      • bitmap, reosarevok: the two latest releases have been skipped because there were not enough changes so far
      • alastairp
        hi there
      • ruaok: when you're at a computer and have a few minutes to talk can you ping me?
      • ruaok
        ping
      • alastairp
        hi
      • I spoke with yvanzo a while back about applying security updates on critiquebrainz. I did a bit of that last week, but in the process found quite a few bugs that appear to be released live
      • I remember you mentioning that we should have a think about CB's immediate future given how many developers we have
      • ruaok is open to suggestions.
      • so just wanted to hear your thoughts on what you think is the right way forward
      • ruaok
I'm increasingly in favor of mothballing it for the time being.
      • alastairp
in terms of fixing the biggest things that I saw, it's probably a week of work or less
      • ruaok
we've tried to get more people interested in it, but no luck.
      • alastairp
for you is mothballing shutting it down for good? putting it into read-only?
      • I mean, if it _has_ to be done, I can take a week to do it, it just depends if we think that it's worth my time
      • ruaok
it is simply not part of our core competencies at the moment.
      • read-only will still need some maintenance, I suppose.
      • alastairp
        yeah, exactly
      • it's also worth pointing out that people are actively using it
      • perhaps slowly, but there are reviews for the last week on it
      • but it's true that keeping it running still required moderators, etc
      • ruaok
I guess one thing we could do is put up a post on community saying that if anyone cares about the project and would be interesting in being a care-taker, they should speak up.
      • alastairp
in a moderator capacity, or a coder capacity?
      • keeping in mind that coding will still require one of us to do basic code review, and releases
      • ruaok
        mainainer capacity first and foremost.
      • but I agree, that no one on our team really wants to spend time on that.
      • alastairp
OK. I'll release these security updates then, and I can draft a community post. do you want to see it before I post it?
      • ruaok
sure, that would be nice. thanks for taking this on.
      • yvanzo
        thanks alastairp
      • ruaok
and perhaps you can frame it in a more open way than how we d=just discussed it. rather than leaning towards a solution, state the problem and what resources are needed for the project in the short term.
      • alastairp
        right, ok
      • iliekcomputers: ping, when you're around. I want to understand what is on CB beta and what is on CB prod
      • ruaok
        yaaay!
      • I'm still working to finish many loose ends before diving into troi coding for reals...
      • alastairp
ruaok: oh, btw, we would love to try your water fixer
      • water the last few weeks has been really soso
      • shivam-kapila
        Hey! morning!
      • v6lur joined the channel
      • ruaok
ok, easy. at the farmacia, buy Sal de Magnesio (Mg2Cl) NOT epsom salts MgSO4 (or whatever it is)
      • then you'll need table salt or iodized table salt.
      • 100g of Mg2Cl and 50g of salt to 1L of water.
      • then 5ml to 500ml of water. (that's a teaspoon measure)
      • I'm curious to see how it goes for you. you'd be the first younger people it works for. It seems to be a problem for 40+ people.
      • moin moin, shivam-kapila
      • shivam-kapila
        👋
      • ruaok
I was up in the north north north of germany (5km to the danish border) yesterday and near the dykes by the sea every one greets everyone with "moin!". There is no other greeting. Only moin.
      • shivam-kapila
        Wow
      • ruaok
and, I finally learned the real meaning of moin. It was confimed it has nothing to do with morning at all.
      • shivam-kapila
        Lol. Seriously
      • ruaok
Moin! is a greeting that wishes you good wind for sailing.
      • alastairp
mmm, ok. only sodium and magnesium?
      • I started drinking vichy after bike rides as a general salt replacement
      • ruaok
the north are very much seafarers, so good wind is critical to trade and all that.
      • alastairp: yes only those two.
      • alastairp: for me vichy, makes things worse.
      • alastairp
        oh? interesting. no problem here
      • shivam-kapila
        TILT
      • alastairp
I also have salt pills that have magnesium, sodium, calcium and potassium too
      • ruaok
yes, it has salt, bit it is very high in calcium, which makes you flush out magnesium.
      • alastairp
right, I didn't know of that interaction
      • ruaok
(mg/ca, K and Na must all be in a very tight balance in your body for you to not die)
      • so if you area lacking one, it will flush the other to establish the balance.
      • drinking vichy made me more thirsty.
      • and that is one of the reasons for salt in the fixer.
      • in the winter, you can cut the salt in half, but that might affect the taste... it may become bitter.
      • alastairp
so the salt is so that the body retains the additional magnesium instead of flushing it?
      • ruaok
actually no, I didn't express that well.
      • the salt is there for 1) making the magnesium palatable 2) providing salt lost during summer months.
      • Vichy would work fine if I could add more Mg to it... hmmm.
      • alastairp
        ah, got it
      • well, thanks for the chemistry lesson
      • ruaok
        np
      • shivam-kapila
Table salt also has some Mg
      • alastairp
some, yes, but note that the recipe above has 2x the amount of Mg2Cl than NaCl
      • and I also suspect that it might differ in different places. for example you can get magnesium salt, or potassium salt, as a way of minimising the amount of sodium that you take, too
      • someone told me that at least in spain, salt is required to come with iodine, so people who sell "iodised salt" for more money are just scamming you, because the other one has it anyway
      • anyway, I'm not an expert in this. we'll see
      • Gazooo has quit
      • ruaok
        > salt is required to come with iodine
      • interesting -- but its not listed on the ingredients. must be below the reporting threshold.
      • > Table salt also has some Mg
      • can't be more than trace amounts.
      • alastairp
ruaok: yeah, when he told me that I explicitly went and looked as well, so I'm not sure. he said some other suspect things as well, so for all I know he was making it up

yvanzo, bitmap: Hmm. We really should try to avoid dropping more than one release in a row, even if they are very small, IMO
      • It's good to keep the habit :)
      • yvanzo

_lucifer: I think you can compare the character with that character changed to uppercase (`myCharacter.toUpperCase()`), and compare if they're the same.
      • Not the cleanest…
      • ruaok
pristine___: I'm loving seeing the ratings in your latest PR. But, its already slipped my mind: what is the range of ratings again?
      • iliekcomputers
        diru1100: Happy Raksha Bandhan!
      • diru1100
      • pristine___
ruaok: I am not really sure about the range since I couldn't find it in the official doc but from my experience I can say it is 1 > rating > -1
      • ruaok
        ok, then let's do this:
      • 1. scale the rating to [0.0, 1.0].
      • 2. If after the scaling the rating is >1.0 or < 0.0, for any value during a run, issue one single sentry alert that we had range issues.
      • 3. clip the results so that any value greater than 1.0 becomes 1 and any value smaller than 0 becomes 0.
