Freso: after gentlecat, who else is an admin for the GitHub BrainzBot ? And who can update our translation strings on Transiflex ?
2017-12-03 33702, 2017
Freso
anshuman73: I can do admin stuff on Transifex, but I don't know anything about the GitHub bot. I can write Gentlecat and ask about it.

Freso
naiveaiguy: If you want to do any work on the IRC BrainzBot, you should poke Leo_Verto. I think there might be a few tasks in GCI for the bot already, but feel free to suggest something else if you have a good idea and there's a good chance we can make a GCI task for that. :)
2017-12-03 33720, 2017
naiveaiguy
Freso: there aren't any brainzbot tasks, but I was wondering why brainzbot doesn't do the same thing for github as it does for JIRA
2017-12-03 33729, 2017
naiveaiguy
and I thought I would implement it
2017-12-03 33752, 2017
anshuman73
Freso: yes, if that's possible, it'll be great. I'm not sure I have the ability to white-list some students on GH, and considering one of the tasks is going to require the regeneration of translation strings, I might need your help with that on Transiflex
2017-12-03 33724, 2017
anshuman73
naiveaiguy: we do get PR notifs, but I'm not sure if PR titles are necessary.
2017-12-03 33735, 2017
naiveaiguy
anshuman73: well I did want to work on BrainzBot since I can't claim another GCI task right now. what do you feel would be most useful to you guys?
2017-12-03 33736, 2017
anshuman73
we can make BrainzBot tasks too :) In fact Leo and I did talk about taskifying some Bot plugins
2017-12-03 33754, 2017
anshuman73
naiveaiguy: in the mean time, may I suggest adding a few albums to MB ?
2017-12-03 33735, 2017
anshuman73
although, to answer your question, it can be a fairly good discussion (maybe during tomorrow's meeting) about what all plugins we can use
2017-12-03 33744, 2017
naiveaiguy
anshuman73: I don't know anything about music so I've decided not to mess with Brainz project data for the most part
2017-12-03 33746, 2017
anshuman73
and if you want, we can task-ify them too
2017-12-03 33715, 2017
naiveaiguy
anshuman73: I would appreciate if they were tasks, but the review time is really killing my throughput on GCI
2017-12-03 33729, 2017
naiveaiguy
it's kinda dumb how you just have to sit around after completing a task
2017-12-03 33749, 2017
anshuman73
that's not a worry. I stayed on my API documentation task for about 10 days last year
2017-12-03 33716, 2017
anshuman73
it isn't, just what you make of it. I don't remember staying still last year.
2017-12-03 33733, 2017
naiveaiguy
anshuman73: so what do you suggest to fill the gaps?
2017-12-03 33759, 2017
anshuman73
Here's a few things you can do - explore a few repos - I ended up finding a problem with our docker config in one of the dependency repos
2017-12-03 33716, 2017
anshuman73
go through tickets that haven't been converted to tasks
2017-12-03 33725, 2017
anshuman73
(for a reason or otherwise)
2017-12-03 33728, 2017
anshuman73
ask help on that
2017-12-03 33733, 2017
anshuman73
get working.
2017-12-03 33751, 2017
anshuman73
I hope you have access to Jira for that one
2017-12-03 33710, 2017
naiveaiguy
yeah, I do.
2017-12-03 33722, 2017
anshuman73
my best shot at GCI is to not think of it as a competition
2017-12-03 33732, 2017
naiveaiguy
wat
2017-12-03 33748, 2017
anshuman73
but more of a 7-8 week learning experience where you have mentors who will have to help you
2017-12-03 33707, 2017
anshuman73
naiveaiguy: that's my 2 cents, but choice is yours ;)
2017-12-03 33721, 2017
naiveaiguy
I don't like to see it as a binary like that
2017-12-03 33745, 2017
anshuman73
binary is two choices - I only suggested one
2017-12-03 33757, 2017
naiveaiguy
It is a competion overall, but for each org it's basically the same as contributing to the org
2017-12-03 33712, 2017
naiveaiguy
anshuman73: as in, one option is competion and one option is learning experience
2017-12-03 33706, 2017
anshuman73
they've pretty much been the same to me in my experience :) Hackathons are competitions too, but in the end you go there to learn more stuff and create something good rather than to *just* win
2017-12-03 33715, 2017
anshuman73
sure, winning is a bonus
2017-12-03 33716, 2017
anshuman73
but hey, is a new laptop or a trip worth a life-long support from a community and the excitement of being responsible for creating a product ?
2017-12-03 33740, 2017
anshuman73
in addition to learning new stuff you wouldn't have otherwise cared to even search about
2017-12-03 33702, 2017
naiveaiguy
anshuman73: you are right about that. but that doesn't stop indian family pressure
2017-12-03 33708, 2017
arthelon[m]
:o new laptop
2017-12-03 33737, 2017
anshuman73
well, arthelon here got a flight ticket too for a hackathon so...
2017-12-03 33738, 2017
naiveaiguy
anshuman73: its just getting frustrating - i don't see a clear path ahead. i guess it's part of the process
2017-12-03 33750, 2017
anshuman73
naiveaiguy: I'm indian too lmao
2017-12-03 33706, 2017
anshuman73
I'm pretty sure your parents don't pressurise you to win GCI
2017-12-03 33726, 2017
Freso
legoktm, zas: Do you know if mails sent from the wiki are or aren't working at the moment?
2017-12-03 33728, 2017
anshuman73
naiveaiguy: It is a process of that. remember, your quality of work is more judged than the number of tasks you do. I've been with GCI for 4 years, this year, and trust me when I say I've seen people who do 7 or 8 tasks as being the GCI winner than people who did 30-35
2017-12-03 33708, 2017
Freso
Also, what anshuman73 said. :)
2017-12-03 33750, 2017
Freso
naiveaiguy: Being in here and helping other students and doing the best you can and generally being involved - ie., what you're already doing - *is* the path forward. :)

Not a big fan of all the boilerplate that comes with python web projects (specifically django)

there are quite a lot of feedbakc we've gotten on that vrt the signup process and issues, you with your coding background might be able to give even more indebth feedback too :O
2017-12-03 33732, 2017

yeah we've gotten a lot of good feedback for bookbrainz

yes, cooding tasks for bookbrainz is very wanted
2017-12-03 33709, 2017
anshuman73
naiveaiguy: also, it isn't exactly hard to check out MB data adding (along with so many scripts to help you out). In fact, like CatQuest_ stated, we could use feedback if it isn't fluid enough to add data, as we want everyone to be able to add data, regardless of their background

naiveaiguy: also what CatQuest said ^
