stanislas: I would prefer userscripts to an application. I believe that people are more likely to use userscripts on sites they commonly visit than download an application for importing data into BB
2016-01-27 02723, 2016
LordSputnik
Of course, that doesn't stop you making an application, but I would warn you that people probably won't use it (especially since the number of BB is still very low at the moment)

stanislas: A more useful Python project would be to create a BookBrainz python client library (like pymusicbrainzngs)
2016-01-27 02731, 2016
LordSputnik
Since that will inspire other people to make applications (and you'd be able to use it in your own applications too)
stanislas: have a twitter username I can mentioned in a tweet about our tests from the official BookBrainz twitter?

quick question... anyone know a reason why the slave.sh script wouldn't work through a cronjob but works fine when executing from console? i.e. run from console works fine, crontjob fails and creates files in / instead of the server home folder

LordSputnik: If I make an executable from this python code and I know that it is doable, I don't see why people would prefer using user scripts. The biggest disanvantage of user scripts is that they use information only from one website which significantly decreases the quality of data.
2016-01-27 02739, 2016
stanislas
I don't know how to install user script myself now (I know what is greasemonkey) but it isn't as easy as just clicking .exe. Everyone knows how to do that. Other options are creating a chrome extension or just a web app.

Well, our powerusers run userscripts all the time, and it's easy for them to go into the page they want to import and click import
2016-01-27 02720, 2016
reosarevok
That doesn't mean an executable is bad, as long as it runs in linux too :p
2016-01-27 02743, 2016

But I wouldn't expect an app to import one entry - while I might expect an app to add a whole catalogue

MonkeyDo: the goal for today, as I hazily see it, is to find a tweezer-like crowbar and insert some portions of the new design into the existing musicbrainz.org site.
2016-01-27 02705, 2016
ruaok
ideally to not change the actual structure of the site; change only the site framework and adapt the colors of the site.
2016-01-27 02723, 2016

and ideally create a PR for review by the end of the day.

LordSputnik | Of course, that doesn't stop you making an application, but I would warn you that people probably won't use it -- Ḯ'm not sure about that though. *Most* users probably wouldn't (but *most* MB users also don't use userscripts), but if the interface of it is good, I'd imagine it might make it easier to import stuff into BB than a userscript could.
2016-01-27 02704, 2016
Freso
But then again, BB's Web API is much more powerful than MB's (at least in that it actually allows editing), so maybe a userscript could be written to do a pretty amazing job.
