pingupingu: what university are you with? It'd be great to have it in our free non-profit section!
      • kepstin
ruaok: for devices on battery, you normally expect to batch scrobbles to reduce power usage
      • so you have "sort of liveish multi-scrobbles"
      • Zastai
well I'm not sure why a client couldn't batch scrobbles, and it seems odd to call that an "import"
      • kepstin
which i guess for the moment you use archive for :/
      • er, import
      • ruaok
ah, interesting use case. interestingly enough this was all espoused by the former last.fm founders. :)
      • arbenina has quit
      • can you open a ticket and then I'll follow up with alastair about this? he was there too
      • kepstin
and if you're using import to handle live or near-live stuff anyways, why not just do single-track import instead of having a separate api for single track
      • (last.fm doesn't support historical imports via api, they reject anything dated more than about... 2 weeks? back)
      • which bugged me when I used my ipod with the rockbox scrobble log, since sometimes I went longer than that without uploading the scrobbles
      • saifulbkhan__ is now known as saifulbkhan
      • reosarevok
oh btw ruaok: I made my bot an autoeditor for the spotify URL changes, I can switch it back later if preferred though :)
      • ruaok nods
      • ruaok
ya know, the style BDFL has gotta have some benefits, no? :)
      • reosarevok
heh, yeah, I was reading that reddit post about how it's harder to scrobble now and I was like "these people never had to deal with offline ipod scrobbles, did they"
      • kepstin
unlike any of my phone apps, the rockbox scrobble log included recording mbids :/
      • UmkaDK joined the channel
      • Zastai has quit
      • (I still love how there's some artists - e.g. MOSAIC.WAV - where you couldn't scrobble them at all on last.fm - unless you had an mbid in the scrobble, which overrode some of the other checks)
      • pingupingu

        Quesito: 👍
      • Quesito: FWIW, it was meant as a response to "20:57:25 P<pingupingu> wanting to cross reference metadata across various 3rd party metadata providers"
      • Where resolving the MBID can be a very good starting point, for the reasons I outlined in that topic.
      • Quesito
right on--I was curious about this as well
      • i included your notes as well Freso (for context...) :)
      • Freso
        :)
      • reosarevok
Freso: doesn't help if the stuff isn't in MB, which is what they were saying happened
      • Freso
reosarevok: What they specifically said was happening was that their matching didn't find stuff in MB.
      • Oh, I didn't see that they replied to Rob's question.
      • Ah well.
      • reosarevok
Freso: <ruaok> pingupingu: have you verified that the data that should be matched isn't in MB? <pingupingu> yep
      • UmkaDK has quit
      • Yeah
      • Freso
Still, they can match what they can.
      • reosarevok
Sure, but if what they can't match is enough that they need an alternative method anyway, why pay for the one that's not good enough
      • Freso
Having MBIDs for that data that does exist in MB does mean better interoperability with a lot of other stuff.
      • kepstin
hmm, i'm kind of surprised that the listenbrainz payload doesn't include a defined duration field
      • (like, track duration, not listen duration)
      • could be useful as a hint for when a "playing_now" submission should expire, for example
      • ruaok
        can't make it requirement kepstin.
      • Freso
        Heh.
      • ruaok
mp3 files on their own do not contain durations. you have to calculate it.
      • kepstin
yeah, it would be additional_data like all the other fields
      • Freso
kepstin: Re: the verb for LB listens: https://chatlogs.metabrainz.org/brainzbot/metab...
      • kepstin
but most players will have it handy
      • ruaok
kepstin: might be good to add another ticket.
      • Freso
Not all players get it right though. :|
      • ruaok
we could add support and then "strongly encourage support"

Is there anything special I need to know about making an account for wiki.musicbrainz.org/?
      • kepstin
Quesito: it's a completely separate account from all the other musicbrainz stuff, no shared credentials. There'll be a popup box after you submit credentials - make sure you read and follow the instructions in it.
      • SothoTalKer
if you use the chrome webbrowser it will nicely hide the important part of the message ;)
      • Freso
samj1912: https://tickets.metabrainz.org/browse/PICARD-991 - I'll try and remember to come back and flesh out the description a bit later, when I'm not on plane wifi and about to run out of juice on the laptop. :)
      • BrainzBot
PICARD-991: Allow submitting AcoustIDs for matched Recordings
      • kepstin
SothoTalKer: oh, wow. we might want to reword the message then
      • (it's already been reworded a few times in an attempt to make it more obvious to people)
      • Freso
kepstin: The message is not shown at all.
      • Quesito
thank you kepstin....still not working...will swtich browsers perhaps...I'm not on chrome...
      • SothoTalKer
it completely hides what to put in.
      • Freso
      • kepstin
Quesito: are you getting a popup username/password field after filling in the create account page?
      • Quesito
        yup
      • Freso
      • Quesito
and i'm typing in what it says
      • kepstin
Quesito: enter "NOSPAM" in both fields (no quotes) and it should work...
      • Quesito
are you sure? it says 'NOTSPAM'”
      • kepstin
        er, yes, "NOTSPAM" :)

      • Freso thinks we should have had a MB-MediaWiki user plugin task for GCI...
      • ruaok
did anyone else notice that the wiki spam popup no longer gives the NOTSPAM/NOTSPAM clue anymore?
      • reosarevok
Yes, see last post on that forum thread :p
      • Quesito
SothoTalKer: kepstin Freso I'm now registered...glad I'm not the only one...
      • reosarevok
Freso: can confirm Chromium has the same issue btw
      • Freso
        reosarevok: Well, it's Chrome based.
      • SothoTalKer
        it's the other way
      • Freso
I've also personally confirmed with Chromium, since it's one of "secondary" browsers installed. :p
      • reosarevok
Sure, but you said "and possibly, by extension, Chromium" so I thought I'd confirm
      • Ok :)
      • SothoTalKer
        chrome is chromium-based :D

      • CallerNo6
speaking of, OTHER-180 should not have been closed.
      • BrainzBot
OTHER-180: Problem in Wikipedia of MusicBrainz https://tickets.metabrainz.org/browse/OTHER-180
      • ruaok
so, how can we collectively go about fixing the utter lameless of this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MetaBrainz_Founda... ?
      • CallerNo6
Oh, wait, not the same problem (based on the screenshot)
      • reosarevok
ruaok: by being less lame and hoping someone not connected to us improves it? :p
      • kepstin
CallerNo6: from the screenshot, that should have been closed, yeah. But we should open a new ticket for the new chrome :)
      • ruaok
what are their rules on not connected?
      • CallerNo6
Exactly, was looking for an open one.
      • Quesito
ruaok: wow. we need to do some work.
      • ruaok
Quesito: contractors of the foundation are not allowed to.
      • SothoTalKer
ruaok: find a wikipedia editor not involved with metabrainz and let they edit it
      • them
      • Quesito
        right.
      • kepstin
the tricky bit is of course finding sources for info that aren't either taken directly from metabrainz sites, and aren't original research (e.g. contributer directly interviewing metabrainz people)
      • reosarevok
kepstin: the article claims to contain info directly from us anyway :p
      • SothoTalKer
direct information from a website is not a big deal.
      • third party sources are always better, trhough
      • -r
      • reosarevok
legoktm: who isn't allowed to edit our page? Our paid workers, obvs, but anyone else?
      • (er, in Wikipedia that is)
      • SothoTalKer
is mr. doctorow still a key people?
      • Quesito
        yes
      • ruaok
kalman filters hurt my brain. anywhere here ever used them before?
      • SothoTalKer
the about page looks like a good start
      • reosarevok
SothoTalKer: we won't tell you what to write. You decide. Otherwise, we'd be cheating again :p
      • SothoTalKer
        cheating is good
      • wohoo, my last edit on WP was over 3 years ago :3
      • this should def. be in the wiki article: https://boingboing.net/2013/12/04/charity-sends...
      • ruaok: metabrainz got no coverage in the media. which is BAD. not much notability ;)
      • blogs don't count.
      • ruaok hates wp's notability rule
      • the english WP is rather lax on that issue
      • Quesito
who is the admin of our wiki?
      • SothoTalKer
the german WP. full of "notability nazis" =X
      • surtin has quit
      • kepstin
there isn't really all that much to say about metabrainz tbh, i'm actually kind of surprised it's not just included as a subtopic on the musicbrainz page
      • Quesito
SothoTalKer: the cake got a lot of press...
      • reosarevok
SothoTalKer: enwiki removes a lot of stuff for not being notable too. Although frwiki is my favourite, they consider MB links spam
      • SothoTalKer
Quesito: google news did not show many results :)
      • reosarevok: maybe MB should consider FR:WP links spam ;)
