      • I'm pretty sure "skrælling" wasn't a nice word they called them
      • idk what it means, the closest I can think of in modern norwegian would be "skrulling" (crazy/werido) or "spjæling" (weakinling)

FYI, I've been thinking about it and thought I'd put it down here
      • I've personally historically appreciated album recommendations much more than song or playlists
      • With album recommendations, you get an order decided by an artist instead of an algorithm
      • And it's generally much better
      • Also, you just need to recommend one good album to make people trust your recommendations more
      • Vs songs or playlists where if you follow up a good song with a bad one, your credibility is pretty much gone
      • Also, even if the playlist decided by the algorithm is better than an album by some chance, I think people appreciate human curated orders of songs in albums more than auto-generated stuff.
      • None of this is backed up by actual data, but I believe that all of it is still true.
      • Lotheric
personally, I listen to albums, rarely playlists or individual songs (I do when I watch videos on youtube)
      • iliekcomputers
        Yeah exactly
      • If I was building a recommendation engine for myself, I'd make it recommend albums, not tracks or playlists
      • Lotheric
when I'm on spotify and I click new releases and a playlists loads up I'm like.. duh
      • iliekcomputers
        Yep
      • I use rate your music to get most popular albums
      • Or I go to good artists or genres and pick up albums from there
      • Lotheric
I grew up with cassettes and cds.. maybe it's different for younger peoples :)
      • iliekcomputers
I know people curate their own playlists these days
      • But I don't know anyone who really loves a single auto-generated playlist
      • I think generating good playlists is a much harder problem to solve than recommending good albums
      • And I'm not sure if generating good playlists is really a more worthy problem to solve than recommending good albums anyways
      • Lotheric
don't know any online service that recommend albums
      • iliekcomputers
I'm pretty sure last.fm used to many moons ago
      • But now, I'm not sure either
      • Lotheric
one thing I liked that they did is finding users with similar taste
      • according to their scroblles
      • iliekcomputers
        Lotheric: yes!
      • I'm supposed to be working on that :D
      • Lotheric
        That's a fun feature :)
      • iliekcomputers
Yep, I think we can get a first version of that shipped by the end of the year
      • Hopefully
      • Lotheric
I think it's more fun to find a user with similar taste in music (few common listens) and then explore what you don't know in their listening history
      • iliekcomputers
The problem I'm grappling right now is whether we should show similarity between any user pair or just show users other similar people
      • Lotheric
        ...than... auto-generated playlists...
      • iliekcomputers
They're different problems and need different solutions
      • Like if you're user x
      • Do you want to see similarity with any other user y
      • Or do you want to see the top 10 similar users to you
      • The auto generated playlists are also pretty much based off users who have common listens with you
      • But they still seem a bit too... impersonal, I guess
      • Lotheric
        for example
      • I listen to hip hop... (english, french and Québécois hip hop). I'm interested in finding new french hip hop from a fellow listener that listens to french hip hop but I don't want to listen to a 3 way split playlist of the 3 types of hip hop you see ?
      • Going to the listening history of a fellow listener with similar taste and trying a few unknown artists from his history is more fun to discover new music
      • for me at least
      • iliekcomputers
Hmm, yeah, that makes sense. That's essentially what our algorithm right now does. But because it generates playlists (and because it's an algorithm) it doesn't feel as good.
      • That is, it tries to find users similar to you and then recommend things you havent listened to yet.
      • I guess, exposing the actual similar users would be helpful for people
      • Then they get to make their own choices
      • Lotheric
it'll make LB more social too I guess
