If I want to create a new release and there is already a Digital Media for my CD release, should I add it to the existing Release Group or create a new one?

I'll create a new one and if you say it should be the same I can still merge it (I remember it's easier to merge than to un-merge)

in general the same release (same tracklist etc.) but different media should be in the same release group

what is the release?

also, thank you for staying long enough for me to reply, a lot of people come in, ask their question, and leave before there's a chance for anyone to reply.
But when attaching the CD TOC I noticed differences in the track lengths

In the meanwhile I have another question. It seems Artists can be multi-lingual in the sense that when I search for the German name it shows me the original (French) name. In the Digital Release has the German term whereas I am only able to pick the original term. How can I pick the German one?

nvm. the Digital Release changed the "as credited" field to the German term. I'll do the same.

2) track duration differences of a second between CD and digital release doesn't suggest to me that they're different releases or recordings

I would consider those two releases to belong in the same release group

Release groups are meant exactly to group stuff like that :) So that you can find all the versions of an album grouped together.

Including different formats, bonus track editions, remasters, etc

Great addition anyway, I'll put in an edit to merge the two

derwin: thank you, I'll remove the annotation. I assumed the annotation is intended for texts like these
" You should never add copyrighted content copied from other resources, be they online or printed. More generally, you really shouldn't copy/paste any kind of content, unless it's purely factual. "

if I attach a CD TOC to an existing release, should I also correct the track lengths?

If there isn't already a TOC and you have the CD in hand then yes please! You are the A++ most excellent data source in that case.

that's also what I assumed. The durations differ up to 8 seconds but I have the physical CD, the barcode is the same and it's an existing CD release without disc IDs

Even if it's just from a rip log it's almost certainly better than what's there tbh

Nice! Usually in that case track times are copied from a digital release, from an online source, or typed in off the packaging, and in all of those cases your TOC is definitely better

I wonder what a report on the variance of track lengths for otherwise-identical releases (track titles, order) would say the average variance is in terms of seconds. Probably between 1 and 2 seconds?
2021-08-27 23912, 2021
derwin
or 0 and 1..
2021-08-27 23926, 2021
derwin
because probably most releases have identical track lengths.

I wonder what the variance would be if the corpus excluded exact matches? iow "for those which differ, what is the average variance?" I would think *that* would be between 1 and 2, because most would differ by 1.
