CatQuest: Which is why I didn't want to cut off yvanz' topic just to squeeze the Discourse one in in the last few minutes, with not enough time to actually get it discussed.

Freso: sorry I wasn't about for the meeting. Probably won't be around for 3 weeks, but after that I should be consistently here :)

LordSputnik: As long as you're available for QuoraUK this week for their final eval and make your own final eval next week, I'm good.

hmm I just thought of something.. should Critique Brainz just be about music? should it not also maybe be a "repository for creative commons licensed music reviews" but maybe book (and ultimatly movie reviews too?)
2016-08-15 22857, 2016
CatQuest
and if we get GameBrainz too

I think Gentlecat at one point talked about getting BB hooked into CB? Maybe I'm misremembering.

i wouldn't midn that at all

but LordSputnik hello!
2016-08-15 22829, 2016

CatQuest: what about the instruments description field topic? is more discussion needed?
2016-08-15 22811, 2016
yvanz
(oh, it just took me so long to write a sentence, you already started another topic :)
2016-08-15 22846, 2016
CatQuest
yvanz: i definitely want more discussion on it, but finally, I have not as much to say about it, I will ldefer to reosarevok, Gentlecat and others about waht they think is best

CatQuest
ah, but basically, what reosarevok said, that if we *do* make a decission to change these disamb. we'd need to go through all of them anyway, so I might as well add instruments like I have been doing, and not to wory about it
2016-08-15 22803, 2016
CatQuest
I do add my own text and do try to be as short as possible
2016-08-15 22856, 2016
yvanz
Yes, it is more a question of what's the best way to handle translations. The disambiguation (or description with short content) is missing anyway.

well, the problem with running any firefox version other than latest or supported esr (currently 45) is that you don't get any security fixes. It's about as bad as using windows xp :/
2016-08-15 22844, 2016
LordSputnik
CatQuest: yeah, it works in 38, and that's over a year old, so I think you're one of an unfortunate handful :(

I'm an unfortunate handfull

2016-08-15 22837, 2016

thanks for working on this. I'll try to get a grip and move over to the later 30 sometihng
2016-08-15 22809, 2016
kepstin
I'd strongly recommend 45 at the oldest, for your personal safety :/
2016-08-15 22844, 2016
CatQuest
djea but then things have to stop sucking and braking first and they wont
2016-08-15 22815, 2016
kepstin
so it's a choice between "has known security issues" and "i don't like the ui"? :/
2016-08-15 22817, 2016
CatQuest
I don't mind safty updates and wish I could get those and the usability ones WITHOUT the interface changes
2016-08-15 22843, 2016
CatQuest
it's a choize between "more and more sites breaking" and "I can't use this because halp"
2016-08-15 22805, 2016
kepstin
well, at the very least, make sure you have a good ad blocker installed, consider using noscript, and be careful about what sites you go to :/
2016-08-15 22849, 2016
CatQuest
heh I have an adblocker, a cookie blokcer a flash blocker and RequestPolicy (which blocks *every* single offsite link unless i explicitly allow it)

I think ghostery was there at one point too but I got rid of it because between the others it was unecessary
2016-08-15 22823, 2016
CatQuest
but yea, I'd love if someone could just.. idk, put all the upgrade junk and usability junk from more recent editions and just. put it inside something that works the same way the ui does in the one i have
2016-08-15 22857, 2016
CatQuest
I'm fed up with borwsers that require upgrading every 30 minutes honestly
2016-08-15 22838, 2016
CatQuest
and this "remove all text from buttons and make those buttons so fucking gray hat do they mean? who cares!!! uuhhm... mobile stuff! waheeyy" whatever
2016-08-15 22805, 2016
kepstin
tbh, the firefox ui hasn't actually changed in quite a long time at this point. it's getting close to the time when they're probably gonna rewrite the ui all again...
2016-08-15 22841, 2016
CatQuest
great. hopefully they'll reinvent the wheel and let me put in text under the icons again! \o/
2016-08-15 22820, 2016
CatQuest
there is a user blug in thatallows this. but it conflicts with a plug in that colours tabs so they hshow up indomain colours
2016-08-15 22836, 2016
CatQuest
(very, very useful for me to see if tabs belogn to the same domain very fast)
2016-08-15 22839, 2016
CatQuest
i use it so much
2016-08-15 22810, 2016
LordSputnik
CatQuest: maybe you could try going up one version at a time, then fixing the UI to how you like it incrementally?
2016-08-15 22825, 2016
CatQuest
and then I have an issue with "session manager" stopping wokring after 35
2016-08-15 22849, 2016
CatQuest
LordSputnik: yea that's what I was doing
2016-08-15 22811, 2016
kepstin
well, going up one version at a time won't really help, because it's a sudden jump from the old xul-based ui to the "australis" ui
2016-08-15 22827, 2016
CatQuest
but the problem was that it literally didn't have the ablity to change that I liked after.. what was it 30 or something
2016-08-15 22833, 2016
CatQuest
yes that
2016-08-15 22854, 2016
CatQuest
asically 2i can chose icons with text underneath" or "make everything look like chorme!!!11"
rebuilding the UI in HTML so they can just render the entire window using the browser
2016-08-15 22839, 2016
kepstin
well, chrome is... basically the same
2016-08-15 22850, 2016
CatQuest
and so is opera
2016-08-15 22851, 2016
LordSputnik
I think Opera's pretty good for customization
2016-08-15 22855, 2016
kepstin
I suppose there's internet explorer, but that's IE
2016-08-15 22856, 2016
CatQuest
it *was*
2016-08-15 22813, 2016

(edge is of course basically the same ui layout as firefox and chrome, but even flatter)
2016-08-15 22843, 2016
CatQuest
last good opera was 12 on win and 10 on mac
2016-08-15 22802, 2016
CatQuest
what i liekd about ff whne i switched ot it was that it let me costumise things
2016-08-15 22803, 2016
CatQuest
I don't understand why people want things to be harder to use
2016-08-15 22820, 2016
CatQuest
if you like that chrome shit, fine! use it, let peopel customise so yo ucna have it differently
2016-08-15 22840, 2016
CatQuest
so people who like a can have a, people woh like gdgdbfdn cna have thnat then!
2016-08-15 22804, 2016
CatQuest
i don't get this bullshit "one way to do it and it's going ot be *this* way that everyone esle is doing
2016-08-15 22825, 2016
CatQuest
hello? peopel are not sillyputty to go trought a mold
2016-08-15 22831, 2016
CatQuest
people do things differntly
2016-08-15 22835, 2016
kepstin
well, as a software developer, supporting customization is *really hard*
2016-08-15 22841, 2016
CatQuest
because thwy are differnt
2016-08-15 22829, 2016
CatQuest
well they managed until the ui change
2016-08-15 22832, 2016
kepstin
the fact that firefox still offers as much customization as it does (which is still far more than chrome) is the fact that the mozilla org is still paying devs to make it that way
2016-08-15 22804, 2016
kepstin
but in order to do that, they need the browser defaults to appeal to the mass market :/
2016-08-15 22846, 2016
CatQuest
I just wish they did it properly, and not halfassed so people didn't have to install half a dozen plugins that conflict with eachother :/
2016-08-15 22846, 2016
CatQuest
oh yea that's fine , I don't mind assbackwards (to me, that is) "defaults"
2016-08-15 22858, 2016
CatQuest
it's whne the defaults are "mandatory" i just.. don't want ot upgrade
2016-08-15 22837, 2016
kepstin
so it's a hard balancing act of adding new features that people demand, fixing security issues, mass market appeal, and making sure customization works, and they simply don't have enough people working on it to do everything
2016-08-15 22851, 2016
CatQuest
it's like.. the browser is The tool i use on the computer the most, yanno? i need it to work *my* ay and not chnage la lthe time
2016-08-15 22803, 2016
kepstin
meanwhile, i'm sure google could do that with chrome - they sure have the money for it - but they explicitly chose not to
