it looks like it might be the &artist=nnn that breaks the Attach CD TOC. If I add &artist=123 to your baroque list (I'd have added Gemiani, but it looks like it wants the internal ID, which is not exposed by the UI), I get Cliff Richard albums with the greyed tracklists
      • reosarevok
CatQuest: Naxos tends to have 73 and 489 barcodes, but I hadn't seen them in the same one yet
      • CatQuest
bought in norway, likly in 93-94 so
      • might just be an original german and then given a sticker because "external market has that barcode"
      • hm.. the other naxos release i have just here has the german barcode too
      • (no sticker)
      • releated ish: is there any diff between https://beta.musicbrainz.org/release/3b80436d-f... https://beta.musicbrainz.org/release/feb2586e-4... other than the country? :/
      • hmm

      • Zastai: huh ao it's the artist parameer.. thats odd indeed, and a bug
      • (I hadn't noticed that since I tend to search on album names usually (worls for both VA and SA :)))
      • works*
      • Zastai
correlation is not causation, but it does seem related :)
      • CatQuest
it's the difference between the working and non working urls, so yea

hey when editing the database, am i allowed to remove those greatest hits and confusing albums?
      • CatQuest
ahh the other two have two disc ids
      • what? no
      • of course not
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
        but why?
      • CatQuest
        uhm. becasue they excist?
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
but wouldnt it make sense for the songs to be sorted according to the actual info?
      • CatQuest
        ....
      • they are. they are released on both alcums and compilations
      • singles and ep's
      • albums*
      • that *is* the actual info
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
        im not sure im following
      • CatQuest
fiar enough you want no album tags in your files, that's your decission, but you can't edit mb and remove data becasue it fits you tagging
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
no i dont mean it like that
      • CatQuest
        ah ok
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
what i mean to say is
      • CatQuest
        explain what you mean :)
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
if there is a recording, with a specific release from the artist, shouldnt it be removed from the greatest hits and other albums?
      • CatQuest
        no, not at all
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
        why not?
      • CatQuest
quite the contrary. we work hard ot merge recordings that are the smae
      • becasue it's the same song?
      • variants, like mixes or such should have their own recording
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
okay lemme find an example real quick
      • CatQuest
severla reasons: we are a music dat base first a tagging platform 3rd (what is 2? woh knows)
      • there are *others* (me ofr example) that *want* to tag things liek compilations
      • since that's the ting we have
      • here wht i am playing right now is a rought guide to world music for children
      • a compilation
      • if ther recordings went to the original release it would al lbe garbled for me
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
but shouldnt the goal of musicbranz to ensure the music metadata is as accurate as possible?
      • CatQuest
        exactly
      • UmkaDK has quit
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
yeah so when i see something like may it be by enya
      • CatQuest
if you have many stand alone random tracks you can do some %unset(releasename)
      • arbenina has quit
      • and then the album name wont get saved fo you on that
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
okay let me find another album based example
      • CatQuest
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
i know just let me talk...please
      • you have merry christmas happy holidays by nsync
      • which is officially in the home for the holidays album
      • CatQuest
no i dont actually, but ok
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
        you get what i mean
      • CatQuest
        sure
      • and thne it's on tons of compilations too
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
but the first priority, the very first album it picks is some compilation
      • which is not the official album and thus not accurate
      • CatQuest
so if you have the releases ou can tag per release. if you only have the track and want the album name yo uhave to find that nad fetch it inot picard
      • Zastai
there is no priority in the recording-album relationship
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
so albums are picked at random?
      • CatQuest
you can paste the release-url into the picard search field to auto laod it
      • Zastai
so the order is effectively arbitrary. sure, it may make sense to show non-VA first, but even then you might not get the "best" match first
      • reosarevok
You should be able to use the option to prioritise albums in the Picard settings to do exactly that
      • But I haven't tested it, since I only tag full albums anyway
      • CatQuest
pick how? by sanning, serachig on musicbrainz, metadata search witin picard?
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
i do scan since thats the most accurate
      • Zastai
for example, for a track released as a single, is the "best" match the single or the album?
      • CatQuest
qould be that the compilation is the only one with that finger print then
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
Zastai, it would be single, since we're aiming for accuracy here
      • CatQuest
        eh.
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
        right?
      • Zastai
even if the single was released after the album?
      • CatQuest
        exactly
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
        in that case no
      • CatQuest
there are too many corner cases
      • Zastai
compilations are often ever-so-slightly dj-mixed, which can throw off the fingerprints
      • CatQuest
uh I definitly don't agree with that
      • they can be yea. migt be the fiel yo uhave actulaly *came* fro mthat compilation originally :O
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
what i want to know is, why cant the musicbrainz database prioritize albums and other data that is official
      • reosarevok
        Why would it?
      • I want to tag my music with the source it came from
      • CatQuest
picard can be set to do just that i belive
      • +1 reosarevok
      • reosarevok
If I rip a compilation album, why would I want it to be set to an album?
      • CatQuest
i have *both a n album and a release wich is a compilaion
      • soem overlap tracks. si wnat the originals liek reo said
      • reosarevok
But as I said, there's some setting for avoiding compilations if possible
      • CatQuest
        yes
      • reosarevok
Not sure how well it works with scan, but
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
it seems like these stuff should be defaults
      • CatQuest
it would be very useful to know where the file came from. randomly downloaded files are notioriously difficult ot precicely say are so and suh official version
      • Zastai
tagging actual compilation rips of non-niche music can be annoying, because for a 40-track compilation, scan will often throw up 30+ different matches
      • CatQuest
(great way to find unexpected covers toh :D)
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
im not saying to ditch compilation all together
      • cuz that throwing out the baby with the bathwatere
      • CatQuest
x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ: well yea, for you. but not for others.. it's not easy to know everyones prefrences at the same time :D
      • reosarevok
x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ: why would it be the default? It's what you want, but I don't think that's what most people want. I'd expect most people want to tag with the release they got the info from
      • CatQuest
picard is awesome but ont psycic :D
      • Zastai
anyway, I'm off - the sofa beckons
      • CatQuest
        bye zastai!
      • reosarevok
If you only have tracks and not albums, then I guess I could see why you'd do the way you want, for example, but for me that's such a weird way of listening to music :)
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
what im saying, is if there is an official set of metadata straight from the artists mouth, why would picard prioritize some random compilation made by some random user?
      • CatQuest
        i do both actually
      • becasue that fiel you have might litterally *be* fro mthat compilation
      • SothoTalker_
        now that's a picard problem
      • reosarevok
x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ: the compilations aren't made by some users - they're (almost all) official compilations released officially
      • CatQuest
and yes, that's a tagger issue, not a database issue
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
        *sigh*
      • reosarevok
In fact, we don't allow home-made compilations
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
        could have fooled me
      • reosarevok
As I said, Picard should be able to do what you want
      • CatQuest
unless they have enough distribution to be cosidered "bootleg release"
      • reosarevok
It just won't be made the default, because it's what you want, but not what most of our users seem to want
      • CatQuest
but those shouldn't be defualt at all
      • SothoTalker_
i can understand the point of x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
      • CatQuest
i cna too. i na way
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
        its not what i want
      • reosarevok
We've had people ask about compilation issues before. Have you tried what I mentioned and changed the preferred release slider to reject compilations?
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
its what you guys should be doing according to your goals of accuracy
      • reosarevok
        It should help
      • CatQuest
        x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ: now that's a bit bastant
      • reosarevok
... our goal is data accuracy. The data is there, accurately
      • CatQuest
        indeed
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
        what???
      • reosarevok
That you don't like it doesn't make it inaccurate: compilations are released all the time (and sell a lot of copies!)
      • CatQuest
        and soem are awesome!
      • reosarevok
Scans look at the music content of your file. It knows what music it is, but can't magically know where you got it from
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
you mean to tell me, if i made a compilation of songs and change whatever i want, and give that to my friend, my choices override that of the artists?
      • reosarevok
x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ: no, but if Sony releases a compilation album, that's pretty official
      • x3YTjJV6asPhskrZ
        yeah
      • exactly
