Not a bad idea, but I think it would be better to incentivize artist credits and other relationships. Musicbrainz moreso suffers from a lack of depth than a lack of breadth, in my opinion
Tbf, I really wish we could preseed stuff in the relationship editor

that sort of incentivized thing is tricky, since it can make people want to game the system in order to get the prize. would be counter-productive if it caused people to add a lot of extremely low quality or even incorrect information just to get the metrics.

Might as well just keep it private or only for people with, say, 10k+ edits.
My only problem with this is that a lot of the time it is relatively annoying to add credits to recordings, albums and whatnot.
Unless you know them personally or they're for albums where all musicians are already on the database, you gotta add all of the musicians as artists, at least have the decency to add links for them and other metadata, then add "X, Y and Z recorded guitars, bass and drums for tracks 1, 2, 3, 6, 8, 15, 382 and 38586.33 at A, B and C, on January 3rd, 2025, June 8th 2019 and December 31st 1458 BC"
Erin
i get that a lot with anime soundtracks
sometimes they have the "characters" all sing a song, but half the voice actors won't be listed
muxxerexe[m]
Not to mention that for obscurer releases you gotta get the credits from Discogs or something like Metal-Archives and they're like:... (full message at <https://matrix.chatbrainz.org/_matrix/media/v3/...>)
Ah don't get me started with japanese music, it's a pain in the ass
Erin
at present, i have 6,606 edits, and almost all of them are anime related
muxxerexe[m]
Not only do you often have releases having a lot of complicated variations, like CD, CD+DVD, promo version with just 2 songs, regular version but without instrumentals, regular version but released with a different cover art, Spotify version but all the artist credits are switched
Erin
i have less than half as many tracks from japan as from the west in my collection, but i just encounter vastly more gaps in the mb db
my favorite is when the promo is the same as the regular, and you cant figure out why
muxxerexe[m]
So you spend the next two hours checking the romanization of the names, checking the characters, checking the voice actors, adding the relationships...
Erin
and after 30 minutes of google you find out that it was technically the same first disc, but also had a music video, which mb should technically list, but most of the /stores/ don't
muxxerexe[m]
And don't even get me started with VA releases
Found this chinese magazine CD from 2011 when I was adding nano.RIPE's discography
Had ALL the names for the tracks and bands translated to Mandarin
Had to translate each one back to Japanese and find all of it and there were like 20 different existing recordings
Erin
my other favorite, using plex, is when anime stuff matches to an english or romaji sort of thing, and everything's good, and then 6 months later, someone updates that the actual correct thing is japanese script, which i cant read, and it automatically changes my plex entry after the fact
...and then i have to notice in order to even know to come add a pseudo
my most recent changes are actually the first western band in a long time that i've not found on mb
muxxerexe[m]
I often use the official transliteration but sometimes it's just clearly wrong and I know it because I know Japanese lol
Erin
i'll do official if it's official cause .... official
but for pseudo i just do my best >.>
muxxerexe[m]
My main usage of MBz beyond logging music I listen to, is building up my local scene, which in itself is a pain in the butt
Erin
oh im always late to the party on that stuff
muxxerexe[m]
Adding events is particularly stressful
Erin
the band i just added about a week ago that's actually western for once ... appears to have stopped functioning as a band years and years ago
muxxerexe[m]
Usually when I need to look for venues that no longer exist
anomie_[m]
Yeah, there's definitely more that should be semi-automated imo
Like, I really wish I could pre-seed credits from Discogs
muxxerexe[m]
Should be possible with the necessary scripts
I'd write one if I even cared to sit down and learn how to write them
Shouldn't be too hard but I'm already working on software and web dev projects
anomie_[m]
Is pre-seeding relationships possible now?
* pre-seeding relationships with URL parameters possible now?

I honestly don't know,.

The fun stuff is those bands that stopped functioning, especially when you can piece together stuff from different online sources and consolidate it into relationships
muxxerexe[m]
I must have added about 200 bands from the early 2000s
All of which are obscure as shit
I guess it's fun to add them, albeit time-consuming
I've been adding tags to entries as to notify any other editors that they need work on
I've added a bit of bluegrass and southern gospel stuff, those artists loved to bounce between groups. Definitely time consuming though lol
muxxerexe[m]
Local scenes are horrendous
muxxerexe[m] uploaded an image: (51KiB) < https://matrix.chatbrainz.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/chatbrainz.org/TZNoVjNqrmZWRHWUvTQoRgDG/image.png >
And all of those played in like a dozen bands each
Adding works is another issue.
It's rewarding, but I usually am dismayed to find that certain songs, albeit known, don't have a work associated to them, so I have to create them, and I need to go to some place like SADAIC's website, fill a captcha, and then look through entries until I can find (or not) the work I'm looking for, then add the relationships and whatnot.
All of this just so that a solar storm will one day fry all servers on Earth and every single edit ever made will be lost
Oh damn, I didn't know you could do that. I'll use this instead of adding artists that I didn't add the whole discography for to a collection from now on
Adding obscure weeb VA albums really takes me on a ride sometimes 🙃
I remember I once discovered a new label with thousands of multi track releases, with a few producers credited under dozens of distinct names 😭
s/new/netlabel/, s/label//
Perhaps it's a good thing that I don't remember what it was, so that it won't haunt me anymore

please dont take this the wrong way, and im not trying to be a grass 😭 but I thought if we were wanting to make potentially 10's of thousands of edits to the database we needed clearance from the dev team? 🤔
duckfromdisc[m] has quit

for sure, and also from the community manager (who admittedly is also a developer) to get an answer to whether the community will agree with making the edits.
should note that many individual musicbrainz editors have made 10s of thousands of edits over the time they've been using the site :)
the problem is more having them applied all at once or via an automated process
also appreciate we do make a lot of edits, i'm around at 384k myself

I've been trying to submit fingerprints with Picard, but it doesn't seem to be working. Normally, I can check the release page immediately after and see them there.
looking at Grafana dashboard, at around 8PM UTC someone submitted 15,000 fingerprints 🙃

chaban is making a lot of edits, but they're all being entered manually (albeit with the help of a script) and it's a type of edit that can be automated without error.
it does seem like the sort of thing that it might make sense to do as an automated cleanup by musicbrainz devs themselves, tbh.
it is kind of annoying that editing the url and editing the url type show up as two separate edits :/
soundandvision[m
cool beans, just was worried that in about 7 days when all of the edits "pop" there might be a slow-down while they're applied
kepstinbrainz
huh, they have all been entered rather quicker than i might have thought
