        Hi!
      • nikunj_
I want to apply foe GSoc and I am a newbie on Git
      • for*
      • any suggestions?
      • ruaok
      • Leo_Verto
as for git, I can really recommend this free online book https://git-scm.com/book/en/v2
      • nikunj_
I don't have any experience in development
      • I have only done competitive programming till now
      • And I am not getting clue where to start from
      • ruaok
the getting started page is not a clue where to get started from?
      • nikunj_
No I mean I am not able to figure out how to implement my programming knowledge to contribute on github

        Hello folks
      • SothoTalKer
        look who is back
      • pingupingu
as per my discussion yesterday, running ./script/compile_resources.sh before npm install messes up the css/js/web interface. any pointers on how I can generate them (ui) correctly?
      • hey SothoTalKer
      • SothoTalKer
        it's me XD
      • Freso
nikunj_: Did you read the getting started page?
      • pingupingu
I have tried npm install; compile_resources.sh again but no dice.. it is not generating the css/js files, bitmap any pointers?
      • Freso
pingupingu: FWIW, https://chatlogs.metabrainz.org/brainzbot/metab... - but it might not be of interest after all. And Quesito might have already linked you. :)
      • pingupingu
ahh yes Freso Quesito said he has already linked me :)
      • SothoTalKer
        she
      • Freso
👍 (And Quesito is a she.)
      • pingupingu
ohh right :) but I don't believe I got an email communication from her
      • SothoTalKer
        ohh, is someone slacking? XD
      • ruaok
        SothoTalKer: not slacking, no.
      • Freso
        Only you, SothoTalKer.
      • pingupingu
Freso, yeah we were planning to use echo nest before spotify
      • nikunj_
        Fresco: I did
      • pingupingu
Freso, I saw this in the chat logs: "Freso
      • Having MBIDs for that data that does exist in MB does mean better interoperability with a lot of other stuff."
      • how is it possible to get MBID's for data that does not exist in MB? this would be interesting indeed
      • Freso
pingupingu: You can add them to MB and they'll get MBIDs. :)
      • pingupingu
        ah right :)
      • Freso
With added emphasis: "Having MBIDs for that data that *does* exist in MB"
      • pingupingu
the search server took a good 6-8hours to populate the indices
      • btw.. I remember you can run musicbrainz in non-debug mode.. but I dont seem to remember that option, any quick pointers?
      • Freso
Isn't there an option like DEBUGMODE or some such?
      • Freso looks
      • Leo_Verto
nikunj_, so what you are saying is, you have experience in algorithms but not development?
      • pingupingu
ohh how did that page escape me! thanks Freso
      • Quesito
hi pingupingu! I had just sent you an email! welcome back! ;)
      • Freso
        pingupingu: Np. ;)
      • SothoTalKer
        Freso: i'm allowed to
      • pingupingu
seems everything is up to stuff.. just need to sort out the javascript/css generation and I can be on my way to test matching performance again :)

        Leo_Verto : exactly
      • Leo_Verto : Can you suggest me where to start from
      • pingupingu
Oh Hi Quesito too lazy to open up my email now lol
      • CallerNo6
nikunj_, if Development/Summer_of_Code/Getting_started isn't enough to help you get started, please re-read the last two sentences :-)
      • Freso
        !m CallerNo6
      • BrainzBot
        You're doing good work, CallerNo6!
      • CallerNo6 admits that at the beginning, it's hard to figure out how to ask the right question(s)l.
      • nikunj_
i just want to know how to switch to development from algo
      • I have no problem understanding getting started page
      • SothoTalKer
you create a github account, fork a project and edit the code so that it does the things you want
      • samj1912 has quit
      • nikunj_
can anyone suggest some projects which would have some easy issues in which I can contribute
      • CallerNo6
nikunj_, do you mean specifically MetaBrainz projects?
      • nikunj_
Yes , I have good experience in python so I was particularly thinking of ListenBrainz
      • But the problem is I am not able to understand the issues
      • Freso
nikunj_: Note that the "getting started" page specifically lists some non-development/code things to do before actually starting to code.
      • Leo_Verto
you should probably start by contributing data to MusicBrainz, seeing as most of the other projects are related to it in some way or another
      • Freso
CallerNo6: Maybe the "Get involved" section should go before the "Get inspired" one?
      • Since the "Get inspired" part asks them to look for tickets for software they may not be familiar with until they "Get involved"?
      • arbenina_ joined the channel
      • CatQuest has quit
      • CallerNo6
Freso, yeah, I went back and forth on that. "Get involved" kinda depends on which project(s) you're interested in.
      • Freso
Well, unless you're doing something on with BookBrainz you need to deal with MBIDs and MB data.
      • So you need to understand at some level what the different entities are.

CallerNo6: right, I have a small comment on the AB ideas page that the tickets may be confusing and people should come in and ask questions
      • Perhaps we can make that clearer
      • I was trying to make sure that my good first bug tickets have a good description of how to start
      • samj1912
Freso: can I add the GSoC get started link to the topic?
      • Freso
WP:BB! (But the topic is a bit crowded already. :/)
      • alastairp
Theoretically people should come here *from* the getting started page :)
      • Freso
Well, I guess it's not too bad right now.

      • Freso
        samj1912: He doesn't. It's a cloak.
      • samj1912 looks up cloaks
      • SothoTalKer
how is the MBID calculated? the wiki gave me nothing on this
      • Freso
        SothoTalKer: It's a UUID.
