<12Aerozol> The Discord has way more 'casual' chatter. If you are interested in the dev side of MeB then that's all on IRC (but we do have that bridged to Discord, apart from the BookBrainz channel - coming soon?)
kepstin
hmm. i guess the downside of specialized channels over on discord is that people here on irc won't be able to participate in any on topic musicbrainz discussions that happened to be in a specialized channel :/
derwin
also Discord is a walled garden which could turn you off at any moment

Hellooooo, I'll ask here because I don't really know what to search for on the bugtracker... When I open an already tagged track/album in Picard and it finds a different cover art (via fanart.tv in my case), it shows the files as "excellent match" instead of the "no changes" green checkmark. So far so good because it *would* change something. However, if I then choose "Keep Original Cover Art" (and there are no other changes
to the tags), it doesn't go back to the green checkmark. It stays on the "Excellent match". Is that a known issue? It's been happening since.. well, forever, I just never bothered asking
Also while we're on the issue of Cover Arts: When a track already has embedded cover art and no Cover Art Provider is enabled in the settings, it nukes the embedded art on saving, but nowhere does it indicate that. It shows the art so one would assume it would leave it alone.

oh actually it seems the second one is just a display bug, it doesn't show in the UI but ffprobe still shows it and reloading the Album also shows it again.. my bad D:

@derwin I knew it was the right place, but usually I search the bugtracker first - just didn't know what to search for tbh :'D I opened an issue now after searching for cover art came up empty

people who grew up in the smartphone era find irc to be archaic and overly complex
you can argue about the technical and moral issues with proprietary protocols until the cows come home but it isn't going to persuade most people to use what they consider to be a worse service
tarulia
People that grew up in the smartphone era don't even know IRC exists :P
atj
and why should they?
kellnerd
I had never heard of IRC before MetaBrainz to be honest
tarulia
not saying they should :D

matrix seems like the most feasible IRC replacement from a non-proprietary PoV
tarulia
Yeah that's what I see used most in the Open Source space (if they're not on Discord)
Sciencentistguy
yeah tbh i only use irc for either this channel or asking help for things
although i am in a number of communities that mirror across discord, irc, and sometimes others
matrix is unfortunately quite poorly implemented imo
atj
it's getting better to be fair
sadly it all seems to be being funded by one organisation though

<05rustynova> > "this, and I also don't see how spreading it all out is good tbh" I do find it neat to have organised channels. It allows to keep questions to one place, or vote requests to another, so that peoples don't step on each other while talking. As for IRC people not being able to participate, true, that's an issue. But it's kinda the same as saying discord people cannot directly participate on Reddit. It's just two
different places. And if you really want to participate, come in directly :^) To be clear, I got nothing against the IRC. It's just two different things and both have their ups and downs
atj
rustynova: i don't think anyone specifically has anything against IRC. it's just not a platform they are comfortable with.
i've seen lots of really great new editors who have become much more involved because there is a community on Discord

matrix offers threaded ..uhm lets call it mini/split-up chats (without excluding or hiding anything). that's exactly for >It allows to keep questions to one place, or vote requests to another, so that peoples don't step on each other while talking
tarulia
Discord does too but the admin needs to enable it per channel
mr44er[m]
IRC isn't bad per se. maybe old, but it works. matrix (and discord) fill in some gaps with nice and shiny features IRC doesn't have. the option with bridges would allow slow migration, but doesn't force it.
but maybe I don't get the point. this channel is bridged to matrix and discord, so no need to use IRC at all
tarulia
I didn't know about the Discord bridge until earlier and I don't have a Matrix account so I just popped on here because that's what I always did lol

We're a music database, not a general music channel - so I expect not :)

i know of this my ? is how to get the right data info as the same to all platforms in order to be recognized from here.
<05rustynova> I'd even say, it's best to do it yourself as artists know the most info about their own works. And unlike Wikipedia, you can edit your own entries freely

hm, how do we handle a digital release from a streaming service, where the original date predates the streaming service provider?
for example a release from 2001 which i only see on apple music and 12" vinyl
(there was never a CD or anything)
thuna` has quit

<02UltimateRiff> sentriz: in general, it's probably best to leave the date field empty for a case like that, although I've found that sometimes you can get an actual release date from Deezer
<02UltimateRiff> (or at least what appears to be an accurate date)
sentriz
> although I've found that sometimes you can get an actual release date from Deezer
would that mean in my case a release Digital Media from 2001?
since Apple Music says copyright <label> 2001
discordbrainz
<02UltimateRiff> when was the vinyl released?
mr44er[m] joined the channel
mr44er[m]
questionable dates are mostly the CD-release date on streaming platforms
discordbrainz
<02UltimateRiff> in general, I don't trust Apple Music and Spotify metadata any farther than I can throw, lol
mr44er[m]
next thing to compare would be vinyl, in this case...yeah 🙂
<02UltimateRiff> (ah, I missed that this was apparently only released on Apple Music...) I'd probably leave the release date blank. you can add the copyright dates in the relationships, in this case to Sub Static Records
sentriz
okay so no date for the digital release in this case
