i wish there was a good ripper for linux that could do accuraterip

Cheezmo_: yeah, not really a concern for file name b/c it'll have a file ext. added to the end of it. more just an issue for album/artist names (for the folders)
it doesn't like using name placeholders properly no matter what i do to it
2024-09-29 27339, 2024
zayd
which isn't that big of a problem now that i think about it as i use picard anyways
2024-09-29 27351, 2024
Cheezmo_
Hmm. In MacOS, the folder becomes "R.E.M_" not sure when that happens.
2024-09-29 27339, 2024
zayd
Cheezmo_: i would've expected macos to behave more closely to how linux does for that but i guess their fs is pretty weird too
2024-09-29 27328, 2024
lazybookwyrm[m]
Whipper embeds mbids so it should be super easy to put them into picard to change the naming
2024-09-29 27335, 2024
lazybookwyrm[m]
I use whipper > beets
2024-09-29 27349, 2024
zayd
lazybookwyrm[m]: oh shit does it? i'll give it another chance in that case
2024-09-29 27307, 2024
zayd
i've heard of beets before but never seen much of a point, what does it offer over picard?
2024-09-29 27312, 2024
aerozol[m]
Picard will not end files with a trailing dot by default, for obvious reasons
2024-09-29 27347, 2024
lazybookwyrm[m]
beets is similar to picard, but command line and keeps track of all the music in it. So can edit your naming format in your config then run a command to make everything in your library match that naming format.
2024-09-29 27322, 2024
lazybookwyrm[m]
Also has a plugin that lets you run a command to sync your library with any new musicbrainz edits
2024-09-29 27305, 2024
zayd
lazybookwyrm[m]: i just throw my music directories into picard whenever i need to update
2024-09-29 27312, 2024
zayd
back into*
2024-09-29 27333, 2024
lazybookwyrm[m]
The one caveat with Whipper is it uses discids. So discid needs to be in musicbrainz. And if you're picky about your rip being matched to the exact release you'll need to check if the discid is correct or on multiple releases. But I like it overall
2024-09-29 27309, 2024
zayd
i still have it installed, so once i'm done tagging my current batch i'll give it a try
2024-09-29 27344, 2024
zayd
lazybookwyrm[m]: would it be possible to make whipper encode to monkey's audio instead of flac or is that hardcoded
2024-09-29 27312, 2024
zayd
i might be one of three people that actually uses .ape but i still consider it better than flac
duckfromdisc[m]: i do too, but i'm considering switching
2024-09-29 27336, 2024
zayd
i've heard that wine can cause accuracy issues in some rare cases but i've never seen this in my own logs
2024-09-29 27309, 2024
zayd
so it mostly comes down to being able to use things natively for me
2024-09-29 27331, 2024
duckfromdisc[m]
oh youre on linux?
2024-09-29 27337, 2024
zayd
duckfromdisc[m]: yeah
2024-09-29 27351, 2024
duckfromdisc[m]
hm... i wonder what happens if you rip the same disc from linux and windows both on EAC
2024-09-29 27305, 2024
zayd
i'm pretty sure that whipper is linux only either way
2024-09-29 27305, 2024
duckfromdisc[m]
the weirdest problem i've had is that if you have the Dokan kernel driver installed, EAC hangs when you try and open a file dialog.
2024-09-29 27308, 2024
lazybookwyrm[m]
Never heard of monkey's audio, don't think whipper has it though
2024-09-29 27328, 2024
zayd
lazybookwyrm[m]: it's the full name for the codec .ape files use
2024-09-29 27336, 2024
duckfromdisc[m]
wait so ppl actually use .ape files?
2024-09-29 27342, 2024
zayd
duckfromdisc[m]: i do
2024-09-29 27357, 2024
zayd
they offer better compression and i have hardware capable of decoding them just as quickly as flac
2024-09-29 27309, 2024
duckfromdisc[m]
is it lossless or lossy?
2024-09-29 27312, 2024
zayd
lossless
2024-09-29 27341, 2024
zayd
recently the encoder went open too
2024-09-29 27355, 2024
duckfromdisc[m]
what makes you prefer ape over flac?
2024-09-29 27302, 2024
zayd
idk what's going on with the wikipedia page though, it says the encoder is bsd 3 clause but also not an open format
2024-09-29 27320, 2024
zayd
duckfromdisc[m]: as i said before better compression while also not causing performance issues on my setup
2024-09-29 27332, 2024
duckfromdisc[m]
neat
2024-09-29 27346, 2024
zayd
flac doesn't cause issues either, but one of the main criticisms of monkey's audio is that it does
2024-09-29 27355, 2024
duckfromdisc[m]
OH ok
2024-09-29 27355, 2024
zayd
which it doesn't for me, even on the highest compression
2024-09-29 27302, 2024
duckfromdisc[m]
i was gonna say. gotcha that makes sense
2024-09-29 27309, 2024
zayd
i've realized recently that cds are such a calm format to back up and store compared to something like blu-ray or even dvd
2024-09-29 27359, 2024
duckfromdisc[m]
i need a better backup system
2024-09-29 27309, 2024
duckfromdisc[m]
i just can't afford much storage. unfortunately my backup is just copying stuff
2024-09-29 27339, 2024
zayd
i might buy more storage sometime soon
2024-09-29 27355, 2024

2024-09-29 27328, 2024

2024-09-29 27310, 2024

2024-09-29 27340, 2024

personally like id just use EAC and picard bc i dont rip CDs often enough to warrant autotagging
2024-09-29 27306, 2024
duckfromdisc[m]
oh never heard of that interesting
2024-09-29 27309, 2024

according to datahoarder wiki
2024-09-29 27311, 2024

3>SMR allows for more tracks per platter whilst using larger write heads by overlapping the tracks, this results in a slow write speed for SMR drives.
2024-09-29 27320, 2024
duckfromdisc[m]
ah so more space but slower
2024-09-29 27331, 2024

recently another member here got me into picard so ive been using it and adding my own stuff lately. but basically every CD ive had to rip (so like two ever) was on musicbrainz and/or whatever EAC uses
2024-09-29 27324, 2024
duckfromdisc[m]
i wonder if my ripped CDs are in my picard lib rn
2024-09-29 27340, 2024
duckfromdisc[m]
oh they are! and my log too!
2024-09-29 27300, 2024

ripped a very scratched CD and only one track was marked as inaccurate, and i couldn't even hear the difference. i wonder how EAC works

i wonder what a survey of currently-used music players would look like these days

plexamp has been mny recent one, except just plex media player for dvd-a/sacd (plexamp can't do surround sound)

i use ncmpcpp (mpd) most of the time and mpv for stuff that hasn't been properly sorted into my mpd library yet
