Crism: I think that release needs to be changed to a LP, I don't see it on any streaming services, and no mention of the LP coming with a download code (but your search results may be better)

Has anyone ever actually checked whether the discogs importer breaking classical music and anything else that uses headers like https://www.discogs.com/release/14179480 is just bad coding that can be fixed or it's a mess on the Discogs code it uses?

reosarevok[m]
Because I'm getting tired of fixing bad imports by newbies :(

<reosarevok[m]> "Because I'm getting tired of..." <- I'm not involved in this project really but I can say as a dev of 15 years that if you have consistent "newbie" code issues what you really have is a process issue (PR reviews, etc)
2025-08-05 21715, 2025
reosarevok[m]
Not code issues :)

Newbie data adders using an old importer (which has some annoying issues) and ignoring the issues entirely and adding borked data
2025-08-05 21755, 2025
reosarevok[m]
The importer is not part of our code, it's an external userscript
2025-08-05 21728, 2025
reosarevok[m]
But I should probably see if I can improve it and stop dealing with the mess, just checking whether someone had already looked at it and figured out it's a lot harder than it seems :)

tofu[m]
Gotcha, it's always more complicated than I would expect :)
I suspect a large majority of those are viola recordings

Hi reosarevok: I didn’t even know this instrument existed. I would suggest to use the more common/less ambiguous name “vertical viola” instead and to mention its inventor Carleen Hutchins in disambiguation comment.
Honestly, we could just change it and see how people use it. We could even name it "vertical viola / alto violin" although I know you dislike slashy names

Oh right, I’m getting too confused now, thank you.

I mean. fuckit we can jsut name it verticla violin
2025-08-05 21738, 2025
yvanzo[m]
Just use the one from WP/WD, it is probably the most reliable, and it is less ambiguous.
2025-08-05 21753, 2025
reosarevok[m]
Yeah, agreed that in principle "use what wikipedia has" might be the least confusing :)

so "vertical (name for viola) just to make it *really* annoyingly difficult lol

ok. I'm convinced. create a ticket please (currently working on something else, so i don't forget)

we can also link that i na community post and say we're changing it (because you know how people react when we rename instruments)

yvanzo[m]
This instrument is linked to 500+ recordings. It might be worth tracking this change through an INST ticket for follow-up.

I don't if that's related but I could never undestood the instrument autocomplete algorithm, e.g. typing `clairne` still only shows `clarinet` only as the second option

dvirtz: that's not ideal, but I'm guessing it's due to the "synthtar" alias on keytar. since it weights all aliases equal to the entity name, and also prefers matches closer in length
