Hey, I've never contributed an edit before. I've got a 3 cd album which isn't in the db yet. What I'm going to do is make 3 entries with the same release group, right?
So like title [album] Disc 2, release group [album]?
elomatreb[m]
@Tekk: No, if those discs belong to the same album, they should all be part of one release
also, welcome
Tekk
Thanks :)

When you're looking at the tracklist editor, there is a button near the bottom where you can add more media
Tekk
Ahh, "Add medium"?
I'd thought that was for alternate media (like "this album has both a digital and vinyl release")
elomatreb[m]
That would be separate Releases in the same Release Group
you can think of the Release Group as a sort of "abstract essence" of an album/single/etc
(there are cases where you would have both vinyl and digital in the same Release too, e.g. if you order a vinyl and the artist also includes the music on something like a flash drive)
(but that is rarer)
Tekk
Gotcha
Tekk grumbles because apparently the acbde EXT field isn't artist, so that has to be fixed manually..
But hopefully I'll have an entry soon :)
elomatreb[m]
if it just swapped the artist and track title, there's also a button for that at the bottom of the editor btw
Tekk
Nah, it ripped the title and artist as [tracknumber][title]-[title] for some reason
If the info was there I could just swap it with a regex.
elomatreb[m]
ah

<Tekk> "grumbles because apparently..." <- If you're able to, I'd recommend getting away from abcde. It has been unmaintained for a number of years now so who knows how long it will still work.
If you're looking for a good alternative I'd recommend whipper. Picard can also import the whipper logs to fill a bunch of information on submissions automatically.
Tekk
I'll take a look at that.
elomatreb[m]
although whipper hasn't been exactly thriving with activity either
Tekk
Eh, I've got 0 problem with using old software as long as it works.
elomatreb[m]
yeah
main advantage of whipper is that it can use the proper musicbrainz API instead of CDDB
tarulia[m]1
That and the log file IMO. The logfile can come in handy for releases that aren't in the DB yet at all, or to definitively identify a release when there are a bunch of similar releases in the release group
Tekk
The former's where I'm at right now. 3 CDs worth of various artists.
and I have a buggy cdparanoia so I'm not sure how useful the log's gonna be. Fun times.
tarulia[m]1
yeah that's what I mean. You can import the log file into Picard and from there submit a new release or attach to an existing release (which you'd have to do for a 3CD release)
Tekk
Yeah
tarulia[m]1
Tekk: its not really about the rip log, it's more about the metadata that whipper logs into the file. It logs the TOC and CD Text for example so Picard can fill all that automatically
minimal has quit
Tekk
tarulia[m]1: Huh, it's not even the metadata it logs.
Now whipper will just straight-up be like "Hey, click here to open musicbrainz with the info I could rip prefilled"
tarulia[m]1
I haven't used it in a hot minute, IDK when that was added. Maybe it was around the last time I used it too 🤣
heh.. just checked my edit history and the last time I had to add a release was in 2017 so... yea
