Yeah, I got it wasn't MB but I didn't know what you're working on :)
"A drone made with a disfuncional coffee pot."
CatQuest had no idea sorry
reosarevok approves of the site already
alastairp
yeah, we need to be more careful about our random sounds
reosarevok
Eh, that literally sounds awesome :p
(well, ok, not literally, I haven't listened yet)
"As you can imagine, the cost of maintaining Freesound has been increasing as the site has grown" can't you just throw all the stuff in the IA and just be an index?
CatQuest
:D
alastairp
storage and network costs are free for us
because of the university
reosarevok
Oh
alastairp
development costs
reosarevok
So what's the cost, maintenance?
Ok
alastairp
also, FS has always been a tool to collect secret data for research
so we keep track of downloads, clicks, etc
which would be more difficult if we move downloads offsite
reosarevok
Oh you evil spies
Ok, gotcha
But yeah, no point anyway if you don't pay for them :D
The patreon thing someone suggested sounds interesting
(I wonder if MB has ever looked into that)
alastairp
although, if there's anything that newhost move has shown me, hetzner is really cheap and we could probably host it on only 2 or 3 servers :D
yeah, patreon is interesting
reosarevok
I mean I've seen it for other things but not often for dev work
alastairp
we got a 500% increase in donations just by posting that, though
and many people posting their first comment on our forum in this thread, so it sounds like for the most part it's just a matter of telling people that they can do it
send them a nag email once every 6 months
reosarevok
(that is the only dev patreon I've seen)
Yeah, that sounds reasonable too
Of course, 500% increase usefulness depends on how much the start point is :p
alastairp
the download/everyone else ratio is incredible
we shift about 600gb of sounds a day
if 1/10 of downloaders donated $2 every time they downloaded, we would be self-sufficient)
including hosting costs
reosarevok
Well sure, and if every active MB editor donated $2 per month we'd have at least one extra dev, but eh
(that's why Patreon and the like are kinda neat, because they automatically are repeating IIRC so it makes it more likely they donate again and again)
(even if they forget about it :D)
alastairp
yep
Sophist-UK joined the channel
reosarevok
(and once you set a recurring payment it's easy to forget you have... as my paying my ISP for like 9 months after closing my contract proves *sigh*)
alastairp
we have paypal, we could always tell them to set up a recurring payment
CatQuest
reosarevok: you got that bakc thoguh, :O??
reosarevok
Yeah, but that feels different somehow. Dunno. Somehow "hey maybe make a recurring payment" sounds more like begging than "hey maybe use this site which happens to make recurring payments" :D
CatQuest: I didn't, but it got stored as "pre-payment" for my account
CatQuest
.. wich you never used anymore? ¬¬
reosarevok
So once I reopen a contract I'll just not pay for it for a while
alastairp
reosarevok: yeah :D
reosarevok
I mean, I might be able to get it back if I ask, but eh, effort
alastairp
it'd be nice to hook in to patreon to let people fund their favourite sound uploaders, too
reosarevok is even lazier than usual lately
CatQuest
btw, does anyone know of a neat way to incorporate the sort of grap like
