zas has a much better understanding of speakers than I do.

your issue isn't so much a cabling issue, as much as "how do stereo's drive speakers"
2017-02-25 05617, 2017
CatQuest
right!
2017-02-25 05634, 2017
ruaok
yes, without a doubt you can make the cabling work. easy, right?
2017-02-25 05634, 2017
ruaok
but, will it work on an electric level?
2017-02-25 05606, 2017
ruaok
the range of possibilities is: works, but really quiet -- worked for 10ms then POP, now smoke it pouring out.
2017-02-25 05633, 2017
CatQuest
hmm.. the speakers are powered by a electric cable separate from teverything though..
2017-02-25 05655, 2017
CatQuest
they are "small" electric "pc/computer" speakers

they are connected together and has one audio jack out which goes into (one) machine/player/whatever.

CatQuest: I have used 2m cables m-m minijack cables just fine in the past.
2017-02-25 05659, 2017
CatQuest
one speaker is conencted to the other which has t the audio out and te electric in attached ot itself, thiso en also has a volume knob (and! a separate "phones" inn infront!)
2017-02-25 05631, 2017
ruaok
you want two sounds sources to share one set of speakers?
2017-02-25 05639, 2017
CatQuest
(presumably that means I can listen to things with headphones wiouth switching at the back fo amachine)

ruaok: ding!
2017-02-25 05609, 2017
ruaok
should work as long as you only have one source playing at time.
2017-02-25 05638, 2017
ruaok
play both and the results can range from everything is ok to clipping to breaking speakers.
2017-02-25 05642, 2017
CatQuest
yea. I'd likely turn off the one player if listing to somethingon the other :)

but wil lthe sort of cable with different colours on the males and icons of a headphone and a phone on each of those work? guy at the store said "probably not"
2017-02-25 05641, 2017
Freso
CatQuest: The eBay item you linked is likely not what you want. It seems like that is converting two 3-band plugs (audio-in + audio-out) to a 4-band plug (audio-in+out).

lazka has quit
2017-02-25 05617, 2017

Freso: that converts nothing -- it is a simple cable that does no conversion/processing at all.
2017-02-25 05632, 2017
CatQuest
Freso: yea ruaok oh?
2017-02-25 05636, 2017

the colors on ends and icons are hints for connecting things easily.
2017-02-25 05641, 2017
CatQuest
right!
2017-02-25 05648, 2017
ruaok
they should not affect the performance of the cable.
2017-02-25 05631, 2017
CatQuest
how do you see the diff between such a conversion thing and a one that doesnt?

this is cheap chine stuff so i dunno if it' any good
2017-02-25 05659, 2017

anything that does processing needs to have space for a circuit board and it needs power.

CatQuest
ruaok: !
2017-02-25 05611, 2017
ruaok
that cable has neither.
2017-02-25 05635, 2017
Freso
It doesn't need processing to send a signal from one wire to another wire...
2017-02-25 05642, 2017
CatQuest
I was wondering about that actually. since.. well how does a cable (presumably) nkow if the stream of electrons is going in one or the other direction
2017-02-25 05630, 2017
CatQuest
how does a wre know if it's a injack or an out jack though. .seriously?
2017-02-25 05639, 2017
Freso
CatQuest: It doesn't. Jack cables work both ways. (You can also use headphones as microphones. Try it!)
2017-02-25 05647, 2017
ruaok
the electrons will stop and ask for directions if it isn't clear.
2017-02-25 05647, 2017

2017-02-25 05652, 2017
CatQuest
:O that's basically waht i wanted to know, thnak you
2017-02-25 05617, 2017
Freso
But what that eBay item does is taking 2 3-band jacks and convert/direct to(/from) a 4-band jack.
2017-02-25 05642, 2017
CatQuest
so that means that this shoud lactually work, it might be a lowr sound or worse quality, but the sound/electricity/signal should travel from either male jack to the fmeale one
2017-02-25 05616, 2017
CatQuest
what is a 3 ban and a 4 band tho?
2017-02-25 05627, 2017
Freso
Ie., take separate "input" jacks for a mic (1 3-band jack) and a speaker/headphone (1 3-band jack) and output to a 4-band jack (audio out left, audio out right, audio in (mono, I guess?), and... ground?).
CatQuest: ^ Note how the L/R from Comp B is directed into the M channel. Soundsystem doesn't have M channel at all in its input.
2017-02-25 05609, 2017
CatQuest
so what you're saying is that the microphone inn is separate from l/r which the only microphone inn one doesn't have(or the that machine fon' output) so therefore (ofcourse) the speakers don't have the l/r input for mone of thme
2017-02-25 05630, 2017

I don't know why it's so hard. I couldn't find any of those L/R+M→L/R/M when I was looking for them a couple months ago, only the other type. :p

morning, I see you did audio stuff?
2017-02-25 05643, 2017
Leo_Verto
CatQuest, what exactly is your setup?
2017-02-25 05617, 2017
CatQuest
as I said, one pc speaker and two computers that I want both to plug in to the one speaker
2017-02-25 05620, 2017
Leo_Verto
okay, pretty sure a splitter wouldn't really work and not even be a good idea
2017-02-25 05625, 2017
Leo_Verto
probably even dangerous as your outputs would be "fighting" each other
2017-02-25 05652, 2017
CatQuest
why are people assuming i'd be playing things concurrently?
2017-02-25 05620, 2017

also two outputs to one imput is not at all uncommon, i mena i have something not disimilar for my tv and setup of gameconsoles
2017-02-25 05656, 2017

well, you still effectively short two ouputs together

I don't really, since it's neight impossible to find such a wire anyway :P
