does an early fade-out edit of a track count as a new recording or is that more of a mastering difference?
      • the kind that shortens the track by about 10 seconds
      • The recording guideline is a bit fuzzy to me on that topic — it says "different volume fades at either end of multiple tracks are not reasons to maintain separate recordings - they are considered mastering differences unless they cause the structure of the song to change" and to be honest I can't quite tell whether that applies or not
      • dvirtz[m] joined the channel
      • dvirtz[m]
        it also says
      • > Where a fade is added to the first or last section of an existing recording, this is not an edit, as the section is not removed.
      • Cheezmo
It is a tough call. I generally consider whether there is something unique in the faded out part such as dialog (live intro, etc.), a unique guitar riff or something not just repeated.

could be an edit of said recording
      • Do they have the same ISRC ?
      • reosarevok[m]
It's confusing to me as well based on that guideline if it actually shortens the track rather than just fading it
      • Lotheric[m]
in doubt, it's best to keep separate
      • reosarevok[m]
The guideline is very clear for volume fading out, but if there's a cut... yeah dunno
      • (I'm a works person, so listen to these other people instead)
      • zoedivision[m]
currently the only ISRC I have is what's on streaming which is the shorter track, I'm not finding one for the longer CD version
      • Lotheric[m]
        what's the longer release ?
      • you have the url ?
      • zoedivision[m]
        in MB or elsewhere?
      • dvirtz[m]
Have you listened to the longer version? It might be that the CD artwork just has an inaccurate timing
      • Lotheric[m]
        MB
      • zoedivision[m]
dvirtz: yes I compared side-by-side via Audacity
      • I imported the current 15-trk streaming version via Harmony just a bit earlier, that's when I caught this matter
      • Cheezmo
If you compared them and the only difference is where it fades out, I would be inclined to use the same recording. I would also add an annotation to the recording explaining that is the case so someone doesn't guess wrong and undo it.
      • zoedivision[m]
the more I think about it, the more I don't really understand why the "edit" guideline doesn't consider a fade to be "removing" a section
      • reosarevok[m]
I think that the point is "if the section is still there but it fades out in volume"
      • But not "if the section is actively removed from the recording"
      • But again, not a recordings person 😅
      • zoedivision[m]
I feel like this grey area could be resolved if there were such a thing as, like, a sub-recording 😅 or inter-recording relationships
      • dvirtz[m]
        there's `edit of` relationship
      • zoedivision[m]
Indeed, but it implies separate recordings, which is the question at hand
      • doesn't it?
