curious if anyone knows the best way to handle region-specific artists? group called « atarashii gakko! » has a different name in Japan (新しい学校のリーダーズ) and it causes there to be a mix-up when scrobbling for me. don't mind making changes locally, but figured i'd ask if i should make the global variant of the artist or bare with

that artist already has an alias with an english version of the name, "Atarashii Gakkou no Leaders"

is this a tagging problem? like, you want them tagged in your files with the english name instead of japanese?

ah, interesting, looks like they've gone with "ATARASHII GAKKO!" as the official english stylized version of their name.

as far as tagging goes, if a release has different artist credits and track names (e.g. translated or transliterated) in a certain region, that should be added as a separate release (using artist credits to translate artist names)

if there's no official releases, there's also the option of adding a pseudo-release with translated/transliterated artist/tracks for tagging purposes.

Indeed it looks like a lot of their stuff has been published internationally under the "ATARASHII GAKKO!" name, so adding additional releases is the solution

oh, that's annoying. the release group page doesn't show the artist column if the release artists are the same - even if the artist credits are different.

so I've added a second version of the single to https://musicbrainz.org/release-group/ff18ebd5-... but it's hard to tell which is which because you can't see the artist credit differences.

TIL: japanese classic credits sometimes use the conductor (指揮) name in their artist credits 梅田俊明指揮のだめオーケストラ

alright, i'll slowly add up their other stuff with the international name. i think the best way to discern from the JP variant is to either have no or the worldwide region tag for that release.

derwin: very late sorry, but I would never consider different track times a replacement for a disambig. Experienced editors might not need it, but untangling recordings suux

Could someone link me an example release with two different release dates? I'm trying to test something and I can't seem to find any such release

Am I right in assuming that adding a nonsense release to test my earlier request is OK on test.musicbrainz.org?

ah, seems like it just uses the earliest release date for the tags and ignores others

elomatreb[m]: yes, test.metabrainz.org is a sandbox, its data comes from an old dump, it can be played with for test.

yeah, I figured as much when I saw the nonsense releases on the frontpage :)

It is currently running an old version of beta (Aug 12) plus deployment patches.

There was a banner after database reset in May/June, but it seems to have vanished since then.

To be clear, there *is* a banner at the top for me, but it just says "This is a MusicBrainz development server. Return to musicbrainz.org."

I see, there was another banner too with added details, but it can be edited/removed by editors for test.

The still current banner is auto-generated and cannot be edited by logged-in testers, it should probably contain these details instead.
