very definitely. it's always easier to fill in missing info later, rather than correct wrong info
      • muxxerexe[m]
There are like 100²² videogame databases out there
      • For the love of god why can't I do negative filtering
      • Just because of this I'll dedicate the next decade of my life to build GamesBrainz
      • zoedivision[m]
so i just tried dabbling in works publishing rights lookup for the first time and, ooph
      • didn't go well
      • this album doesn't actually have songwriting credits??? -> https://www.discogs.com/release/219503-Moev-Hea...
      • i tried the websites suggested on the MB Works page, but simply no dice
      • (did get a few hits for other songs, just not stuff from "Head Down")
      • JollyRgrs
why is it that MB makes it so hard to find a release when it is for various artists? lol
      • reosarevok[m]
        Why is it hard?
      • (and what could be improved)
      • JollyRgrs
reosarevok[m]: sometimes when i try to find an album (release, whatever) it doesn't come up, i'll get all this other crap... then i google the same thing and find the release page directly and boom, there it is!
      • i search with all lowercase and then with case-correct and get different results (neither one what I want) sometimes
      • other times, works fine
      • or maybe i have a colon or "1" vs "one" where the one in MB does not have it that way, and it blows the entire search
      • reosarevok[m]
Hmm, ok - next time you have an example, let me know
      • Maybe we can figure out some ways to improve things, or suggest some ways to find them
      • If someone has an opinion on MBS-13785 please do comment on the ticket :)

duck: whew this was a while ago! i do remember how this went down, at that point i still thought following the formatting on streaming sites was a good idea, thankfully averyfollet was around to stop me from doing so 😆... [00:47] duckfromdisc[m] i find it odd that you can't represent those tracks as the same recording since we don't have a feature to use the same recording but have a different name
      • you can definitly, defenitly do that, the tracks in the tracklist cna have a different name thna the recording
      • moviuro_ is now known as moviuro
      • YoMo12[m]
reosarevok (@_discord_1151240977378463764:chatbrainz.org) here is an example of how clunky the search can sometimes feel.
      • I made a double ee when looking for a name and the correct artist shows up as the 12th result! Should of been the first result even with this typo IMHO.
      • reosarevok[m]
Heh. I'd agree, not sure how the search server looks at that
      • I would have expected too that it would have made less of a difference than it did

        SEARCH-730: Searching with a Typo
      • crism
YoMo12, reosarevok: it’s tokenizing the search string (benny, frieedman) and returning all the hits on either. All the hits are for benny; there are no hits for frieedman at all, and it is only coincidental where Friedman is ranked in that result. If you search for “bennny frieedman” you’ll get no results at all.
      • Adding some kind of fuzzy searching would enable that to work — return exact matches for the whole string, then exact matches for any part, then near matches for any part, but within each part of those matches, they could be ordered by Levenshtein distance or some other similarity algorithm. That would result in Benny Friedman being the first hit for “benny frieedman.”
      • duckfromdisc[m]
afro I have cancelled my edit and voted for yours
      • LupinIII: i figured it out eventually lol
      • \-1 is now known as \-
      • zoedivision[m]
there's been occasions lately where I'm trying to create an additional release that's going to link with existing recordings, and the search won't logically show me the ones by the artist I'm editing. it'll be all sorts of random recordings with similar titles. I have to type the group name in the bar to narrow it down to what I need.
      • Lorenzo[m]
Hi! I'm currently importing a Bandcamp release where there are several tracks titled "Untitled I", "Untitled II", etc. In this case each track should be imported as "[untitled]" without the numbering, right?
      • I'm asking because other releases from the same label were imported in the past with "Untitled I", etc, left untouched as it is displayed on the Bandcamp page
      • + I've already checked and this case doesn't seem to be covered in the Style Guide
      • s/+//
      • reosarevok[m]
Well, that kinda almost sounds like a title 😅
      • Lorenzo[m]
reosarevok[m]: Yeah I thought the same
      • reosarevok[m]
But if they do it for all their stuff... then maybe not. Those all-untitled releases are often confusing
      • Lorenzo[m]
At least it is a way to designate a specific track
      • reosarevok[m]
I don't think anyone would complain if you do Untitled I etc for now, if others have been imported that way
      • They can always be changed later
      • [untitled I] etc would theoretically be an option too
      • Lorenzo[m]
reosarevok[m]: It's not that kind of title, actually there are 4 untitlted (non consequantial) tracks out of 21
      • Lorenzo[m] uploaded an image: (51KiB) < https://matrix.chatbrainz.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/bXvGxtjJNwjVFqRJakizOzDz/image.png >
      • s/title/album/
      • reosarevok[m]
Hmm. I'd probably keep those as Untitled I etc for now then
      • Lorenzo[m]
Nice, thank you for the quick answer!
      • reosarevok[m]
If someone in the edit notes has strong opinions, just talk it through there :)
      • (because they might know more about the label etc)
      • But for now, don't overthink it
      • magnog[m]
Is the reason my releases aren't showing on LB after a few weeks due to archive being down?
      • BobSwift[m]
Lorenzo: You could also try contacting the artist for clarification of their intent.
      • Maybe I'm just lucky, but I've got about a 90% response rate from Bandcamp artists.
      • JollyRgrs
i had a discrepancy with an album I had... the disc itself had like 15 tracks but even the jewel case/art mentioned 16 tracks. I was able to email the artist about it and got a response that basically said "some ppl bootlegged our CD"... but A) it wasn't really big enough that I would think there was any bootlegging scheme. B) it was sold in a Christian bookstore (national chain), so I really
      • doubt there was a lot of bootlegging going on. but the answer was pretty abrupt and honestly kind of rude, so I just went "oh well". so yeah, even with a response, might not be what you want, but at least you tried :D
      • zoedivision[m]
I won't lie, I feel guilty about bugging an artist over catalog trainspotting matters
      • I've found typos and discrepancies on Bandcamp that I really want to email one in particular about, but I'm worried about how to broach that issue. It just feels kind of rude. 😅
      • aerozol[m]
Hey reosarevok, this seems like enough of a change that I shouldn’t transclude it myself. Could you please have a look at my latest edit here? https://wiki.musicbrainz.org/index.php?title=Re...
      • Oops, edit link, but scroll up to history and it’s there, thanks!
      • magnog: Releases being updated on LB is out of my wheelhouse - but I think I remember someone (@RustyNova?) mentioning that submitting a listen can trigger them being added? Another thing that needs improvement, for sure
      • Haha zoe.division, they will either think you are a very weird stalker, or be really happy that someone cares! You never know which way it will go 😅
      • Mentioning that you are entering their catalogue into a open-source database for posterity is always a good opener imo
      • JollyRgrs
welp, got my 740 CDs ripped... won't be adding more discs in any normal frequency from here on out... thanks for all the help
      • aerozol[m]
        :0 huge effort!
      • Time to get a scanner 😝
      • LupinIII
can't find it now, but I see that mentioning that the "singles after EP" (now a scema change) is in theworks
      • i was*hoping*that the lb chang would inspire the mb to change too
      • it's bugged me forever
      • aerozol[m]
reosarevok mentioned it in the LB channel! Let’s not let him forget it 👼
      • LupinIII
        ah!
      • so it was there. that explains why i cannae find it in either music or meta :D
      • zoedivision[m]
oh good news aerozol, today I find the power cord for my scanner 😆
      • aerozol[m]
        Yay!! RIP your free time
