aerozol
I definitely see the benefit, considering how complex “classical” data can be, and how different relationships might be more or less important depending on your needs or what you’re browsing (e.g. performer vs composer)
      • But I am *very* glad it doesn’t take me as long to enter the stuff I mainly listen to, into MB :D
      • luv2chill
oh no doubt. I already entered the easy rock, pop, jazz stuff. I saved all the classical shit until the end because I knew it would be a slog :D
      • aerozol
Sounds like you’re doing A+ work, I probably entered classical wrong for… years. Oops. Luckily it’s all a start and fixable later.
      • luv2chill
Ha! Thanks, but there are folks far more diligent than I. I've seen some of the releases I added years back got really fleshed out with all the nuanced performer credits, etc. That's the beauty of a collaborative site--I can put the bare bones effort in and someone who cares more can flesh out all the meaty details.
      • I'm just trying to make sure I enter anything that's flat out wrong
      • better to leave it blank than make a bad assumption

It seems that this disc ID is matching two CDs from different releases (and even different albums and artists): https://musicbrainz.org/cdtoc/QieI_h521Zpx1rUnb...
      • Can someone please look into this and confirm that it shouldn’t be removed from any of these but just kept for both?
      • reosarevok
yvanzo: that's potentially legit with one-track discids, clashes are known to happen
      • I dunno about this specific case though
      • yvanzo
I’m pretty sure that the editor didn’t know about the second release, I’m not sure why they try to remove from it. Is it somehow suggested by the UI?

Can I piggyback on this question because I'm ripping CDs at present with XLD and a disc ID I expected to match with a release I added instead matched with a differently-named release (but identical tracks). So I am not sure if the same exact CD master was used to press two differently-named releases, or if someone previously matched the disc ID
      • incorrectly to that other release. In any case, if I ask XLD to associate the discID with a release it tells me it's already been associated with a release (i.e. it can only associate with one release). But it sounds like from what you're saying that isn't the case? Can I somehow associate this disc ID with the release that exactly matches the
      • release name, album art, etc?
      • Jormangeud
yvanzo: Looks like someone moved the Disc Id there from the other release: https://musicbrainz.org/edit/86619843
      • yvanzo
Jormangeud: Yes but for unclear reasons (no edit note).
      • luv2chill: XLD?
      • luv2chill: Interesting, it seems to be a bug of XLD then.
