well, a few of us are on IRCcloud, which already gives us nice features, but we pay for each person.

I'll probably leave this for someone else to complain about before thinking about creating more work.

It's possible to get a cleaner Matrix<->IRC integration by connecting a bot from Riot, instead of using the Freenode gateway bridged hosted by matrix.org

Freenode is nicely bridged to Matrix :)

If there was an interest, I could help facilitate that for #metabrainz. It wouldn't change anything on IRC, but it would enable more advanced features for MAtrix/Riot users

FWIW, as freenode staff, the Matrix people do not seem to have such a good grasp of their IRC bridging as some users of their service claims/thinks, but I don’t know enough about the technical details about it.

I do know that other freenode staffers who are closer to the metal relatively commonly complain about issues with Matrix people.

as far as it goes, https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-ircd (an "ircd" which is just a protocol bridge to turn an irc client into a matrix client) seems like a much better option than attempting to do two-way synchronization between two very different protocols that both have state.
