Yeah, the internet is a bigger killer of buying media than anything
Pirating's mostly replaced by streaming now, but if streaming ever becomes inconvenient it'll probably come back
Seems to be more recently for movies and TV with how annoying streaming is getting for them
hypeventure[m]
<lazybookwyrm[m]> "Yeah, the internet is a bigger..." <- Right and I gotta admit. I still had a collection of tracks in wav/flac/aiff format
These are high quality, and it's meant for sets I do, or sampling
Or use as a reference material

I *paid* DistroKid to put my music on multiple channels… so far, it’s been a net negative. *shrug* (It did not get me on Spotify; no idea how to crack that without a label.)
aerozol[m]
DistroKid should definitely have gotten you on Spotify? I used CDbaby and it put it on all the distros, I thought the others would too. Maybe you had to opt in (or they latched on an extra fee or something, but that would be weird)
crism
DistroKid says they submitted to Spotify. Some of the services took up to a year to show up; maybe Spotify is just tired of sea chanteys. (I don’t seem to be on Pandora either.)

Huh, maybe things have changed in the last couple of years, it went up on all platforms after a few days when I last did it

Interestingly the only place that has really paid $ is some tracks being played by college radio in the US, and the odd Apple purchase/stream

Oh man, definitely don’t lock into a monthly payment imo! I would just pay up front. CDBaby doesn’t take a cut it’s just a flat fee to upload something, forever
Obviously it costs more up front though, but F repeated payments
To be honest I don’t even know how distributors justify a ongoing cost. As far as I can tell they do very little once the music is on the platforms, just report and send earnings/plays back to you
hypeventure[m]
Yea
And that is pretty much what they do
They are just the bridges for dsp and labels
They don't have to be that serious
aerozol[m]
Looks like CDBaby lowered their prices, 10USD to upload an album to all platforms. But they take 9%
f$&^ing middle-men
But if you’re not expecting massive plays a % cut is much better than a monthly fee
9% of a few cents :P
Bandcamp for life though

SoundCloud next pro is even worse, including fl studio subscriptions linked with distrokid
I hate that xxx records dks in the name
*at least tunecore is better than distrokid in terms of pricing, 50 bucks per year
(and I don't even have an option to pay monthly, yay)
:(
crism
DistroKid is a small annual fee (or, a bigger payment to ensure perpetuity). A friend recommended it as worthwhile, but I have since learned he may be insane. Oh, well. I have a day job. Bandcamp is my primary channel, though most of my revenue comes from in-person CD sales, still.
hypeventure[m]

Opus has quit
People just music streaming so here in my region, CD is not a mainstream thing anymore
aerozol[m]
Not 10$ per song btw, 10$ per album
crism
I play festivals in my specialty genre; CDs still sell well there. Raves, probably not so much…
hypeventure[m]
aerozol[m]: Yeah I know
But a bunch of releases
This is a problem
aerozol[m]
Still better than an annual or monthly fee imo
If $10 is too much for you to spend per release, then I’m not sure what value your label is offering? I suppose it depends what the wages are in your country, but that’s a pretty minimal cost. My complaint is just that there’s basically no return so what’s the point
At least you can release everything on Bandcamp for free, see how it goes
What does 50 a year get you :S

Lol
<aerozol[m]> "If $10 is too much for you to..." <- I was plan to making my label as a platform
It's not just the home for my music but also for everyone else
aerozol[m]
What do you mean? You have to go through a distributor no matter what afaik. e.g. I upload via CDBaby but put my label into the label field
hypeventure[m]
Oh you could...
<aerozol[m]> "If $10 is too much for you to..." <- Now I rethink about it... Yeah definitely you right
Upload for once and it will be remain forever
aerozol[m]
In any case, keep us updated on how the label goes :)
hypeventure[m]
aerozol[m]: Yea as a small label, that will do the thing
aerozol[m]
Yeah, I’d rather not lose sleep over repeat payments/have something taken down, but that’s just me. I have a friend atm who has an old music project she is considering if she should keep paying the annual fee for or not… it doesn’t recoup the costs, but it would be a shame to take it down. She could reupload it with another distributor but then she loses the album stats and tracks in playlists I think? In any case, that’s
made me glad I didn’t go for a recurring fee
hypeventure[m]
What's even concern is when transition to bigger label once it qualified for bigger giants such as ampsuite
Aka moving catalog
I mean, distributor
aerozol[m]
I don’t really get why you would move distributors once it’s up
hypeventure[m]
In case if I release a lot of singles and album
Btw does cdbaby bundle with physical release in 10 bucks?
aerozol[m]
You can put as much up via CDBaby etc as you like. You’d have to really be sure there’s some value being added to move to something fancier
I think they used to do physical but not any more
crism
CDBaby used to do physical… there are a lot of URL edits in MBz about that. (The NGS meetings were held in the London flat of the CDBaby owner or founder or something, I forget which.)

why doesn't MB record musical mode? that information would help DJs mix harmonically (coming from a Mixxx corner here, which has enums for such though they're not used)
<milkii> "why doesn't MB record musical..." <- THAT HAS TO BE A FEATURE
The included meta such as BPM, and song key/Camelot, will helps a lot for djs
Together with the integration to rekordbox, mixed in key and serato, will allow these software to skip a portion of analyzing process
Since the key is already identified on the database itself
Say that I had a track that already has a meta, I can ask the software to either based on file name to find the matching metadata and update it automatically, or let me choose one by myself
Even better, another feature here: Search by multiple filters, including key, genre and BPM
Then if the track has a Spotify link or any provider, we can preview using them to hear how they sound
Then if I like it, I can save it to collection
Then I can make list and bunch and so on using it
I had a bunch on tracks in my library and it's been a hassle way to organize music for sets without help from rekordbox, and it's not even a free software
STYLE-758: New column for BPM (beats per minute) for recordings

\> Just going to fix this one release
\> 1 hour later of researching artist relationships started by looking at one artist
Bluegrass and southern gospel are both huge rabbit holes that I keep falling into lol
Do you guys think it's worth asking for an obituary url relationship type, or just file them under biography?

todays edition of "why we need alternate tracklists":
when the cassette release has four tracks; but the official digital download release is 'whole side = one track'
this is 2024 we've had good modern codecs for eons, there's no reason I'm not splitting those side-length tracks 😂
aerozol[m]
I don’t know if alternate tracklists would solve that problem, I think it’s just for naming tracks? You probably need to tag against the cassette
hypeventure[m]
Sounds like my track will needs a vip mix or something
s/Sounds/Maybe/, s/like//
Just saying. Together was an old track that sounds worse
:(
zoedivision[m]
the anal side of me (and who among us doesn't have one?) just sees it fundamentally flawed to tag a digital release as a cassette, or vinyl, or anything else that it isn't lol
I guess as usual the inner logic of MB is too lofty for me to comprehend 🤷♀️
