      • m0n0g0n
the term "use MusicBrainz" includes also the web service api? very unclear statements in my opinion

@ruaok, is this whole commercial licencing model a kind of donation and legally not necessary? don't get me wrong, I don't want to steal something from the community, but i need the exact clear legal status of the webservice

So there's usually not much that very specifically doesn't return any CC-NC data. As you might have guessed, that's both because it's useful data *and* because it makes it more likely for us to get support, so we can keep running

ruaok, i suggest to remove such statements from faq website: "This site is free. CDDB is not.
      • 2017-05-17 13713, 2017

      • m0n0g0n
CDDB was made by volunteers sharing the track listings of their CDs with the central server that was run voluntarily, not for profit. This freely volunteered effort was effectively stolen by Gracenote, who made it a commercial service that you have to pay to use in your music player software, or if you want to download large parts of the database for whatever reason. m0n0g0n: you can freely download the entirety of the data, and run your own server with it
      • 2017-05-17 13714, 2017

The CC0 part at least can be used for whatever you want then

      • m0n0g0n
i know, thanks.. maybe you should make this more clear on your website
      • 2017-05-17 13759, 2017

      • reosarevok
If you want an extra service on top of that, then sure, that's not free - because it's also very much not free for us to provide
      • 2017-05-17 13740, 2017

      • m0n0g0n
yes, i know, but i think 100$/month as a minimum is very high
      • 2017-05-17 13755, 2017

      • reosarevok
I know almost no site that can survive on any other model with free data, except for Wikipedia who are immensely huge *and* they still need to do very aggressive marketing for donations
      • 2017-05-17 13724, 2017

      • reosarevok
Well, that's the kind of thing you can definitely discuss with Quesito over email :) We've historically been flexible with fees although I'm not exactly sure how that works, but she does :)

The only thing I could see the Amazon API working well with is something like headphones where you very specifically want the newest releases quick, but I imagine their API has some sort of conditions about piracy that might block that sort of use
      • 2017-05-17 13714, 2017

      • reosarevok
(ok, also for stuff like "this artist released a new album" without anything else, but I imagine not many people would pay for that)

Just a quick heads up: DBD::Pg 3.6.0 has broken utf8 support. Upgrading to it breaks the database import scripts. It looks like MBS-9342 was caused by it. Downgrading to DBD::Pg 3.5.91 resolved the issue.
