is the style guide mandatory seems a weird question to ask tbh

that's not exactly what that was
they're guidelines, not rules. it's on a case by case situ
SigHunter joined the channel
a lot of the mandatory conformity of titles have been relaxed in recent years in favour of "as on cover/artist intent" (eg see feat in artist credits) that I was simply asking spesifically. I don't disagree with reo's reasoning
reosarevok
It's true they're guidelines, not rules, and can be skipped if common sense says so
that was frustrating, I won't touch such edits in future

Well, in this case I don't agree that removing factual data for better tagging results is common sense.
mr44er[m]
that wasn't my argument either. i (and the label) see single track as factual data and that was my intention. that thing with untitled is another story. in the end it doesn't matter, that was more or less a 'drive-by' edit
with that in mind I think about itunes. sometimes if they stuff regular release together with remastered release and this doubles the track list...I could cry.
not exact 1:1 but I think you know, what I mean
atj
MonkeyPython: as reo stated, the guidelines are rules unless artist intent is provable
or beyond reasonable doubt
reosarevok
atj: not quite, otherwise they'd be called rules :)
atj
well yes, but you know what i mean
reosarevok
It's perfectly fine to debate why in a specific case the guideline should be overridden, but I expect the cases where that would happen are relatively rare, except for some old guideline that might need amending :)
But if a large amount of the community thinks a guideline doesn't make sense for a specific case, we can and do just make an exception for that case (if it's for a more general situation, we'd usually amend the guideline)
atj
i'm not saying the guidelines should be set in stone or never discussed
reosarevok
But yeah, anyway, in most cases I do agree :)
atj
it just struck me as odd to say "is this guideline mandatory" because that's not really how it works
reosarevok
I can entirely understand the argument here that "it's not actually meant to be a part number so part guideline does not apply" - but that said, if part 6 is a reply to part 5, that sounds in this case to be close enough to the point as to be equivalent :D
atj
anyway, apologies for the noise. my filter isn't working very well owing to lack of sleep
reosarevok
Oh no
I mean, nothing wrong was said, but lack of sleep is not nice. Nap time! :p
atj
well, it wasn't a very productive comment

what is the best way to do opinion polls? that thing with artist in forum hadn't much answers...on the other hand that's answer enough
reosarevok
The forum is the least bad way :)

I left IRC 2 years ago, replaced with matrix. there should be bridging possible
discordbrainz
<08wileyfoxyx> i'm from Discord right now, and by the [m] at the end of your username i suppose that bridging does work
mr44er[m]
yes, it does. I see that you're bridged from discord to IRC and the IRC-to-matrix 🙂
mr44er[m] uploaded an image: (53KiB) < https://matrix.moviebrainz.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/entruempelung.haus/HkNHpTByEGnWeszIzQsPbIZT/Bildschirmfoto%20zu%202024-05-15%2014-50-05.png >
do you get a link to the screenshot like over IRC bridge would do that?
discordbrainz
<08wileyfoxyx> yup, though as for me it already displays an image with no need to go thru the link
the other way works only with link from cdn.discordapp.com...but anyway, it works 😄

a 35 year old protocol still gluing things together

in the 90s, quakenet-irc and diablo2 channels were mandatory. 🙂 later then I became mod in the german BSDforum, in parallel we had IRC running. but shiny things like sending pictures and audio made us move to matrix, bridges to IRC-hardliners for ~2 years, then a cut
it is old and sure it works, nearly no bandwidth needed...but some things made explaining easier (screenshots) and this was the gamechanger
previous protocols or attempts to make encryption socially acceptable for non-nerds failed or fell asleep. Matrix has made a big step in this regard, in my opinion. the backwards compatibility through the bridges alone is worth a lot.
mostly everything is optional and just works, own server may be a bit more work like always
what then did not work good or at all was admin stuff on matrix-side to IRC-side. permissions were not 1:1 via the bridge
tldr; you still need OP in IRC native. maybe that's changed in the meantime, dunno if that was restriction of the bridge or libera
