      • anshuman73 wishes it does sometime soon
      • anshuman73
dpmittal: yes, comp science is worse
      • dpmittal
It's through an exam .... Which I'll be giving in March
      • dpmittal realizes he has a lot to study
      • gcilou
That's sad. But it's difficult to tell how a school will accept you because it's based on essays and such instead of scores
      • anshuman73
gcilou: that's true. Uncertainty is probably an issue for schools in US
      • atleast for a while
      • iliekcomputers
dpmittal: I've heard that IIIT-H (a great college for CS) takes in people based on stuff like IOI etc
      • ?
      • do they consider GCI as well?
      • gcilou
Definitely. That's why we apply to so many when we're not confident in scores and essays 😬
      • Sp4rrowh4wk
It's true that here we're lucky enough: if you pass the end of high-school exam with reasonably good grades, you're admitted; and then they kick out 60% of students by the end of first year. So we do get a chance to prove CS skills more than you seem to
      • kyan has quit
      • dpmittal
iliekcomputers: after ioi round they will have an interview round and then there they will see your academics ... But still only one college in india
      • iliekcomputers
dpmittal: CMI is pretty cool as well, from what I've heard.
      • dpmittal
They will consider GCI but a little bit..
      • iliekcomputers
But yeah, the "popular" IIT's and NIT's taking via physics, chem and math is pretty much a sham lol
      • dpmittal
        Ya if u know ... It's nice
      • *... It's nice ... Please omit if u know
      • anshuman73
CMI and IIIT-H are both a bit too difficult to get in ;)
      • gcilou
colleges also have to keep certain diversity percentages up, so in engineering, I may have better changes than Ohm for example, just for being a girl
      • iliekcomputers
anshuman73: all of the top colleges here are :P
      • anshuman73
and let's not forget IOI isn't easy either
      • iliekcomputers: yeah :p
      • gcilou
and they consider family background, race, religion, sexuality too
      • anshuman73
        gcilou: whaaaaa ?
      • gcilou
so it's just a really weird process
      • iliekcomputers
especially if you haven't completely given your life to physics, chem and math :)
      • anshuman73 hides in a corner
      • gcilou
anshuman73: yeah. and they want more diversity so the school ends up looking better
      • dpmittal shocked after seeing gcilou's 2nd last message
      • Sp4rrowh4wk
gcilou: is that even compatible with human rights?
      • anshuman73
iliekcomputers: well, Idk, I return home after 12 hors of academics most of the days these days, I don't know how much more time I can spend :p
      • gcilou: that's cool. I think India's got some schemes, but they're seldom implemented
      • except for the reservations...
      • gcilou
I mean, private schools can do whatever they want. It's not discrimination, but rather just wanting as many good diverse students as possible
      • dpmittal
        Wow ..
      • Sp4rrowh4wk
        meh - I'm thouroughly unconvinced
      • *thoroughly
      • iliekcomputers
Sp4rrowh4wk: haha, you don't know how bad it is in India lol
      • anshuman73
gcilou: that's actually a good idea. More diverse people, better it is ! I'm lucky to have experienced that in an international school for a while. Got friends from around the world now :p
      • Sp4rrowh4wk
I mean - who chooses the ratios, and is it really a good thing that someone be taken over someone with a better profile because they 'fit the stats'?
      • dpmittal
        iliekcomputers: u r in a college?
      • iliekcomputers
        iliekcomputers: an low-tier NIT
      • gcilou
heh. well that's why we have to try to look smart, impressive, unique, and diverse on applications
      • iliekcomputers
        I didn't study much chemistry :P
      • dpmittal
        Still a NIT....
      • gcilou
Sp4rrowh4wk: the school decides. and yes it's all politics
      • dpmittal
        NIT is very good
      • Sp4rrowh4wk
iliekcomputers: I knew it was 'bad' in a theoretical sense, but never really encountered it
      • anshuman73
iliekcomputers: I was hoping chem is the easiest :( Got tons of organic left tho...
      • gcilou
        if people like what they
      • *they're doing, they'll get more money
      • but I think it is a good idea
      • Sp4rrowh4wk
gcilou: wow. That enables a fuckton of loopholes
      • gcilou: but then again considering that India (correct me if I'm wrong) has some *serious* women in tech issues (or in anything), it's probably good
      • gcilou
        I wouldn't know
      • It's bad enough in the US
      • anshuman73
Sp4rrowh4wk: it does, the government's trying it's best.
      • gcilou: you should see in India, it's worse.
      • iliekcomputers
anshuman73: well, chem is the most scoring, but I'm not the best person to talk to about this.
      • iliekcomputers shudders from past experiences
      • gcilou
anshuman73: I have figured that it's bad. I have a female indian friend in CS who moved to the US to go to school
      • anshuman73
        mot of us *
      • gcilou: afaik, they don't give much to international students unless they're US citizens
      • Sp4rrowh4wk
US schools cost a damn lot compared to public education in Europe for often not much better before PhDs
      • you people are better off coming in Germany
      • or France
      • gcilou
        yes it's all too expensive
      • iliekcomputers
Sp4rrowh4wk: Germany is free public education almost, yes?
      • dboys_ joined the channel

[picard] samj1912 opened pull request #581: Change windows packager to download and install latest plugins (master...plugre) https://git.io/vMyqa
      • github has left the channel
      • Sp4rrowh4wk
iliekcomputers: AFAIK yes. France is for sure, and Switzerland here is 600.- CHF per semester, so nothing compared to USA. Life is awefully costly though, if you don't get a student job things get tough. But germany has some rather rad public unis
      • anshuman73: yeah, that's why I said come to Europe
      • anshuman73
Sp4rrowh4wk: I submitted a PR for the problem you reported (about the bug tracker not being linked) Let's hope it's merged soon by Leftmost, LordSputnik
      • Sp4rrowh4wk
we rock (and haven't *yet* elected the racist fucks)
      • anshuman73: dammit you beat me, I was reading the Contributing.md rn
      • Freso
        Sp4rrowh4wk: Gotta work faster! ;)
      • anshuman73
        😂
      • anshuman73 wonders why BookBrainz PRs aren't reported here
      • zas
      • Leo_Verto
anshuman73, because that's probably not set up \o/
      • Sp4rrowh4wk
Freso: well I'm revising for my EM exam at the same time, so... (procastination ^^)
      • samj1912
oh sorry, no idea how that happened
      • 1 sec
      • Sp4rrowh4wk
        (electromag)
      • anshuman73
        Leo_Verto: yeah...
      • Sp4rrowh4wk
Freso: also I don't know any js, my languages are haskell, scala, perl and C -- so I was figuring out what was where ^^
      • anshuman73
also, is there a reason why bookbrainz repos aren't attached to the Metabrainz account ?

[picard] samj1912 opened pull request #582: PICARD-916: Fix type error in initialization (master...picard916) https://git.io/vMymr
      • github has left the channel
      • Freso
anshuman73: Aren't they though? If any are not, then for historical reasons.
      • anshuman73
hmm, makes sense. But seeing that they are now under development, maybe it's a good idea to move the repos to MetBrainz's Github account ?
      • Freso signs out for the night
      • Freso
anshuman73: Ask LordSputnik or Leftmost about it.
      • anshuman73
        yes, ofc :)
      • I believe they have been pinged enough for tonight;)
      • Sp4rrowh4wk
iliekcomputers: http://sac.epfl.ch/partner-universities < this is a list of universities in Germany with which my school has partnerships (which means they have a good to excellent reputation in Europe). I believe most of them are public and (nearly?) free
      • anshuman73
Sp4rrowh4wk: i think iliekcomputers is already in a college ;) he did mention and indian univ a while ago
      • Sp4rrowh4wk
anshuman73: ah - indeed. Well it's out there FWIW ^^
      • mayhem
        gsoc application nearly complete. :)
      • dpmittal
        Wow
      • Freso
        Okay. I lied.
      • «GSoC 2017: Thanks for submitting MetaBrainz Foundation's application»
      • anshuman73: LordSputnik has never been pinged enough!
      • You must ping LordSputnik more@!
      • dpmittal
        Lel
      • Sp4rrowh4wk
        All ping the LordSputnik
      • Freso
mayhem: Oh. You started a MeB application too? I guess I'll mail OSPO then.
      • Freso really heads out now
      • armalcolite
gsoc, gci and now gsoc. phew. its already been a year now!
      • dpmittal
        Hehe...
      • mayhem
Freso: yes, I would like to be in charge of GSoC this year.
      • dboys_ has quit
      • iliekcomputers
alastairp: ping. If you get free time, would you mind reviewing my PRs to listenbrainz? :)
      • Sp4rrowh4wk: That will be of use to me some day in the future, I'm sure :)
      • CatQuest
Sp4rrowh4wk: did you say perl?musicbrainzserver is (still?) written i nperl, afaik
      • jcazevedo has quit
      • also loi haskell :D
      • Sp4rrowh4wk
iliekcomputers: well if you're taking it like that, I can't help but recommending EPFL - we absolutely *rock* (and have quite a few indians around)
      • CatQuest: my perl is not very good yet as I've been twiddling around as a side project this semester
      • but yeah, and haskell well.. FP is the (second) love of my life <3
      • iliekcomputers
I have messed around with haskell some
      • Sp4rrowh4wk
All the webapps of my society (FOSS on campus) are written in yesod
      • iliekcomputers
        It is pretty fun
      • CatQuest
(initially) bookbrainz,or the first iteration of it, was (supposed?) to be written in haskell
      • Sp4rrowh4wk
yeah I read that in the about page
      • CatQuest
or have we actually gone fll cirlce on that and gone backto haskell? LordSputnik
      • Leo_Verto
        not yet, I think :P
      • CatQuest
we went through several diff languages
      • what is it now?
      • Sp4rrowh4wk
there seemed to be an indication that the editing backend was in haskell or smthg
      • CatQuest
        stil phyton?
      • Leo_Verto
        BB's moving to full JS
      • CatQuest
erh python. yes moving to full js
      • i dunno. javascript man, it can be.. well i like ajax (but still)
      • Sp4rrowh4wk
        ... well...
      • like I said, I like FP so js and python are both languages I have a bit of trouble with... too unpredictable ^^
      • CatQuest
        what is fp?
      • Sp4rrowh4wk
I like to be able to prove my programs
      • functional programming
      • Leo_Verto
        floating points?
      • ah
      • CatQuest
        aha
      • iliekcomputers
        CatQuest: functional programming
