dvirtz: you use manual when automatic doesn't give a good result for some reason

reosarevok (@_discord_1151240977378463764:chatbrainz.org) Thanks. I also can't get my head around how numbering the entities is considered an automatic ordering.

dvirtz: In automatic numbering the items are sorted by the part number. That's well suited for every series where the elements inside the series have some kind of numbering. It would be annoying to have all the items have a number, but still need to adjust the order manually.
      • In manual mode the order can be freely set by moving around the elements manually.

@outsidecontext, maybe it would be better to call it ordering by number instead of automatic in this case
      • outsidecontext[m
        probably, yes.

Well, the thing is that there is also an order if there is no number
      • Release date or whatever

Thought it is alphabetical by name.
      • reosarevok[m]
Maybe, I never remember since I generally either use numbers or don't care about order
      • But there is some automatic order without numbers, anyway :)

For festivals i saw that people entered the year as number or the episode number. I don't know why, because it will have the correct order anyway. Each episode has the year in its name.

      • reosarevok[m]
Because it's usually the "numeration" of festivals really :) Some actually use numbers and then I'd expect people to use those? šŸ¤· I don't think it's wrong anyway to use year if no other number exists
      • dvirtz[m]
IMO if there's no natural ordering it should be a collection rather than a series

I agree. IMHO there are many series in the database that I think are no series. I don't do much series things, but I think it is often misused as a collection of anything.
      • And yes, a series to me also implies an order
      • reosarevok[m]
It's not a series in the maths meaning of the word :D
      • https://musicbrainz.org/series/fd13215d-1b7c-47... is very much a series, they call it a series themselves too - it's unnumbered
      • https://www.naxos.com/EditionSeries/Detail/?tit... "Our highly-acclaimed AMERICAN CLASSICS series boasts a unique catalogue of both well-known and rarely recorded masterpieces. This landmark series..."
      • I agree something like "Studied in Uni X" is not really a series in any way and shouldn't be done like that for example, and there's a bunch of other not-really-a-series cases, but I disagree it's because of a lack of ordering
