inside a JSON serializer method (in particular, MusicBrainz::Server::WebService::Serializer::JSON::2::Role::serialize()), do I have any means of knowing what the "outer" entity type is? I can tell which entity is being serialized, and whether it's top-level, but that seems to be it.

for MBS-9129, it looks like I need to make it so that that method will serialize an RG's ratings when either top-level or pulled in from a release request; I don't currently see how I can detect the latter.
well, this is still quite current: A second problem we found was that sometimes the actual, true positive result retrieved by the Lucenebased MusicBrainz search server was not the one in the first position or the one with the highest score.
