tarulia: it's a various artists album
2025-12-15 34908, 2025
tarulia[m]1
But does that really imply a compilation? 🤔
2025-12-15 34908, 2025
tarulia[m]1
A compilation in my eyes is various existing tracks compiled into a new collection and released, but that's not what this is
2025-12-15 34944, 2025
tarulia[m]1
The same would be true for something like Moulin Rouge. Yeah it's from a bunch of different artists, but the songs were all made for the film and released as part of the Soundtrack

It is what this tag actually is about. This is a very specific tag that originally got used by iTunes to handle such albums, and several other players use it as well
That is such a weird definition x_X I mean I can see how some might find it useful, but for me it's just weird lol

You can of course set it however you want. E.g. you can use scripting to set it to match the MB release type. But just be aware that it is a tag that might trigger your players to treat this release slightly differently.

Do you have any specific issue in your player when this tag is set?
2025-12-15 34920, 2025
tarulia[m]1
No, I honestly don't even know what it would do (in Jellyfin in my case).
2025-12-15 34920, 2025
tarulia[m]1
I was just editing a single file though and noticed it so I was wondering, I don't really have a specific issue or anything.

If you don't want this tag to be written at all, use a script $unset(compilation). If you even want existing tags to be removed when saving use $delete(compilation)
2025-12-15 34959, 2025
tarulia[m]1
ah yeah was just looking into that and found delete, guess unset is the better option in case some files already have it
2025-12-15 34958, 2025
tarulia[m]1
I'm not opposed to it or anything, for a single file it just doesn't really make sense, and I don't know what it would do anyway 😅
2025-12-15 34908, 2025
outsidecontext[m
What this mainly does in iTunes (and other players might do something similar) is that it does not cause all the track artists to be listed in the artist list when browsing. The idea is that you don't get a huge list of artist entries that just have a single featuring on one track

Although I don't really understand the documentation on it...... (full message at <https://matrix.chatbrainz.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/chatbrainz.org/tjtPlzZyyKSxBHNumxTOlCLA>)

outsidecontext[m: mh... I mean, I kinda want that though?
2025-12-15 34937, 2025
tarulia[m]1
There is a separate album artist for a reason after all 🤔
2025-12-15 34937, 2025
tarulia[m]1
Album Artist for the "clean" list and Artist for *every* artist including ones that only participated
2025-12-15 34948, 2025
tarulia[m]1
Maybe iTunes doesn't have those separated
2025-12-15 34905, 2025
outsidecontext[m
So how Picard sets it by default it should usually affect all files of an album. But it can totally make sense to set this selectively on albums to exclude the track artists from the artist list
2025-12-15 34927, 2025
outsidecontext[m
As I said initially, it is a very player specific tag. If your player doesn't use it or it shows things as you expect I wouldn't really bother.
2025-12-15 34919, 2025
outsidecontext[m
And player specific mainly means iTunes introduced it an used it in a specific way.
2025-12-15 34909, 2025

So if I understand right, if on something like this:... (full message at <https://matrix.chatbrainz.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/chatbrainz.org/AYgTDHXORisqBtlrdHHIkxWB>)

If the artists have other releases that are not marked as compilation then iTunes would of course list those artists
2025-12-15 34905, 2025
tarulia[m]1
well yeah, I meant more "participating in", not their standalone releases
2025-12-15 34927, 2025

2025-12-15 34949, 2025

no, just trying to understand what it does
2025-12-15 34925, 2025

the only time I had to use itunes was like 10 years ago to copy some tracks to my GF's iPod :'D
2025-12-15 34904, 2025

As I said, it mainly is about this artist list. And probably also holding releases with different artists together
2025-12-15 34937, 2025
outsidecontext[m
But you also wrote that album artist is what should hold an album together, and I think this is generally the case for most players really. So if you set the album artist to Various Artists that usually does the trick as well
2025-12-15 34927, 2025
tarulia[m]1
yeah I have a couple different "Various Artists" set via scripting as well, derived from the release type
so like for Soundtracks for example I set the album artist to "Various Artists - Soundtrack" to group all my soundtracks together to not have them lumped up with (actual) compilations
