maybe we can just add notifications for now but no messages?
aerozol
lucifer: hah exactly what Adam is saying
alastairp
lucifer: yeah, atj_mb just saying that
chinmay
I had a tiny suggestion for LB navbar (idk how much sense it makes) - if we notice the order of links (Home, Feed, Recent, Data, Explore, About) we order it from specialized page to more general pages till Recent tab. The Data tab feels out of place in this order. It should come after Explore tab. Home > Feed > Recent > Explore > Data > About.
Freso
FWIW, I can’t recall having gotten any MB spam user e-mails. I also don’t think I’ve ever gotten a report of them.
reosarevok
Really, I'm missing how that's better, if we're going to keep emails
Or is the suggestion to also drop user-to-user emails?
lucifer
reosarevok: but adding email is optional in MB? like you can delete it from MB after verifying.
reosarevok
Just make it so users with less than X time in the project and less than X edits / listens cannot contact others
lucifer: you can't edit MB if you delete it
lucifer
ah i see.
reosarevok
I'm not sure why we even allow deleting it tbh
FWIW I get a reasonable amount of messages via MB, and they're mostly people asking for help / suggestions / trying to learn when I fix their album entries
I mean, anyone can contact you by leaving a note in an edit of yours anyway
And we obviously can't disable that
We can disable that sending *emails*, which was part of the reason we wanted notifications and messages :p
So that people wouldn't get emails about stuff
Freso
I don’t get why we are discussing spam for inter-user messaging when there’s no history of that happening to date and we have ways to report if it should happen… and those ways to report would be much improved by being on-site.
reosarevok
Yeah, it all seems absurd to me
Freso
🤷
alastairp
I'm kind of surprised that that's the case to be honest
everywhere else that I've seen a public input box on the internet it gets spam
reosarevok
I mean, why spam people user to user when you can just spam on some edit notes
And get to spam many users at once )
alastairp
maybe it's because you already have the strong restrictions on who can send a message in the first place
Freso
And there’s no reason to lessen those restrictions for on-site messaging.
reosarevok
We don't, apparently - I checked but it seems beginners can actually send messages
But I'd expect us to have them on messaging
Freso
Not even requiring an e-mail?
alastairp
interesting
bitmap
we require a confirmed email
reosarevok
Yeah, actually I expect we do require an email
But we require that for pretty much everything
alastairp
so are we sure that there's no spam being sent through this system?
or just it's not being reported?
reosarevok
No, we're just sure nobody has complained
Freso
^
reosarevok
Since we... er, have no oversight about it, as per the previous discussion of issues :D
alastairp
so if MB wants to add an outgoing messages table, that could be interesting to look at?
aerozol
Sorry reosarevok, hard to keep track of the irc and mayhem is already over this topic anyway I think :P
Freso
And we know that between reo and myself we’ve never received any.
aerozol
I think if we have social media links we should also allow people to add their email
reosarevok
Yes, I'm not expecting this to be taken into consideration anyway, just confused
Freso
We already have their e-mail.
reosarevok
It's clear a decision has been taken, so 🤷♂️
aerozol
Wait Freso: I thought you were saying there ere reports of 1-3 cases of user email abuse
Freso
aerozol: Yes. Not spam.
aerozol
Oh right yeah I think that’s what people mean, they just say spam automatically
Freso
I don’t think so? Didn’t feel that way to me.
reosarevok
Yeah, there was talk about gmail automatically stopping them and stuff
aerozol
Right right
reosarevok
That's spam-spam, not someone sending you a message about your mom :)
Freso doesn’t receive MB mails on gmail and currently has no spam filtering for his e-mail 🤷
aerozol
How did you see my emails
Freso
aerozol: Who are you asking?
reosarevok
Me, since they're full of stuff about moms, I guess
Freso
Oh.
aerozol
Hey, not just that!!!
That and spam
reosarevok
And sausages and egg, I hope
lucifer: in case it's of any use as a base, this is what we had planned for notifications in MB:
Check if any virtual people want/need to be in on topics and then have those in the main room?
reosarevok
(we'd want to use it to notify users if someone thanks them for an edit note, and I guess also when someone comments on a note :) )
mayhem, alastairp: Are we supposed to take any minutes of the breakouts?
Freso
We can also do breakout rooms in the Zoom call and you can have someone join the Zoom call locally and I can toss you into your own subroom in the call.
lucifer
reosarevok: makes sense, thanks.
aerozol
Freso: I’ll nudge the others re. how to do the stream/zoom once they’ve sorted whatever they’re talking about now/organised the sessions
Freso
aerozol: 👍
So we’re doing "UI" in the main room when we return?
monkey
lucifer: is there a couchdb service missing in the LB local dev workflow/docker-compose file, or am I missing something?
lucifer
monkey: uh yeah, just checked its missing. i'll add it but it won't have any data there. is there anything particualr you need from it?
monkey
Nah, just getting some connection errors preventing me from loading pages locally
alastairp
reosarevok: most breakouts are now main session topics
monkey
If I remove the config item I get an issue about missing config option :)
reosarevok
So basically everything in the main room is still main session and minuted?
Ok
lucifer
i see, i'll add the container locally.
alastairp
lucifer: re: LB services, I'd like to use docker-compose profiles or the COMPOSE_FILE env variable (like musicbrainz-docker) does so that we can disable certain services during local development
I often prefer to have spotify reader shut down to minimise debugging, for example
lucifer
sounds good, alastairp. i just use `./develop.sh up SERVICE NAME` for that currently.
monkey: can you help me document the plus and minuses in the minutes too? :)
I think that might be useful to keep for later
Freso
The plut and minutes in the minuses
alastairp
I woudn't mind moving project name and compose file to `.env` (or moving docker-compose.yaml in to .) so that `docker-compose` works too, and then develop.sh becomes an extension rather than the required tool into running the stuff. we can talk about this later, not important for today
lucifer
makes sense
reosarevok
Freso: liked the Majora's Mask reference in the forum btw
(that's what it was, right?)
Freso
:)
It was, yeah.
reosarevok
FWIW, having "this is what I listened to the most" is nice in Spotify... especially *later on*
(so you can listen to the "my most listened bits" from like 3 years ago for nostalgia :p )
mayhem
reosarevok: yes, of the MB one please.
aerozol
lucifer: Do you still have a question or did you give up?
lucifer
aerozol: wanted to point out same thing as rob that we already have playlists for things you didn't listen to but others did.
rdswift_
This might sound like a weird use case, but I would like to be able to follow people (to see what they're listening to), but not necessarily use their listens to provide recommendations.
reosarevok
"I want to laugh at what shit this people listens to"? :p
rdswift_
Yes. ;-)
aerozol
rdswift_: does recommendations use people you follow? I thought not, but that would be kinda weird, I wanna follow friends with bad taste still haha
rdswift_
I honestly don't know. I've not used the recommendations much.
lucifer
mayhem: a bit unrelated, but we could in general add combined playlists. let the user choose with which other users's listening history they want to get a playlist with.
aerozol
Ooh BFF playlist
(Best Friends Forever)
lucifer
hah indeed!
Freso
Someone mentioned "depressed Monday"(?) yesterday, I think it was.
rdswift_
Is there a way to have the majority of the data already calculated, and the just update it with the December data? That might shorten the processing time to allow faster response after year-end.
lucifer
rdswift_: it'll take a few hours to run anyway so we can just do entire re-run from scratch.
reosarevok: not very good. the UI breaks down on smaller screens.
reosarevok
I mean, if we actually believe the thing about people dropping streaming to own music again, then tagging could make sense
I'm just not sure I believe this being a significant movement :)
If tagging is not really a thing, why are people angry that the app is not doing it well? :D
alastairp
why are people tagging on mobile?
rdswift_
I'm not much of an app user, but the only thing I would likely use it for would be to scan a barcode (in a second-hand music store) to see if I already have the album in my collection.
alastairp
(maybe they are? maybe they don't have a computer?)
atj_mb
rdswift_: the discogs app is quite good for that
Freso
rdswift_: Yeah. That’s pretty much all I’ve used it for in the past. :x
alastairp
atj_mb: none of that recommendation of competitors :)
rdswift_
I've never looke dinto that. Thanks for the suggestion.
Freso
atj_mb: That requires you to use Discogs for that purpose. :)
alastairp
reosarevok: but that's a great question
reosarevok
alastairp: I expect because they a) don't have computers, which I expect it's not super uncommon in many countries or b) they buy their music on their phones and listen on their phones so why would they move it to their computer to tag
alastairp
got to remember that all people don't interact with music like we do
reosarevok
But I dunno, tbh
rdswift_
unfortunately (?), I don't have a Discogs account.
elgranRoble joined the channel
alastairp
or computers
Freso
I think I’d like an app to browse MeB notifications (and messages).
