        ruaok_: :)
      • ruaok_
the thing that was a massive game changer re BigQuery was that public data sets are hosted FOR FREE
      • querying the data costs, but everyone gets 5TB/month free.
      • for size of our "small potatoes" data, that could be a decent amount
      • but the best part of that we dont have to setep our own hadoop cluster.
      • and with maybe 20 lines of python we can stream LB data straight to bigquery.
      • and then everyone and anyone can start writing queries and use google scale stuff.
      • this is super exciting, really.
      • because it allows us to grow out "small potatoes big data" projects faster than having to install our own stuff.
      • *our
      • so, super excited.
      • also way over socialized and I have nothing but socializing to do for the next 3 days.
      • what could go wrong. :)
      • fin!
      • Freso
        Neat.
      • Leftmost, go.
      • Leftmost
I've been working on sorting out the edit search speed stuff and doing due diligence on partitioning.
      • Freso
(bitmap didn't clock in yet, right?)
      • Leftmost
Sadly, it looks like partitioning won't get us much benefit, as we can't guarantee that any given query will only be looking at some subset of partitions, which is where the biggest performance benefits come in.
      • ruaok_ hasn't heard from bitmap to day
      • regagain has quit
      • There's something small to be gained in terms of physical proximity, but that doesn't seem to be applicable, since everything is stored in roughly the same order it's created.
      • From talking to #postgresql, though, physical proximity is our issue, just not one I have an immediate solution for.
      • Freso
        And neither do they?
      • Leftmost
No, but I'm keeping an ongoing dialogue with them to try to get it worked out.
      • Freso
        Cool.
      • Leftmost
I've been able to get some improvement in query speed for collection edits, but it's going to be a process.
      • That's it for me.
      • Freso
        alastairp? bitmap? LordSputnik? Anyone else?
      • Guess not then.
      • Onwards!
      • reosarevok!
      • Enough with the house cleaning, you're in a meeting.
      • reosarevok
        :p
      • Freso
The mess will still be there afterwards.
      • reosarevok
(they're showing the house tomorrow morning hence making sure it's showable! :p)
      • So
      • TOPIC: MetaBrainz Community and Development channel | MusicBrainz non-development: #musicbrainz | MeB meeting agenda: CAA-84 requirements (reo), data quality icons (reo)
      • And I was like "huh yeah I should find out if we can work on that or not"
      • (that is, whether we need IA time or just MB time)
      • ruaok_ mentioned earlier that it could just be MB time, depending on how we want to do it
      • So we should think about what we want from this
      • "<ruaok> If we make it another type in case, then cake."
      • Can it fit inside CAA or does it need to be a different project?
      • zas
        Leftmost: 64MB
      • Leftmost
        Thanks.
      • reosarevok
CallerNo6 mentioned that posters and the like are more likely to be something designers complain about than cover art, since they are sold separately sometimes
      • So we should make sure with the IA they're also fine with us throwing that at them
      • But apart from that, does "add event to the CAA" seem reasonable as a way to do this?
      • Freso
I feel like they should be their own project. Maybe ping the IA and hear how long a wait that would likely entail?
      • reosarevok
Or do people think we need to do something fancier?
      • Freso
I think it's fine to bundle it with CAA, but maybe not go to the same image repository?
      • I don't know.
      • reosarevok
Ok, so get in touch with the IA and check on the idea first. Seems reasonable
      • Freso
        !next?
      • reosarevok
Since I kinda have the contacts (even though I haven't talked to anyone there in a year or so, hope they're still on that skype chat...) I guess I can add that to my list of tasks
      • I guess next!
      • Freso
        !next
      • reosarevok!
      • Enough with the house cleaning, you're in a meeting.
      • :U
      • TOPIC: MetaBrainz Community and Development channel | MusicBrainz non-development: #musicbrainz | MeB meeting agenda: data quality icons (reo)
      • reosarevok
        :D
      • reosarevok slaps Freso with a carrot
      • Anyway
      • I was thinking I really want a way to see what I have properly cleaned up and what I still need to fix when looking at a composer
      • That takes me back to data quality (which, I know, nobody is using right now)
      • I was thinking: if I could look at a release list and see a small happy face (or something) by the ones that have been fixed properly, and maybe a sad face (or something else) by the ones which we know suck ass, that'd make it easier
      • (and data quality actually showing somewhere useful might even make other people use it)
      • Then I heard that someone wanted things teenagers could do
      • So I thought maybe teenagers could design us some icons and then we could show them like that :p
      • Does that sound like annoying clutter to others?
      • Freso
        GCI task?
      • reosarevok
Or like something that might make sense?
      • Yes I didn't mean just random teenagers off the street, Freso :p
      • Sorry, I'll be more obvious next time :p
      • Freso
        That'd've been fun though.
      • reosarevok
        Twitch Designs MusicBrainz Logos
      • (no)
      • Anyway. Basically my main question is "will anyone shout if we show more icons?"
      • (I guess "if yes, can we make it a preference and still add icons?" :p
      • )
      • Freso won't, but someone probably will
      • When checking if there was a ticket for this I found several other icon-related tickets that might fit GCI, btw
      • CallerNo6
you can always turn them off in css, can't you?
      • reosarevok
We can take a quick look after the meeting
      • CallerNo6: probably but I'd rather have a real option if more than one or two people hate them :)
      • CallerNo6
sure. so maybe something like an MBUI userscript?
      • reosarevok
You mean to show them or to not show them?
      • CallerNo6 will shut up now and try to think it through
      • Ok. I'll add a ticket for it, but you can comment on it and be like NOPE. if you hate it :p
      • ruaok_
oh, quick OT: The birth certificate I requested for Taio Cruz was not found. which suggests that the birth certificate sent to us was a fake.
      • reosarevok
        :D
      • Really?
      • CallerNo6
        lol
      • ruaok_
I provided the details as given on the birth cert to her majesty's gubmint and asked for a copy.
      • 404
      • so, *something* is wrong with that.
      • Freso
        So next step?
      • Sending it to the popo?
      • ruaok_
blog post. comment on wikipedia talk page.
      • send to met police.
      • Freso
        Nice.
      • CallerNo6
        haha. don't mess with archivists.
      • Freso
(Better the met police than the meth police, I guess.)
      • ruaok_
        lol to both. :)
      • zas
        ;)
      • ruaok_
CallerNo6: seriously, this pisses me off.
      • ok, time to run.
      • will still be available on mobile
      • ruaok_ has quit
      • Freso
        Adeus!
      • chirlu` wonders who Taio Cruz is or pretends to be.
      • Also, I think that about wraps up the meeting.
      • Thanks for not throwing too many carrots around!
      • </BANG>
      • Leftmost throws a parsnip at Freso.

      • CallerNo6
oh, so reosarevok: I'm going to make a ticket about "user edited" cover art. file it under style or caa?
      • reosarevok
        New types? Style
      • Leftmost
I'm with chirlu`. What's this whole Taio Cruz thingymajig?
      • reosarevok
Someone who writes like a fancypants lawyer wrote to us
      • chirlu`
      • reosarevok
Saying "we have the wrong legal name for Taio Cruz and it's actually this"
      • http://tickets.musicbrainz.org/browse/MBS-8625 is the ticket for data quality icons BTW - happy to get comments for/against/about it
      • CallerNo6
      • Leftmost
        Oy.
      • Freso
ruaok: You really should just go and request getting your WP username changed to RobKaye, ruaok, Mayhem(BCN), or whatever...
      • ruaok
Yeah, will do before following up.
      • Will also talk to wm people about this taio biz.
      • regagain joined the channel
      • reosarevok
Freso: I'm adding some icon-related MBS tickets to your page
      • Please take a look afterwards and see if you agree they could fit
      • Leftmost
People get into arguments over the weirdest things.
      • ruaok
        Oh! I forgot.
      • We can skip using layer.
      • Xmpp will do all we need. Fully open source.
      • And arc Riley, and xmpp fan is helping us.
      • *an
      • Leftmost
        Ooh, XMPP.
      • ruaok
Gentlecat: so, we need to review the tickets related to mbs-1801
      • chirlu`
Leftmost: I donÂ’t think the edit search performance issue in the general case can be solved as long as the planner does dumb things, such as assign a selectivity of 0.5 to IN clauses, and wonÂ’t take hints.
      • Gentlecat
        ruaok: ok
      • chirlu`
(Hints to override the default selectivity.)
      • Gentlecat
how is this going to work?
      • Freso
        XMPP = <3
      • Freso has been touting XMPP for in-site messaging a couple of times now - not disappointed it it becomes so :)
