ruaok, zas: would it be possible to upgrade the wiki.musicbrainz VM to a newer OS version? it's on xenial now, which has PHP 7.0. if we could go to focal with 7.4, that would be ideal.

      • legoktm
        that works too :)

iliekcomputers: Hi, I think I found a way to make the daily activity query faster
      • Can you have a look at the sql query plan once
      • I found this online service which provide a notebook like environment for spark
      • It's pretty cool, we can even get the plots directly inline
      • Also I am talking about the query plan for `result_without_zero_hours.explain()`
      • the second step is not necessary, it's just filling in the hours which have 0 listens
      • ballenby has quit
      • v6lur joined the channel
      • iliekcomputers
Truncate the listened_at to get the hour and then an equality check. Hmm. The explain seems reasonable.

ishaanshah: you will soon be able to run pyspark in jupyter notebooks
      • Not exactly jupyter notebook but a similar environment based on it
      • ruaok
wow, the linked in UI is freaking terrible. it keeps getting worse and worse.
      • ruaok should close his account
      • shivam-kapila

      • reosarevok
Is there an actual point to LinkedIn? I always assumed it was a place for career people to show off
      • Also, ruaok: https://tickets.metabrainz.org/browse/MBS-10967 - I think it makes sense, but it's probably going to be seen as a political statement by some, so making sure you're ok with me implementing this? :)
      • BrainzBot
MBS-10967: Add Kosovo to the list of release countries
      • iliekcomputers
        reosarevok: yeah, that and recruiters
      • reosarevok
(it only recently got marked as a country at all in MB due to that same issue)
      • ruaok
        reosarevok: I'm ok with that.
      • ruaok is always in favor of small countries
      • wow, the latest merge of master into timescale-final had zero merge conflicts.
      • reosarevok
        Ok, thanks!
      • shivam-kapila
reosarevok: LinkedIn sometimes helps connecting with good people and those good people share good resources. Might help in getting referrals too
      • reosarevok
Is referral that thing where someone tells "they are a good worker and stuff" when you apply for some other company?
      • reosarevok knows so little about how the real capitalist world operates :p
      • shivam-kapila
        Yes its quite the same
      • But I totally agree people show off a lot on it
      • People were showing off Arctic Code Vault Contributor batch. I guess almost everyone got it. Whats the point in show off
      • ruaok
unless I missed a notifcation, I wasn't included on the code vault... I guess I dont have enough code up there. :)
      • MajorLurker joined the channel
      • reosarevok
I never even heard of the vault thing :D
      • _lucifer
i do not understand the point of code vault
      • it mostly seems to be for pr purposes
      • shivam-kapila
ruaok: I guess everyone who contributed befor feb 2020 got it
      • _lucifer: No
      • Github just put a backup of all the code on it till feb 2020 into the code vault so that in case their DB gets destroyed at any moment the copy till feb 2020 is safe for generations to com
      • _lucifer
yeah i understand that but how would that work out
      • they are storing it on film reels
      • how will they regenerate the repos from it
      • alastairp
        good morning
      • shivam-kapila
ruaok: you have that badge on your profile
      • See highlights section
      • _lucifer: the same way they stored it. Lol
      • _lucifer
the svalbard seed bank (from which they inspired the arctic code vault) truly makes sense but the code vault doesn't

      • i checked their website they will provide a guide on how the data could be recovered so ok
      • but its more of a time capsule
      • PROJECT SILICA is even more ambitious
      • they are planning to store data in quartz crystals using lasers for 10000 years
      • shivam-kapila
        Thats awesome
      • ruaok
        > they are planning to store data in quartz crystals using lasers for 10000 years
      • yeah, and whoever tries to read that will get some crypting "DLL not found" error.
      • Mr_Monkey
Who's got a working minidisk player at home?
      • shivam-kapila
        You mean CD player?
      • Mr_Monkey
I always find long-term technological promises are highly optimistic
      • ruaok
        shivam-kapila: ahh, thanks. that's what I missed.
      • shivam-kapila
        You're welcome :)
      • ballenby
The only people that owned functioning mini disc players and readers were bad guys with nefarious plans on said discs in Sony movies.
      • Mr_Monkey
No, I mean minidisk, but I guess that's my point :) Technology evolves too fast for us to remember formats from 20 years ago, so how the hell do they think we'll be able to read any technology in 10000 years?
      • _lucifer
        right, Mr_Monkey
      • shivam-kapila
Those will be kept in museums.
      • _lucifer
it is merely for historical and cultural purposes
      • ruaok
heck, who has a working zune subscription?
      • shivam-kapila
        Like the cave engravings?
      • _lucifer
        yeah
      • Mr_Monkey

      • ishaanshah
