Each function in utils is well documented, I don't think it should cause any prob in inferring data, but yes, I will try to understand your problem better once I have my laptop :)
what's the advantage of matrix over irc ? decentralized?

well, a few of us are on IRCcloud, which already gives us nice features, but we pay for each person.

ruaok: The beauty of a decentralized chat platform like Matrix is, you don't have to host the infrastructure :)

People here are already using Matrix and Riot too

It's possible to get a cleaner Matrix<->IRC integration by connecting a bot from Riot, instead of using the Freenode gateway bridged hosted by matrix.org
If there was an interest, I could help facilitate that for #metabrainz. It wouldn't change anything on IRC, but it would enable more advanced features for MAtrix/Riot users

(For anyone curious, the Matrix terms are bridged rooms vs. plumbed rooms)

most matrix clients are free and open source, including the Riot web/desktop client.

mozilla ended up getting (presumably paid) hosting from https://modular.im/ rather than using an existing large public server or self-hosting.

it's annoying, but you have to copy the url under "Link zu diesem Datensatz"
FWIW, as freenode staff, the Matrix people do not seem to have such a good grasp of their IRC bridging as some users of their service claims/thinks, but I don’t know enough about the technical details about it.

I do know that other freenode staffers who are closer to the metal relatively commonly complain about issues with Matrix people.

as far as it goes, https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-ircd (an "ircd" which is just a protocol bridge to turn an irc client into a matrix client) seems like a much better option than attempting to do two-way synchronization between two very different protocols that both have state.
