Anyone want to help me clean? There'll be plenty of CDs to add to MusicBrainz!
CallerNo6
hibiscuskazeneko, that's true of copyrighted material, certainly. I don't know if copyright really covers (or is meant to cover) a phrase like that. I mean, how many ways are there to say the same thing? If you needed to come up with a different way to describe every metal band from texas, you'd need to start making new words, wouldn't you?
hibiscuskazeneko
It's kinds pointless to add info like that to the disamb when we have artist area fields
CallerNo6
You're not the only editor who feels that way.
I kind of like it. It makes artists easy to spot in a search.
I'm confused, though, about the artist area guideline.
drsaunders
you need the area because you can't see the area field when selecting an artist
CallerNo6
you see the area if you do a regular search, but yeah, for relationships the disambig is reallly helpful
Leftmost
Or editing track artists on a release.
CallerNo6
style/artist seems to discourage using areas smaller than country unless the artist "is most commonly associated with an area smaller than a country"
I don't really know how to apply that. Everybody's from somewhere, aren't they?
(well, maybe not the Monkees)
(okay, fine, a lot of groups are probably not from any one place)
Leftmost
Well, I think of U2 as being from Ireland, versus Nirvana as being from Seattle.
CallerNo6
Would that be true if you were Irish?
CatQuest
i thought u2 was american or something :P
sows what i know
shows*
Leftmost
Hard to say. I'm trying to answer that myself.
CallerNo6
Become Irish. It's the only way to be sure.
CatQuest
you're atleast leftmost. that's..
irland is leftmost in the uk?
Leftmost
Ireland isn't in the UK.
Though I also tend to think of Journey as American, not San Franciscan.
CatQuest
I said he wrong word for mening the stupid islands down there ffs. it's 4:40 >_<
also
also
yes
CallerNo6
In the Bay Area, Journey is totally thought of as a local band.
CatQuest
don't nag on me for saying there wrong word for some dumb place man, :rarg:!!!
CatQuest isn't really mad, sjut sleep deprived
CallerNo6
As is, say, Tom Waits. But he's probably not thought of that way worldwide.
Leftmost
No. I would also think of Tom Waits as American.
CatQuest
you guys are totally not even looking at what i'm writing. just having a conversation witouth me. well whatever
CatQuest goes back to binge-watching adventure time
CallerNo6
Right, so the guideline is weird because everybody sees it slightly differently. Naturally, to me all local musicians are local musicians.
Leftmost
I read it, but I didn't really have a response. :-P
CallerNo6, probably not everybody. Just lots of people. ;)
CallerNo6
Okay, so like, Guns n Roses?
I only think of LA, but that's probably not everybody's first thought.
Leftmost
I'd say American again
.
CallerNo6
haha. they were literally formed by members of L.A. Guns and Hollywood Rose.
What does a butt metal band need to do to be considered "LA" around here?
DocPlatypus joined the channel
Leftmost
Call themselves Los Angeles.
CallerNo6
I'll make some calls, see if we can get 'er done.
Leftmost
Even then, I might think they were posers from Ohio.
Sparklyballs has quit

CatQuest
"Posers from Ohio" sounds like a totes legit bandname
sorry, I want attention :(
CallerNo6
I have no reason to believe that that's not a band.
CatQuest
indeed
CallerNo6 catches himself having double-standards. Van Halen? Totally L.A,. Frank Zappa? not L.A.!
