we're only accepting java because of SOLR/Lucene.

there's a possibility of me getting a uni position that would let me work on MB stuff as part of the job (still, merely a possibility....it's been floated)

I'll start working on the proposal tonight after this midterm....I have this idea of parsing musicxml data into a normalized (for key/tempo) into binary vectors for possible QBH...thought crowd sourcing (using "crowd" loosely) incipits in musicxml would be a good start....could move on to monophonic musical strings (related to works) down the road...
weeksio: one issue I could see with that is that our current works often represent a slightly generic thing
2016-03-21 08131, 2016

(especially for non-classical works, where a black metal cover is linked to the same work as the original pop song)

Yeah, I just mean that the notes played could vary in the cover and that might be weird for an incipit displaying notes
2016-03-21 08137, 2016
reosarevok
But maybe you don't mean score-style incipits :)
2016-03-21 08140, 2016
weeksio
it's like an arranged work....or an instance of a work

2016-03-21 08110, 2016

2016-03-21 08136, 2016
reosarevok
We do have separate works for arrangements now in classical
2016-03-21 08147, 2016
reosarevok
(at least for written-down, published arrangements)
2016-03-21 08123, 2016
reosarevok
I'd slightly prefer a "one work, many arrangements" system but that'd require yet another level for "arrangement" and people are usually confused enough by track - recording - work :p
2016-03-21 08128, 2016
reosarevok
(plus a good UI for that sounds hard)
2016-03-21 08140, 2016
reosarevok
I still think it'd work with a good UI, but...
2016-03-21 08107, 2016
weeksio
in library subject heading terms, you would have <composer> -> <work> -> and then...
2016-03-21 08148, 2016
weeksio
we tag on an "arranged" subheading
2016-03-21 08100, 2016
reosarevok
Yeah, I've seen some libraries do that :)
2016-03-21 08124, 2016
weeksio
then you would have albums that "contain a work"
2016-03-21 08127, 2016

Anyway, anything that makes MB more useful to libraries (and brings more classical cataloguing people to help me :p) is good

Give it a go, note other things that you feel need improving, throw some of them into the proposal as "once I'm done with this" :p
(one thing I'd look into for example, since you want to work with works anyway, are possible improvements to work display, both in the work's page and the composer's)
2016-03-21 08152, 2016
reosarevok
For example, https://musicbrainz.org/artist/b972f589-fb0e-474e… would be much less terrible if the pagination would be less strict and the movements for the works would get collapsed under the main work for display
2016-03-21 08118, 2016
weeksio
I better run...but I'll check the logs later
2016-03-21 08138, 2016

Except we can't always do that without further thought, because it probably makes more sense to display Beethoven's op. 10 as three entries even if they have op. 10 as the parent work :p
