ruaok: i asked about memcached (cartman), it is used by web servers, we need to warm up another cache to prevent performance impact if we want to move it, so i did few researchs about it, and i think using https://github.com/facebook/mcrouter could be a good thing. Basically it is a proxy/router for memcached instances, and it would allow
2015-12-10 34439, 2015
zas
replication/sharding/failover. Did you already think about such thing ?
2015-12-10 34419, 2015
ruaok
Our use of menmcached isn't so amazing that this would be terrible on us.
2015-12-10 34452, 2015
ruaok
I would suggest making the swap during our low period.
2015-12-10 34418, 2015
ruaok
Rewarming mencached will not exceed our load during peak times.
2015-12-10 34448, 2015
zas
ok. Still mcrouter could be something to set up in the middle term to provide failover and scalability.
2015-12-10 34459, 2015
zas
i keep a note about it
2015-12-10 34424, 2015
zas
i'll install a memcached instance on jiji, i already added a dns name for it and bitmap made the changes to web servers, so once it is installed i can just change the dns config (ttl=1 hour)
search servers are stable, i fixed an issue with the restart delay, in normal conditions they should'nt crash anymore (but there is still an issue when both are restarted at the same time)
2015-12-10 34441, 2015
zas
during your stay, we'll upgrade dora, roobarb, cartman to 14.04
2015-12-10 34408, 2015
ruaok
What time of day shall we do that?
2015-12-10 34421, 2015
zas
roobarb/dora have to be done during the low period ideally. We need to dist upgrade and deploy new search servers using cookbooks
2015-12-10 34427, 2015
ruaok
Only tomorrow is a possible timeframe.
2015-12-10 34457, 2015
zas
cartman can be done once jiji is the memcached
2015-12-10 34423, 2015
zas
ok, so i plan things for tomorrow
2015-12-10 34438, 2015
darwin
(if mb ecosystem has non-persistent redis, consider retiring memcached if underused)
2015-12-10 34423, 2015
darwin
(substitute memory based redis "cache")
2015-12-10 34428, 2015
zas
darwin: yes, we (bitmap and me) evocated this
2015-12-10 34422, 2015
darwin
memcached is great, top 5 ever internet software, but.. is for a particular paradigm?
2015-12-10 34405, 2015
zas
bitmap will tell us soon if we can get rid of memcached and replace it by redis in our use
2015-12-10 34414, 2015
darwin
also, zas, you could warm your new memcached server by adding it to round robin dns
2015-12-10 34428, 2015
darwin
and having it take half of the traffic during slow time etc.
2015-12-10 34429, 2015
zas
yes, it will be a middle solution, less impacting performance, but not as good as a real warmup (where get requests will be honored, if key is availble on the warm cache)
2015-12-10 34459, 2015
zas
actually a good idea, it will half the performance impact over a pure cold start
2015-12-10 34416, 2015
zas
and simple to set up using tinydns
2015-12-10 34422, 2015
darwin
yeah, you pay the cache miss read-through penalty
2015-12-10 34433, 2015
darwin
but that's per-user, and it warms your cache, and they'll survive?
2015-12-10 34454, 2015
darwin
and memcache does not provide, afaik, an ability to dump/load dataset
2015-12-10 34456, 2015
zas
yes, ruaok said they'll survive a cold start during low hours
2015-12-10 34408, 2015
darwin
(redis you can turn a rdb into stuff, or use replication, or etc.)
2015-12-10 34414, 2015
zas
they are tools than can dump / restore data
2015-12-10 34426, 2015
darwin
well, and by definition, you'll be hitting the db with 1/2 low time traffic
2015-12-10 34443, 2015
darwin
which should be even more sustainable?
2015-12-10 34404, 2015
zas
yup, i'll give it a try
2015-12-10 34413, 2015
darwin
that said, if you do explicit invalidation, danger
2015-12-10 34444, 2015
zas
a cold start would invalidate all anyway
2015-12-10 34456, 2015
darwin
right but if your code actively invalidates
2015-12-10 34401, 2015
darwin
it can only invalidate 1/2 hosts
2015-12-10 34401, 2015
darwin
etc.
2015-12-10 34452, 2015
zas
i'll see with bitmap about this, when he'll be awaken ;)

Techtronix: Hello. Just ask your question (but feel free to ping mentors). There are plenty of people who may help you, even if they're not GCI mentors or designated as mentors on your specific task.
Techtronix: Also, just asking the question will allow your mentors to answer the question when they/we come around, instead of having to wait for to be around to to actually ask the question. It creates an unnecessary delay for you to get your answer. :)
