I sent a desktop as checked baggage. One of the HDDs was damaged and the modem (okay, so it was a while ago) never worked right after.

Well, I was going to take out all harddisks and SDDs and put them in anti-static bags and carry in carry-on.

(That's gonna be fun at security...)

I'd say it's still risky. I have no idea what the hell happened to it, but there was definitely damage to the static components.

leave the cpu heatsink - they're supposed to stay bolted on very strongly anyway, pull the GPU if it's an expensive one just in case, put it in a pelican case and check it. If you're really paranoid, buy a starter pistol from a sporting goods store, put it in the case, and declare it as containing a firearm so the TSA will take extra care to not lose it.

last time I flew with a tower PC was 1998 and I literally brought it in a carryon luggage case and stuck it in the overhead bin. They don't let you do that anymore.
