LAMP, KINGPIN, HEROIN and now ELK? Jeez, open source people.
samj1912
so we ended up going down this route :P
there is a stack named HEROIN? O.o
ruaok
no, but there ought to be.
samj1912
lol :P

Hi chhavi_ .I'm mostly interested in documentation, but a design that doesn't need as much documentation is even better (of course) :-)

chhavi_, you write about your first visit to MB, but what were your expectations? Did you have any pre-conceived ideas about the site before you saw it?
ruaok
come on, she's friend with samj1912. of course she expected it to be glorious!
right? ;)
CallerNo6
I ask because: for a long time, I've argued that the MB site evolved as a way to /edit/ MB, not as a way to explore it.
ruaok
evolved is totally correct, yes.
but should that mean that is its destiny?
CallerNo6
So its structure mirrors the database.
ruaok nods
(and it assumes that the viewer already think in MB terms)
ruaok
could it not evolve to be discoverable using the same structure?
CallerNo6
That's a good question. As others have pointed out, wikipedia manages to do both.
ruaok
we need to as well. we have increasingly larger number of artists coming to us who are not familiar with our terminology
CallerNo6
As editors or as tourists?
ruaok
tourists becoming visitors becoming editors.
I think we have an incredibly opportunity to shape how we draw people into the project.
we're finally ready. google indexes us.
we're now in a position to think about problems that have been on our table for a long time.
I see two
1) How do we bring in more editors? By hooking them in and letting them fall down the rabbithole, if they wish.
2) How do we highlight missing data?
1.a) How do we turn editors into voters?

1) pay them :D
2) big red exclamation marks :D
CallerNo6
I could imagine doing periodic workshops that get people started/engaged in voting.

ferbncode: hi. I'm traveling for 2 days, but will get back to review of your PRs on Tuesday
ruaok: I recommend you avoid the airport for a few months until they fix their security systems
it's horrible
ruaok
what's wrong with the systems? there was a strike. are there technical problems too now?
how much time did you spend in line?
agentsim joined the channel
CallerNo6
Can't they crowd-source that stuff? Everybody in the security line, frisk the person in front of you.
ruaok sees no flaws in that
alastairp
no, I mean the strike. We were in line about 15 minutes, but they were much pickier with bags in the xray
ruaok
last three times I've been "accidentally selected" for their extra bomb residue screen...

+1000 that is soo true
and the reasons for the issues with newbies and the idea I had about (atleast) two views
agentsim has quit
ironically it is also not really perfected for editing
so. many. things. could be made ui wize to make editing and SEARCHING and searcing to edit (ie search view and the information you're given in edit screens ) better

ruaok: Could we hook people into editing by getting Picard to highlight when MB data is only basic?
ruaok
yes!
CallerNo6
+1
(sidenote: it was rythmbox (I think?) that initially prompted me to add missing data to MB)
(whatever the default player was in ubuntu in 2007)
ruaok
last.fm's link back to us helped us with a huge jump in numbers.
we've been needing to do this sort of big picture integration thinking for many moons. I'm happy we have the capacity for it now.

To contrast MB with wikipedia (in terms of exploration):
wikipedia by nature has lots of links that can send you down all sorts of paths. tangents, general theory, similar topics.
ruaok
we do too -- we may not be as good as turning them into potential rabbitholes.
CallerNo6
MB is good at drilling down (members of bands, lists of works).
MB doesn't do as much to send you back up the tree, as it were.
ruaok
I think this is where the data from AB/LB/CB can shine. it provides these extra links to toss you into far flung corners of the DB if you want.
CallerNo6
Exactly
Lotheric
I know a lot of recent MB editors came to edit while using a french site senscritique.com
