I get the whole vetting process so there aren't bad updates, but man, when I'm in the middle of ripping CDs and I find an edit that needs to be done, I don't want to wait days/week for my edit to go through. I make a change on discogs and it immediately shows up when I scan again for that
• I'm sure my voice won't change things and again, I get why there is a delay... it just sucks for when I'm trying to currently tag something and "do the right thing" and fix the entry (or put a new one in)

Yeah, I get you, I've had to put CDs to the side before too
• For what it's worth, there is the vote-request places on forum and Discord that you can ask for votes if you're trying to push something through sooner
• JollyRgrs
nice, but i'm a bit impatient
• sadly... i'll just make edits in discogs if i want immediate :/
• i already had to wait a delay before i could make any edits AT ALL on MB... and then after that, I have to wait for the edits to be voted through
• again, I get why that is there... I'm not asking for a change, it just pushes some people away

i think a big part of it is that not a lot of people actually vote on edits
• you only need 3 positive votes for an edit to go through, either immediately or in 24 hours

volumetrique0[m]: yeah. i'm not trying to be some horrible person, but I legit just don't care that much. I don't have friends in the MB scene, my online friends are just normally into IT or games. and again, I'd want like... < 2 min approval
• that's just too much work for me
• like I said, I get it, i'm not asking for a change, just making it known how it affects some people's use of the platform

FWIW I just looked at your Thug Love edits and approved them ;-)
• It would be nice to add the rear cover art to confirm all the featured artist credits but I found a rear cover scan on discogs.
• JollyRgrs
Cheezmo_: thanks and yeah, tbh i hate scanning the rear b/c taking the rear out with the two sides is such a PITA. I only sometimes do it
• i'll try and at least scan the front covers if they aren't there
• Cheezmo_
I always try to do front, medium, and rear. I am usually ditching the jewel case anyway so taking it apart is not a big deal.
• Ran out of space for jewel cases years ago, lol.

• JollyRgrs
yeah, they crank it down to 600x600 i think... def. not so great in that aspect
• Cheezmo_: not all discs are jewel cases, a bit harder to preserve the cardboard cases. I still have my CD/DVD/BD cases on the old school racks in the corner of a room. I'd put them in a box somewhere, but those boxes get HEAVY... and I still don't want them in a non-conditioned space
• lazybookwyrm[m]
Actually scanning stuff atm lol
• Cheezmo_
Trust me, I know. I have a collection of SACD, DVD-Audio, Blu-ray Audio, etc, all kinds of packaging. For cardboard it is pretty easy to open them up and scan the front and back together, upload that then crop it to just the front and upload that so it is all there but with a nice front cover separate.

I just set up a screen to auto open the scans so I can make sure it worked all right and don't find something rescan worth when I go back to crop and straighten stuff

Does Picard have some weird limit on filename sizes? It's refusing to name one of my albums properly when the actual name fits in the filesystem limits
• Oh, is that what the 259 char path name option is for?
• nope, doesn't look like it
• Cheezmo_
Is it around 260 characters?
• zayd
hold on i'll have to check where it cuts off at exactly i manually moved one of the directories in hopes of correcting it earlier
• Cheezmo_
May be a Windows limit you have to do something special to increase? https://www.thewindowsclub.com/how-to-enable-or...
• I really don't know I'm just a Mac user googling.
• zayd
I'm on Linux (btrfs) and disabled the Windows compatibility to test, didn't help
• ok so the path itself is 298 chars
• but the song file names cut off at '00 - {first 4 chars}.ape'
• my drive seems to be doing something weird right now
• nevermind messed up the path but the rest of what i said is actually true
• threw it into the path it's actually supposed to go in instead of the 298char one (this one is 286 including disc number) and it still does the file cutoff the same way
• JollyRgrs
i setup a bash script to use imagemagick to crop and move my scans to the most recent folder for the times I have to scan. it is nice
• works fine for CD inserts, I gotta go manual if it's a cardboard or something not-normal
• tbh, i hate when i accidentally get an SACD mixed in with my standard CDs. I gotta go drag out my sony BD player to rip that one in the middle of trying to rip my CDs
• and for the record, I really hate that discogs adds their "(3)" (for disambiguations) on the track artist credits
• i much prefer MB
• Cheezmo_
The best part of MB is using Picard to tag and the scripting it supports.
• JollyRgrs
what scripting?
• Cheezmo_
• JollyRgrs
I use mp3tag b/c i've used it from probably before picard existed (when I first ripped my CDs at 192kbps back in the early 00s).
• i mean, i use mp3tag for tagging and then renaming and use the tag info for folder/file names
• zayd
JollyRgrs: i find it kinda annoying how mb will sometimes spell an artist's name a bit differently on releases
• like sometimes Limp Bizkit will become Limpbizkit or LimpBizkit for some reason
• JollyRgrs
yeah, though sometimes the artist spells it differently on the album spine
• so, who do you blame?
• zayd
JollyRgrs: nobody really but it does get annoying when looking at my storage
• JollyRgrs
or worse, when an artist changes their name... how do you sort it? under which name? do you split it and store under each name?
• yup
• zayd
is there any mb policy on how to correct this if at all
• lazybookwyrm[m]
If you're tagging I'd assume there's a standard artist name you can use\
• * If you're tagging I'd assume there's a standard artist name you can use
• Cheezmo_
Picard has an option to use standardized artist names which uses the actual artist from MB instead of the release specific name.
• zayd
i've been using picard to tag for a while but i'm not very familiar with the rules and standards for mb still
• JollyRgrs
the O.C. Supertones were known as the Orange County Supertones. POD used to just go by "payable on death" on their old albums. I would hate storing 2 diff folders for the different names of them for the same band
• zayd
Cheezmo_: oh
• seems to be quite a few artists like this
• MF DOOM has like 30 names and Septicflesh can sometime become Septic Flesh
• Cheezmo_
Lots of retagging when Jay-Z decides to be JAY-Z, etc.
• zayd
doesn't effect filenames for me but the album i was talking about earlier with the name limit is weird with this in the actual tag field as some tags are "Tom Petty", some are "Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers", etc
• all on one release
• Cheezmo_
It took me several years to be comfortable editing in MB and a few more after that before I was trusted enough to become an auto-editor. I still learn new things and have to review the style guidelines frequently.
• JollyRgrs
zayd: yeah, it shouldn't vary within the same release group
• zayd
i have a couple cds i need to add to mb
• i know one of them is by an artist that isn't on there at all
• Cheezmo_
What is the Tom Petty album? If it is a compilation, there could well be both.
• zayd
Cheezmo_: it was a multi disc compilation

I wouldn't at all be surprised to see that have both Tom Petty and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers tracks on it.
• Cheezmo_
Yeah, so some of those tracks were on Tom Petty albums and some were on albums by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers", different artists.
• zayd
i wish mb allowed anonymous edits so you didn't have to dox yourself documenting local bands that nobody's heard of, but at least i can make an alt
• JollyRgrs
zayd: I thought about that exact same thing. actually kept me from uploading a certain thing b/c they were local local
• then again, I have other discs for "local" bands from across the US from when I was traveling or living in another area, etc.
• Cheezmo_
Why do you feel like you can't add an artist?
• JollyRgrs
but yeah, I agree, it is a source of concern for me
• lazybookwyrm[m]
The key is to just enter every little group you find info on some random website
• zayd
JollyRgrs: i have at least one disc i got while on vacation thrifting, i'm going to make an alt with a random name to document it once i get around to ripping
• lazybookwyrm[m]: true
• lazybookwyrm[m]
I was entering some small Japanese bluegrass groups yesterday lol
• zayd
oh the compilation also includes stuff by mudcrutch which throws another thing into the mix
• i'm not going to "fix" it as it's completely accurate though
• as in edit locally, not change the data on mb
• Cheezmo_
There is nothing to fix? It is a compilation with multiple artists.
• zayd
Cheezmo_: that's what i was saying and why i was putting fix in quotes
• i should probably start trying to fill in the gaps for some musicbrainz release groups too
• Cheezmo_
I"m curious how you want to edit it locally? Why wouldn't you want to have the tracks credited properly locallly?
• zayd
some of them are missing catalog numbers that exist on discogs
• Cheezmo_: I don't want to edit it locally or at all, I said that already
• sorry if i wasn't clear, i've been awful at typing things out the way i intended to lately for some reason

the irc bridge on discord
• apostrophes get replaced with the ampersand escape thing
• idk what its called, kinda like and stuff
• zayd
three way bridging is kinda weird it seems
• duckfromdisc[m]
three w--
• zayd
as you appear to be coming from discord to matrix, then to irc
• duckfromdisc[m]
oh shoot i didnt see it was matrix too now
• zayd
i forgot this even had discord, i've never seen anyone use it
• duckfromdisc[m]
heh
• Cheezmo_
I would probably rather use discord, if I ever get signed out of the IRC client, I'll probably never find my way back. Need something more modern.
• zayd
i guess it would be best to open a forum thread about my filename issues
• lazybookwyrm[m]
The Discord also has exclusive channels
• zayd
Cheezmo_: what client do you use?
• i've grown to really like weechat after avoiding it at first
• JollyRgrs
i've been using weechat since the mid to late 00s and love it. the default config was a bit nicer than irssi back then and I think I made the right choice between the two
• zayd
i don't hate irssi but i find it a lot more barebones and harder to get set up how i like it than weechat
• JollyRgrs
right, that's what made my decision for me back when
• weechat had a default that was closer to what i wanted
• zayd
i moved a bit after hexchat died
• Cheezmo_
I"m using LimeChat
• JollyRgrs
so using picard, can it do things during file rename like making sure there is no trailing dot at the end of a folder name?
• zayd
LimeChat? i've never heard of that one
• JollyRgrs: there's probably a way to filter it using the naming scripts
• i've never had to do this but i'm willing to bet the scripting allows it
• Cheezmo_
I"m on Mac. Not sure why but it is what I found that worked some years agao.
• JollyRgrs
i'm doing my rips via abcde (using Automatic Ripping Machine, ARM, which uses abcde for music CDs) but I have to use a tagger to handle the ones that aren't quite right, or come back as unknown. sometimes the release is in MB, but the discID didn't match up
• zayd
at first i wasn't sure if i was looking at a tui or a gui
• JollyRgrs
zayd: yeah, b/c things like R.E.M. ... windows doesn't like trailing dots on file/folder names
• linux? no problem, but windows has issues
• zayd
JollyRgrs: i use EAC in wine which unfortunately seems like the best option for me
• Cheezmo_
For the trailing dot to be at the end of a file name, it would have to at the end of an albuum, artist, or track name and sure, easy to remove at that level before the file name is generated.
• JollyRgrs
when using windows or a GUI, i use EAC as well
