i wish there was a good ripper for linux that could do accuraterip
JollyRgrs
Cheezmo_: yeah, not really a concern for file name b/c it'll have a file ext. added to the end of it. more just an issue for album/artist names (for the folders)
it doesn't like using name placeholders properly no matter what i do to it
which isn't that big of a problem now that i think about it as i use picard anyways
Cheezmo_
Hmm. In MacOS, the folder becomes "R.E.M_" not sure when that happens.
zayd
Cheezmo_: i would've expected macos to behave more closely to how linux does for that but i guess their fs is pretty weird too
lazybookwyrm[m]
Whipper embeds mbids so it should be super easy to put them into picard to change the naming
I use whipper > beets
zayd
lazybookwyrm[m]: oh shit does it? i'll give it another chance in that case
i've heard of beets before but never seen much of a point, what does it offer over picard?
aerozol[m]
Picard will not end files with a trailing dot by default, for obvious reasons
lazybookwyrm[m]
beets is similar to picard, but command line and keeps track of all the music in it. So can edit your naming format in your config then run a command to make everything in your library match that naming format.
Also has a plugin that lets you run a command to sync your library with any new musicbrainz edits
zayd
lazybookwyrm[m]: i just throw my music directories into picard whenever i need to update
back into*
lazybookwyrm[m]
The one caveat with Whipper is it uses discids. So discid needs to be in musicbrainz. And if you're picky about your rip being matched to the exact release you'll need to check if the discid is correct or on multiple releases. But I like it overall
zayd
i still have it installed, so once i'm done tagging my current batch i'll give it a try
lazybookwyrm[m]: would it be possible to make whipper encode to monkey's audio instead of flac or is that hardcoded
i might be one of three people that actually uses .ape but i still consider it better than flac
duckfromdisc[m]: i do too, but i'm considering switching
i've heard that wine can cause accuracy issues in some rare cases but i've never seen this in my own logs
so it mostly comes down to being able to use things natively for me
duckfromdisc[m]
oh youre on linux?
zayd
duckfromdisc[m]: yeah
duckfromdisc[m]
hm... i wonder what happens if you rip the same disc from linux and windows both on EAC
zayd
i'm pretty sure that whipper is linux only either way
duckfromdisc[m]
the weirdest problem i've had is that if you have the Dokan kernel driver installed, EAC hangs when you try and open a file dialog.
lazybookwyrm[m]
Never heard of monkey's audio, don't think whipper has it though
zayd
lazybookwyrm[m]: it's the full name for the codec .ape files use
duckfromdisc[m]
wait so ppl actually use .ape files?
zayd
duckfromdisc[m]: i do
they offer better compression and i have hardware capable of decoding them just as quickly as flac
duckfromdisc[m]
is it lossless or lossy?
zayd
lossless
recently the encoder went open too
duckfromdisc[m]
what makes you prefer ape over flac?
zayd
idk what's going on with the wikipedia page though, it says the encoder is bsd 3 clause but also not an open format
duckfromdisc[m]: as i said before better compression while also not causing performance issues on my setup
duckfromdisc[m]
neat
zayd
flac doesn't cause issues either, but one of the main criticisms of monkey's audio is that it does
duckfromdisc[m]
OH ok
zayd
which it doesn't for me, even on the highest compression
duckfromdisc[m]
i was gonna say. gotcha that makes sense
zayd
i've realized recently that cds are such a calm format to back up and store compared to something like blu-ray or even dvd
duckfromdisc[m]
i need a better backup system
i just can't afford much storage. unfortunately my backup is just copying stuff
zayd
i might buy more storage sometime soon
duckfromdisc[m]: you can get decent seagate drives for fairly cheap
my main storage is a (sadly smr) 8TB barracuda i got for $99
5400RPM HDD, but that's more than enough for music and even hd video
duckfromdisc[m]
smr?
zayd
Shingled Magnetic Recording
duckfromdisc[m]
personally like id just use EAC and picard bc i dont rip CDs often enough to warrant autotagging
oh never heard of that interesting
zayd
according to datahoarder wiki
3>SMR allows for more tracks per platter whilst using larger write heads by overlapping the tracks, this results in a slow write speed for SMR drives.
duckfromdisc[m]
ah so more space but slower
zayd
it's an issue if you want to do RAID or ZFS but should be fine otherwise
duckfromdisc[m]
recently another member here got me into picard so ive been using it and adding my own stuff lately. but basically every CD ive had to rip (so like two ever) was on musicbrainz and/or whatever EAC uses
i wonder if my ripped CDs are in my picard lib rn
oh they are! and my log too!
ripped a very scratched CD and only one track was marked as inaccurate, and i couldn't even hear the difference. i wonder how EAC works
zayd
i wonder what a survey of currently-used music players would look like these days
JollyRgrs
plexamp has been mny recent one, except just plex media player for dvd-a/sacd (plexamp can't do surround sound)
zayd
i use ncmpcpp (mpd) most of the time and mpv for stuff that hasn't been properly sorted into my mpd library yet
ivy
is there a way i can see my votable edits which were rejected?
reosarevok[m] joined the channel
reosarevok[m]
There should be links for that from your profile IIRC
ivy
ah, thanks. (apparently i do not have any, that's good)
aerozol[m]
Congrats. No xxtreme editing though!?
ivy
i only edit obscure albums no one else owns so no one can see how bad my edits are :-d
aerozol[m]
Haha that works too!
lazybookwyrm[m]
The secret is to cancel edits when you see you might lose
JollyRgrs
oh that edit? HAHA! JK!!!!!!!
ivy
lazybookwyrm[m]: i did do that once but only because i was persuaded by edit comment that my edit was wrong
aerozol[m]
I start a new account whenever I get a downvote (this is a joke)
ivy
that sounds like something i might actually do
JollyRgrs
hey ivy146, any significance to the number 146? lol
ivy
JollyRgrs: i have no idea... are you using the Matrix gateway? maybe that added a number to my nick for some reason
JollyRgrs
ivy: it was a joke that you changed your nick that many times b/c of bad edits
ivy
oh :-d
JollyRgrs
i'm not sure if that miss is saying my dad joke was REALLY GOOD... or REALLY BAD
i'll just see myself out now
aerozol[m]
For real though, no shame in a few downvotes

that awful feeling when you're browsing your music collection and you find an album "(CD 3)"@
time to visit rutracker and find some files with more correct tags
